frenchman_in_ny··on Why American ambulance rides are so expensive
I've been there before. I had a high deductible health plan, it was December & I hadn't used any of my premiums... I had a heart attack (I didn't know it at the time). And my mind went to "but my premium! I know, I'll walk myself to urgent care instead of taking an ambulance to the hospital"
frenchman_in_ny··on Slate EV truck starts at $24,950
On your point of self-driving, I was just looking into if this would be compatible with a comma.ai autopilot, and it looks like Slate doesn't even have the default hardware onboard to allow it (and there's no option to add it?). Unfortunate miss.
frenchman_in_ny··on Ask HN: Would you use a job board where every listing is verified?
Cornell ILR is trying to build out a job board [0] like this -- but I feel like it's failing because it's simply an aggregator of other job boards, with limited value add.

frenchman_in_ny··on Bet on German Train Delays
I get it that this is satire, and that they're giving DB a hard time about their constant delays -- but on the other hand there's EU Regulation 261/2004 for compensation for delayed flights. I just found out about EU Regulation 2021/782 on delayed trains, but basically it's not "a thing"?

frenchman_in_ny··on Amazon delivery drone strikes North Texas apartment, causing minor damage
I agree with you that FAR covers all airspace. There's an interesting case on airspace (over an Indian reservation) & an emergency landing that's winding its way through the courts right now [0]

frenchman_in_ny··on The bachelor tax – what it costs in taxes to be single
Sadly accurate - and what is worse is that child support laws by state [0] are actually even more dated in their mechanisms, where despite using an "income shares" model, most don't take custody & parenting time into account.

So despite "savings" from a MFJ filing status, when you go back to Single filer or HOH filer, you're penalized on the child support side.

frenchman_in_ny··on Canada slashes 100% tariffs on Chinese EVs to 6%
Interesting - will this open a back door to having Chinese EVs on US roads? I would assume some sort of kei truck loopholes would have to be found to solve state-level registration or insurance requirements.
frenchman_in_ny··on Ask HN: Any example of successful vibe-coded product?
Curious about what you're using as a cycling platform -- just the Peloton, or are you on a bike trainer? There's a huge library of workouts out there (see [0] as just an example), but mostly targeted at % FTP. The flow path is generally create your workout in an app to generate the FIT file, then upload to the bike computer (or use Zwift). But they tend to not support cadence range as yours does. Would love to find something that gives me %FTP and cadence range!

frenchman_in_ny··on My dad could still be alive, but he's not
I'm coming at this as someone who had an MI at a relatively young age:

For the goals -- and this may differ between EMT / paramedic & protocols -- but I would really wish that there was a blood draw done in the field. Before they bring you to the cath lab with a suspected MI, the ER is likely going to draw blood to get troponin levels at a 2-hour interval. You could save some time & heart muscle by getting a blood sample (containing initial levels) in the field.

frenchman_in_ny··on American solar farms
There's a very specific reason (or quirk) as to why Texas leads the nation in renewable energy -- ERCOT. Basically, 90% of Texas' electric load is serviced by in-state assets, and they have very few interconnections to the rest of the grid. The electricity dispatch curve is priced on the margin, on the cost to operate the last-fired generator (natural gas), and ERCOT has moved to grow solar as a way to reduce prices.[0]

ERCOT has also had a number of spectacular -- and costly -- failures.

frenchman_in_ny··on Canadian Ultrarunner Arrested in India for Carrying Garmin InReach (2024)
"Lewis had unknowingly violated an Indian law that requires individuals to obtain a license before owning or using a personal satellite communication device."

I'm curious -- would iPhone 14 and up be illegal under Indian law as well, given they have the ability to sent SMS to satellites?

frenchman_in_ny··on Recruiters Use A.I. To Scan Résumés. Applicants Are Trying to Trick It
I found it especially ingenious when they mentioned: "another candidate wrote more than 120 lines of code to influence A.I. and hid it inside the file data for a headshot photo." Next level steganography.

It chafes me that recruiters feel like it's OK to deploy AI to screen candidates, but feel that it's not OK for candidates to try to game the AI. (Full disclosure: have been job hunting for ~2 years, so somewhat jaded on the AI / ATS world).

frenchman_in_ny··on Demand for human radiologists is at an all-time high
There's still a human in the loop with Garmin Autoland -- someone has to press the button. If you're flying solo and become incapacitated, the plane isn't going to land itself.
frenchman_in_ny··on Demand for human radiologists is at an all-time high
No - planes cannot "land themselves with zero human intervention" (...). A CAT III autoland on commercial airliners requires a ton of manual setting of systems and certificated aircraft and runways in order to "land themselves" [0][1].

I'm not fully up to speed on the Autonomi / Garmin Autoland implementation found today on Cirrus and other aircraft -- but it's not for "everyday" use for landings.

frenchman_in_ny··on Ask HN: Has anyone else been unemployed for over two years?
Yes, I'm exactly that situation. Mid-40s. My background is in finance - investment banking. I spent 16 years at the same firm, before being actively recruited over to an industry-leading bank but in an adjacent sector (UHNW lending). Less than a year into that, I was laid off as part of a large reduction in force. "Sorry, last in first out, here's two weeks". Thankfully the RIF was large enough that it triggered a WARN Notice, so I got an additional 3 months out of it.

I've gone through my network multiple times, asked for referrals, have applied to 2,000+ job openings that I've seen on LinkedIn, have tried networking meetings, you name it. I'm in NYC and not geographically mobile (raising 2 kids, divorced), but I've applied to jobs in FL, Chicago, etc where I would try to make it work being in an office part time around my schedule. I've applied to totally different sectors.

The recruiting merry-go-around is brutal. ATS to enter resume data, automatic rejection emails (sometimes within under 24h!). The "what have you done the last two years" question kills me -- I've looked for a job, that's what I've done.

frenchman_in_ny··on Ask HN: Who wants to be hired? (July 2025)
Sigh. I know I'm not the "right" industry for HN, but I find the news & discussion here interesting and that's why I'm here. I really trying to keep my head up when I see these "who's hiring" posts & stay optimistic about the job market. The reality is I've been searching for 2+ years and the market is challenging for what I've done for ~20 years (credit underwriting / LBO / M&A).

Hi - I'm Stephane. I spent ~20 years originating, structuring, and syndicating loans to a variety of mostly PE-backed companies of all sizes & in all industries. A lot of that work is focused on understanding corporate structure, cash flows, and valuations. Most recently, I had pivoted to underwriting bespoke loans to founders / C-suites of privately held companies. Open to (fractional?) COO / CFO and FP&A type roles.
frenchman_in_ny··on Show HN: I'm an airline pilot – I built interactive graphs/globes of my flights
Very cool. One nit is because of the graph smoothing, it looks like you have negative hours P2 time 2014-2015 and Heavy time 2021-2022.

I thought the ICAO "Heavy" designation applied to aircraft above a certain MTOW instead of time? Wouldn't the time designation be as acting as relief captain/FO?

In any case, great visualizations.

frenchman_in_ny··on Show HN: Patio – Rent tools, learn DIY, reduce waste
We have a large ~20K person BuyNothing community in my area (also NYC), and a few of us have thrown the same idea of a tool library around. We always hit a wall on the discussion of liability & liability insurance. Any ideas on how other organizations solve this?
frenchman_in_ny··on Tesla Solar Sales Declined for 4 Qtrs. Then Tesla Stopped Publishing the Numbers
Re "UK electricity prices are set by the highest priced generator which is normally gas"

Worldwide, electricity prices are set by the highest priced generator at the given moment of needed generation -- it's the dispatch curve. And generally, the generators that are the fastest to spin up to meet that incremental load are natural gas fired generators.

As to the GP's point, my intuition (happy to be proven wrong) is more that natural gas, and therefore electricity, is cheaper in the US, simply because it's more abundant in the US.

frenchman_in_ny··on Sailing from Berkeley to Hawaii in a 19ft Sailboat
I think a big reason why cruising sailors would remove the labels is that there's a belief that cockroaches & other bugs would lay eggs in the paper / glue [0], and having an infestation on a sailboat is then challenging to deal with while at sea.

frenchman_in_ny··on U.S. national-security leaders included me in a group chat

frenchman_in_ny··on Unemployed office workers are having a harder time finding new jobs
I've been unemployed from the finance world for ~18 months now. I've applied to over 1000 jobs (per my LinkedIn), though lots of those jobs just seem to be evergreen reposts on LinkedIn & not actual jobs. It's absolutely demoralizing.

frenchman_in_ny··on Spirit Airlines is filing for bankruptcy
It's likely a Chapter 11 reorganization, not a Chapter 7 liquidation [0]. So basically the equity holders get zeroed out and debt holders get some level of recovery in the form of new debt or combination of debt & equity.

Hopefully there will be some sort of study released relating to the restart of the grid. From memory of the 2003 East Coast Blackout the restart mechanics are fairly complex.
