fro0116··on Clicker Heroes 2 is abandoning free-to-play
I am a fan of the _idea_ of only charging for cosmetics customizations instead of hiding actual game content behind paywalls, but the way that Valve and others have implemented it in practice is highly predatory, because nearly everything desirable is hidden behind an opaque wall of RNG instead of just put up for direct purchase for a known price.

This is how you end up with gambling addicts blowing thousands of dollars for a virtual in-game skin, and it has enabled a vast network of grey-markets gambling operations to fuel those addictions [1].

It can be difficult for normal people (who mostly just enjoy the gameplay and maybe once in a while splurge on a few dozen bucks to make our virtual avatars look nicer) to emphasize with people who have real gambling problems, but that doesn't make it any more ethical to exploit them so blatantly.

Hiding these gambling platforms behind the veneer of innocent-looking games also exposes gambling to a younger audience that's much more susceptible to predatory tactics often used by gambling platforms to build up their addiction. There are pretty good reasons why gampling is a regulated industry, and online games that employ these kinds of systems are way overdue for some oversight.

fro0116··on Ask HN: What are the best tools for code reviews?
In a similar vein, I'd love to try a code review tool that's smart enough to recognize that I've moved a function from location A to location B, and can show me diffs for that function against its last known state in its previous location, and ideally would keep track of changes at the function level, rather than (or in addition to?) the file level.

Not sure how feasible that is to implement transparently though. Seems to me at minimum it'd have to require developers to add some kind of annotation to the function to include a globally unique identifier (though I'd honestly be willing to put up with that in exchange for the benefits).

fro0116··on Numpy: Plan for dropping Python 2.7 support
Just adding my random piece of anecdata:

docker-compose uses Python2 and has encoding issues on Windows that have no real workarounds other than upgrading to Python3: https://github.com/docker/compose/issues/2775

fro0116··on Code together in real time with Teletype for Atom
Atom for me consistently sits at 0-0.1% (mostly 0) CPU usage when idling. You may want to investigate some of the extensions you're using if the numbers are different for you.
fro0116··on App Center: Build, Test, Distribute and Monitor Apps in the Cloud
Notably, support for https://github.com/Microsoft/react-native-windows, the React Native plugin for building UWP apps, is missing, which is a bit of a curious omission for a Microsoft product.

Anyone here have experience working with react-native-windows? How's the experience compared to React Native for Android/iOS?

Beautiful!
fro0116··on Code together in real time with Teletype for Atom
It's almost certainly _possible_. See under "Editor-agnostic client library", and https://github.com/atom/teletype-client
fro0116··on Code together in real time with Teletype for Atom
Curious if this supports multiple-cursors (as in multiple cursors per user through ctrl/cmd+d, etc)? If so that'd be awesome!
fro0116··on Visual Studio Live Share
Surely they're not incurring much costs with this feature if they're just using Microsoft servers for the initial WebRTC handshake? That's what Atom's recently announced Teletype feature does at least: https://blog.atom.io/2017/11/15/code-together-in-real-time-w...
fro0116··on How should you build a high-performance column store for the 2020s?
Datomic honestly sounds amazing based on everything I've read and heard about it. I wish it wasn't completely proprietary though. Even an open-core model would make it a much more viable option.
fro0116··on Why I left Mac for Windows: Apple has given up
Mind sharing how to actually do this with Android?
fro0116··on Flexbox and Grids: your layout’s best friends
Is anyone aware of any attempts/plans to bring CSS-grid style layout to React Native? Either officially or through some library/plugin.

I'd love to try out Grid on the Web side of my app, but it's hard to justify if it'd mean I have to maintain a separate Flexbox-based layout for the React Native side anyways.

fro0116··on Netflix Employees Are Happier with Their Job Than Facebook or Google Employees
Thanks, that was really helpful!

Do you have any kind of remote working allowance? Or are you expected to be in office all the time?

fro0116··on Netflix Employees Are Happier with Their Job Than Facebook or Google Employees
By "top tier", do you also mean people who are willing to put in longer than normal hours and deal with a super-competitive culture and the office politics and drama that come with it?

Or am I reading too much into the quotations? I'm honestly just interested in hearing more about what the culture at Netflix is like.

fro0116··on Cryptocurrency Evolution
I don't have anything against bitcoin and cryptocurrencies in general, but I wish the cryptocurrency community would stop trying to co-opt the term "crypto".

It's a well-established (understatement of the century) shorthand for the term "cryptography", that no honest cryptocurrency enthusiast can claim in good faith to be ignorant of, because cryptography provides the technological foundations on which all cryptocurrencies are built.

Conflating these terms can cause undue confusion that breeds disdain for the very technology you're trying to promote. I, for one, was expecting to read an article on the history of cryptography as it evolved over the years when I clicked the link.

Despite all this, I just wanted to say the article itself was an interesting read, but you're doing yourself and the cryptocurrency community a disservice by unwittingly pulling a bait and switch like this on so many potential readers.

At the very least, please avoid using it as a shorthand in contexts intended for communication to those outside your community.

fro0116··on Uber Visa Card
All of that in combination with no foreign transaction fees, which makes this a really great travel card. I'll probably pick one up once it's available.
fro0116··on Key Reinstallation Attacks – Breaking WPA2 by Forcing Nonce Reuse
Another option is OmniROM: http://www.omnirom.org/

Also fairly actively developed and supports a wide range of devices.

fro0116··on Severe flaw in WPA2 protocol leaves Wi-Fi traffic open to eavesdropping
Is there anything at all we can do to protect ourselves until our router gets patched?

From the earlier thread [1] I gleamed that maybe a MAC filter could help, but it sounds like that's not going to help much because MAC addresses can be easily spoofed.

The article here recommends sticking to sites with HTTPS, which isn't really something we always have control over, and isn't something we can realistically expect our non-technical WiFi users to be able to strictly adhere to.

VPNs were also suggested, but again, mandating that everybody on our WiFi must connect through a VPN is rather impractical, and I'm personally not sure which VPN providers are supposed to be trustworthy to begin with.

If people here have other suggestions, I'd love to hear them.

fro0116··on [dead]
I also don't ever plan on driving, and the biggest contributor to that is probably because I simply can't bring myself to entrust my own life or the lives of others to my own poor motor skills and spotty attention span, when any tiny mistake at any moment while driving has the potential to destroy lives.
fro0116··on IGN acquires Humble Bundle
The UX for Discord around group chat is also miles ahead of Steam's. Unlimited history, granular notification options with @mentions, rich media embedding, third party integrations, and seamless voice chat support (and now with video chat and screensharing to boot). Meanwhile Steam's chat client has been stagnating in terms of both features and UX for what feels like a decade.
fro0116··on CircleCI trusts 8 analytics companies with your source code and API tokens
I wouldn't go as far as OP, and I'm not saying the post doesn't add anything useful to the discussion, but in this particular instance it does feel distasteful and opportunistic. I'm sure this discussion around what other CI providers do would have happened with or without this comment. I'd like to have seen some restraint exercised in this case.
fro0116··on GitLab raises $20M Series C round led by GV
It feels to me like GitLab might be shooting themselves in the foot by spreading their resources too thin, too quickly.

They have the very grand ambition to take over the entire devops toolchain from source control to deployment, and some parts of the toolchain can certainly benefit from the tight vertical integration that GitLab provides, and when everything just works the product does end up providing a very streamlined user experience.

However, this also means that their monolithic toolchain has to be able to out-compete best-of-class specialized tools in every part of the chain, and every part of the chain where they fail to do so could end up as a potential dealbreaker for a large subset of their user base.

I've used GitLab.com for a few projects, and in general I've found the various aspects of their product sorely lacking in terms of overall polish, performance, and capability compared to excellent specialized products like GitHub for VCS, CircleCI for CI/CD, and Pivotal Tracker for project tracking/planning, etc.

Also, the fact that they're trying to take over the entire toolchain means that just about everybody else in the devops space sees them as a direct competitor, so until they grow to become an 80-pound gorrila that nobody can ignore in at least 1 part of the toolchain, very few other companies building devops tooling will willingly integrate with their product, which makes them even less attractive for users with specific/more advanced needs that their product alone can't meet.

With all that said, I really appreciate their dedication to open-source and am personally rooting for their success, but I can't help but shake the feeling that they're fighting a losing battle. DevOps tooling is simply too diverse, complex, and opinionated a field for any 1 company to dominate from end-to-end. Focusing resources to become the best tool for the job in 1 area and using that leverage to foster an open-ecosystem around that product seems like a much more viable long term strategy (though that could certainly prove to be difficult if you're trying to become the best tool for VCS, due to how entrenched GitHub is in terms of developer mindshare).

If the shape of your code begins to look like something out of the gilded-rose kata [1], it's usually a sign that it could use a good refactoring.
