froh··on Why skilled workers come to Germany and then leave again
2y? sounds like some fitness sth scam. not the real thing. no clubs, where people share their hobby.
froh··on Why skilled workers come to Germany and then leave again
interesting.

I wonder how many move back to Germany when fragile though. requires citizenship though? unless your permanent residency stays valid when you move abroad.

what would I have to use as search terms on Google scholar to find the many studies?

froh··on Why skilled workers come to Germany and then leave again
errr, no? when you work here for long enough you accrue pension benefits which are paid out wherever you live.

if you retire abroad you spend the pension abroad. that's a net loss for the nation.

froh··on Why skilled workers come to Germany and then leave again
clubs! yes! Vereine! they still are the heart and soul of Germany.
froh··on Why skilled workers come to Germany and then leave again
guys, join a Verein. some Verein. any Verein. that's where Germans make friends when we're new in town.

there is no certificate higher than C2, so "minimum" C2 is ridicerlus, ackchyually...

I assume.thats your point here, but to bystanders: C2 is nearly native speaker language proficiency, nuanced, precise, eloquent.

if language production is the job, or impeccable understanding is a must have, like as a psychotherapist, then C2 is a reasonable requirement.

in contrast you can study in german language at a German university with C1 proficiency already.

froh··on Sick leave: Germany rising but not the worst in Europe
yes. and driven by long term sicknesses like, for example, burnout, cancer, and work-related older age issues.

dropping phone-in sick calls will sure as hell end those /s

this whole package is driven by populist disinformation.

every $$ spent on this "abuse" is a $$ not spent on tax evasion while giving an impression of "finally someone is doing something" and the $$ that could be made in plugging corporate tax evasion by gar outrun the $$ saved on the no income side.

in Germany we talk 350Mio€ vs 10Bio€ y/y

the us numbers will have a similar ratio

> against whoever is labeled as intolerant

No. that's exactly not what is said.

it only is applicable to organisations and people who very clearly express not only some disagreement, but their intolerance and their plan and intent to enforce suppression of dissent once in power. and then suppression of whatever they are intolerant of.

and the far right very clearly announces that they will "eradicate" and "put to their (lower) place" whatever. immigrants. homosexuals. transgender humans. wom(b)en.

if you tolerate _that_, even pay for it, in times of ai boosted slander, you get queers in prisons, pregnant teenagers, and a few much richer very rich people.

except Wayland dropped the baby with the bathtub?

for example standardized window management, left as an exercise to the GUI lib and the compositor? and woop woop X11 GUI apps need to be rewritten to support window management on WSL (Wayland based) and the network reconnect on hybernate also broke.

But at least Games are faster, aren't they...

froh··on GLM-5.2 – How to Run Locally
> GPUs are extremely underutilized if you launch just 1 generation stream

why is that? b/c the thing is waiting for the hoooman and idling? or some parallelizable interleaving steps?

I have no intuition yet how this works under the hood.

what if a language would allow to elegantly pack Optional values?

so the physical layout has a bit vector with one bit for each optional. and a popcnt over that bitvector (masked up to the value we're interested in) will give the actual slot to look into?

would also make sense to reorder / bucket fields by (byte) size

if you want to do that in any low level language (rust, c++) you have to deviate from their standard syntax for optionals, and you have to manually keep track of slot order. but for domains with many optional/default values, this amy really reduce cache pressure, no?

In higher level languages you can fake the effect (with flyweight facades), so from python such a packed "dataclass"-like class can look neat and clean. however at the low level there is no abstraction that allows to create your own data layout.

at least I didn't find anything yet.

froh··on Norway imposes near ban on AI in elementary school
that's dismissing that brains need time to evolve. what if brains need to be mature enough in and by themselves before they benefit from digital support? as in "no telly before 3-4, no smartphone before 14, prioritize pen and paper proficiency until 12-14" makes sense biological brain maturity?

then "give'm a computer ASAP" is the wrong answer.

froh··on Norway imposes near ban on AI in elementary school
in the intermediate oecd [piaacs report] pages 64ff (PDF page 66ff) there are bar charts indicating the percentiles of each level for each participating nation.

the report also visualizes not only inter country but also intra country outcomes correlating socio economic influences (age, parents, family migration history, ...) and level of education (school, high school, college and higher) with test outcome (literacy, numerics problem solving)

it also has 10y ago/now comparison.

a trove for the Q "how are we doing, capability wise?"

thanks for pointing to the study!!

froh··on Dopamine Fracking
"commodification" (and "industrialization" and "over-consumption") were just alternative terms they tried before settling on "dopamine fracking". that's it. and exactly because theses terms are not synonyms at all and exactly because they fit worse, the author settles on fracking: squeezing a ressource out of our brains no matter the collateral damage, as you then identified.
froh··on Using XDG-Compliant Config Files (2024)
is this aspect also cross platform? like supporting Windows %APPDATA% and %LOCALAPPDATA% ?

likewise for ~/.cache ($XDG_CACHE_HOME). does wxWindows provide a cross platform abstraction for the cache dir, too?

froh··on Dopamine Fracking
i got much more out of it and it's intelligently written

I see this structure:

* introduce dopamine fracking

* the wonderful strawberry analogy to what we loose, personally, by giving in to the substitue for the real thing

* how they (the author) managed to in baby steps turn down attempts at fracking _their_ dopamine: through awareness of what's happening and what were missing because of it

so until there is some bigger scale solution, we can at least self regulate.

and overall the article is a positive note in difficult times.

I especially loved the strawberry analogy.

froh··on When AI Builds Itself: Our progress toward recursive self-improvement
what do you mean?

if feasible this proposal is imho exactly what we need: a pause to collectively think how we get all the benefits without the potential harms.

to the non-techies around me I compare the boost of LLMs with the journey from slide rule via punch card driven computers through mainframes and PC to the smart phones of our days --- just within less than a decade, and we're at the transition from mainframe to PC with models that can produce reasonable output on a normal laptop.

how about we check we're getting where we want to get to, before getting to some dystopic place where everyone wonders how we got _there_?

I see nothing "full of themselves" in that.

froh··on When AI Builds Itself: Our progress toward recursive self-improvement
I didn't see this discussed more on hn yet:

We believe it would be good for the world to have the option to slow or temporarily pause frontier AI development to enable societal structures and alignment research to keep up with the advance of the technology. The Anthropic Institute will conduct research—in collaboration with many others—and take actions to help build the systems that a credible slowdown or pause would require. These systems would enable frontier AI developers to verify that others globally have actually stopped or slowed, and that a bad actor could not use the auspices of a coordinated slowdown to jump ahead in secret. If such systems existed, we expect that we would slow down or temporarily pause, if other developers at or near the frontier also did so in a verifiable manner.

it gives a great glimpse at the time and life of the artist.

froh··on Changing how we develop Ladybird
exactly. a _proposed_ code fix is a good indicator where the problem is (analysis) but more often than not the actual maintainable and sustainable solution will look different.

a code owner may choose a very different way of fixing things, even for what looks like a trivial fix.

froh··on Azure Linux 4.0 is Microsoft's first general-purpose Linux
without certification of other clouds and any hardware this is not general purpose.

their plan might however be a Micro-Windows, which only boots the hyper-v, which then runs that Linux. that move would leverage the Microsoft Windows hardware certification.
