frenchman_in_ny··on Two in three shoppers won't buy products in locked display cases
Just FYI - at least through the HD website, they will tell you aisle Y bay X (though it may not say "bottom right"). So the assistant at HD isn't adding a ton of value.
frenchman_in_ny··on Retired detective: We got it wrong in Robert Roberson's death penalty case
Though, unlike in the US, the investigators in France are required to seek evidence of both innocence and guilt [0]. So theoretically there's no need for defense experts.

frenchman_in_ny··on Discussion: Job seekers can't find a job and Employers can't find an employees
Unemployed for over a year here. Somewhat of a different job sector vs most here (leveraged finance structuring / investment banking). Have gone both through networking & have applied to over 1,000 LinkedIn jobs, have looked at adjacent industries, etc. Most employers don't even bother to reply to job applications these days... I'm not even sure how to fix it - on either end - but it's depressing as hell.
frenchman_in_ny··on Ask HN: Who's getting their job applications rejected?
I was laid off in May 2023 from one of the bulge-bracket banks. Had been doing founder-focused lending on shares of private companies. I'll tell you that I've applied to probably 1,000 jobs since then (across the spectrum of opportunities), and these days rarely get even an acknowledgement of the application or even a rejection. It's basically full-on corporate ghosting.
frenchman_in_ny··on Fans quitting Spotify to save their love of music (2022)
I just revived my MP3 collection after getting frustrated with this & Spotify and purchasing a Pi5. But the process of self-hosting, correcting ID3 tags, etc is so time consuming (& frankly somewhat beyond my ability level) and is almost pushing me back to Spotify.
frenchman_in_ny··on 10% of retirees have $1M+ in savings
I'm building 529 balances for two kids, and I have future "school" dates for both, along with expenses for both starting at those future dates. I guess I'm not understanding how it's working in the plan & cashflow, since I'm seeing the cash outflow for the expenses, but I'm not seeing the cash inflow from the 529s (since they're the owners of them)?
frenchman_in_ny··on 10% of retirees have $1M+ in savings
Thanks for this link. Super valuable! I'm not clear on how it's considering 529s (for you, or for kid[s]?). I wish the "about you" allowed you to add kids and their projected college years into the financial plan.
frenchman_in_ny··on Leave car keys 'at front door' to avoid violent confrontations: Toronto Police
I think that under the doctrine of hot pursuit, once a suspected crime has been committed, as long as the police are able to visually identify the suspect they're allowed to cross jurisdictions.
frenchman_in_ny··on Paris Vote Targets SUV Drivers with Parking Fees Set to Triple
I haave had a Babboe City (without an e-assist) [0] in the NYC for ~8 years -- and mostly leave it in storage in the NYC suburbs. It's a heavy beast without the an e-assist, and the few times I've had it in NYC & parked it (during daylight hours), people have left trash in it. I can't fathom leaving a ~$6,000 bike locked outdoors overnight, given what happens to cheaper bikes in NYC [1]. I'd love to use it more, but it's impractical.

frenchman_in_ny··on Ask HN: How are you dealing with the job market anxiety?
I'm in a different industry sector (banking) vs probably most here. Spent ~20 years in investment banking doing acquisition financing. Left in late 2022 to do private loans to owners of pre-IPO companies (read: founders of tech companies). Was laid off as part of a corporate downsizing in May of this year.

I'll tell you it's extraordinarily challenging out there. I've probably sent upwards of 400 resumes for what looked like promising jobs on LinkedIn. I've gone through my entire network probably two times over, looking for leads to new jobs. I've gone to networking events as often as I can. I've even offered, during interviews, to take a step back career-wise just to get a job. And I'm still empty handed.

So, that adage of "6 months to get a new job?"... I'd suggest that if you're at risk for a layoff or in an industry with a lot of upheaval, I'd consider a buffer of 9-12 months.

frenchman_in_ny··on Ask HN: Is it appropriate to ask a startup to let me see their cap table?

frenchman_in_ny··on Twitter May Be Cash Flow Break-Even Soon – “The D Is Quite Big”
I wasn't reading "the D is quite big" as Musk actually talking about "Depreciation". I was reading it as another kind of "D".
frenchman_in_ny··on Twitter May Be Cash Flow Break-Even Soon – “The D Is Quite Big”
With all the attention Twitter receives, it’s “startling” how little money it makes, he said. Musk said Twitter is profitable based on Ebitda, or earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization, but emphasizes the “D” is quite big and they need to focus on the “E” part.

frenchman_in_ny··on Nord Stream blast 'blew away 50 metres of pipe'
I want to believe this explanation (under Occam's Razor), but from the article: "Danish police believe 'powerful explosions' blew *four holes* in the pipe and its newer twin, Nord Stream 2.

Wouldn't a rocketing hydrate plug likely blow a single hold in the pipe?

frenchman_in_ny··on KittyHawk air taxi startup is winding down
There are 3 heliports in NYC (West 30th Street Heliport, Downtown Heliport / Wall Street Heliport, TSS / 34th Street Heliport), but there are _no_ rooftop heliports since the 1977 accident.
frenchman_in_ny··on Divorce does funny things
Going through this myself as well. Sadly - divorce shouldn't be such a devastating process as it is (in the US).

Child support statues are incredibly flawed in certain states -- NYS in particular -- and lead to the process being more drawn out than it needs to be. NYS doesn't take child custody splits into account when it comes to setting child support, and as a result the "high earner" pays a pro-rata share based on relative income to the "low earner", irrespective of any custody arrangement.

[Edit to add] Exacerbating this is that it's generally cheaper to reach a settlement, instead of trying to advocate to actually fix the laws / statutes.

frenchman_in_ny··on Why do printers still suck?
My Epson printer just died an untimely death, after ~10 years of decent service.

I am exactly in the same use-case as you (color / multifunction / ADF / network & Chromebook) and spent hours trying to get some of the Canon printers working with a Chromebook. But I'm not finding that printer anywhere at a reasonable price!

frenchman_in_ny··on A divorce in Italy destroyed my researcher career
I can relate to this. I have spent the better part of two years in court proceedings.

In terms of child support, New York State is one of the few states that doesn't take into account parenting time when setting child support. Custody is solely determined by who earns $1 less than the other parent.

And NY courts have thrown up their hands saying "the legislature chose not to include it, it's not our problem". Sigh... The moment you (re-)discover that legal =! right.

frenchman_in_ny··on Drivers Refuse to Put Down Their Phones. People Keep Dying
I feel like a lot of drivers I've encountered (in NYC) are relatively aggressive towards pedestrians & cyclists.

Cyclists shouldn't be on the sidewalk (unless they're kids <8 years old I believe).

As to bicyclists being ticketed... unfortunately, yes. I've been ticketed and a number of friends have been ticketed. There have been a number of anti-cycling initiatives recently (follow @bikesnobnyc to see the level of it, with some snark)

frenchman_in_ny··on Drivers Refuse to Put Down Their Phones. People Keep Dying
I understand the frustration at a cyclist doing this, but are you more bothered by a cyclist doing this or a driver doing this?

You say "it's difficult to fathom this level of negligence", but a driver doing this is significantly more dangerous -- yet current laws don't take this into account.

For example: a ticket for a cyclist running a red light in NYC is greater than a ticket for a driver texting on their phone.

Brown Brothers Harriman still is (or used to be that way -- my info is dated) in the US, too.

Random story - I worked with one of the Hoares many moons ago, in the banking industry. Funny to read this on HN.
