freediverx··on Microsoft Freezes Salaries for 2023
It’s only better this way from the corporation’s POV. Without labor unions, any salary negotiations are heavily weighted in favor of the corporation.
freediverx··on Who Would Choose Socialism?
Reason: the propaganda rag for libertarians.
freediverx··on Microsoft Edge is leaking the sites you visit to Bing
This is what Cory Doctorow has described as the enshittification of companies and platforms. It's not a fluke - it was the plan all along. First you treat your customers well to build up a user base. Then you make things crappy for the users in order to bring in business partners (advertisers), which is what they're doing now. And later they will screw their business partners as well and redistribute all profits for their shareholders. And then the platform will die.
freediverx··on Microsoft Edge is leaking the sites you visit to Bing
But that's expected from a website that derives all of its revenue from advertising. That is NOT expected from one's operating system.

That is unacceptable. When your operating system can't be trusted, it's time to move to a different platform.

freediverx··on Meta plans to cut 10% of UK workforce in retreat from London
Now do the rest of the world.
freediverx··on Mortgage Rate jump up, slowing down the buyer market
I think many overlook the degree to which the housing market has been distorted by banks, private equity, and companies like AirBnB.

With a housing crisis in America, any decent, democratic government would have implemented regulatory changes to block or penalize purchases as financial instruments rather than homes.

freediverx··on EPA Ban of Gasoline-Powered Cars Will Slow Development of Electric Cars
A reminder that “Reason” is a libertarian propaganda rag.
freediverx··on Why does a plastic-wrapped turkey sandwich cost $15 at the NYC airport?
That’s a very pro-capitalist way of saying you don’t really care about free markets. If the airport authority allowed competition and/or if they only granted exclusivity tied to reasonable pricing, then this issue wouldn’t exist.
freediverx··on China’s BYD is overtaking Tesla as the carmaker extraordinaire
After visiting the BVD website, what’s remarkable to me is that they’re priced from $32-40k. From the photos at least, it looks like a $100k+ car, much more luxurious than a Tesla Model S. But then again, I’m probably just used to price gouging in the US.
freediverx··on GM plans to phase out Apple CarPlay in EVs, with Google's help
Is there a lot of crossover appeal between fans of Apple products and GM cars?

freediverx··on Text only news websites (2022)
Not sure of the premise behind this, so maybe I’m missing the point, but why not curate quality news sources and access them via an rss news reader like NetNewsWire?
freediverx··on Amazon to lay off 9,000 more workers after earlier cuts
ACA was useless when I was unemployed years ago.
freediverx··on Volkswagen’s ID. 2ALL Is a $26,000 EV Hatchback You’d Want to Drive
I'm in the US and I'm sick of the focus on SUVs and crossover vehicles. Shopping for a Mazda3 recently and the company seems to be bending over backwards to persuade me to get an SUV instead.
freediverx··on Volkswagen’s ID. 2ALL Is a $26,000 EV Hatchback You’d Want to Drive
BMW seems to strike the right balance between software and tactile controls, including the ergonomically-placed I-Drive buttons and knobs.
freediverx··on Volkswagen’s ID. 2ALL Is a $26,000 EV Hatchback You’d Want to Drive
I refuse to buy any car that replaces key physical controls with software. Of course, Tesla is off the list, but less because of design decisions and more because of Space Karen/Phoney Stark.
freediverx··on Volkswagen’s ID. 2ALL Is a $26,000 EV Hatchback You’d Want to Drive
VW will sell this car at $26K the same way Tesla sold the Model 3 at $30k.
freediverx··on Big Business’s relentless push to equate the free market with freedom
When we hear political hacks using the word “freedom” we must always ask “freedom for whom to do what?” The answer is always some variation on “the freedom for sociopaths to exploit and oppress others.”
freediverx··on The water technology behind Avatar: The Way of Water
I wish they’d invested a little less on the technology and a little more on the writing.
freediverx··on FDIC, Fed, Treasury to Brief California Lawmakers on SVB
Yes, they need to come together to figure out how to blame and punish poor people for this.
freediverx··on The rise and fall of Birchbox, the startup valued at nearly $500M has vanished
The fact that this company was founded by a couple of Harvard Business School grads, and that they and their investors didn’t immediately see this as a gimmicky and unsustainable business model, tells you everything you need to know about business schools and the world of venture capital. It’s mostly smoke and mirrors and quasi-Ponzi schemes.
freediverx··on Founders fund pulls money before SVB collapses
I love the part about the tech industry having a "moral imperative".
freediverx··on HP outrages printer users with firmware update suddenly bricking third-party ink
Why does anyone still buy anything from HP?
freediverx··on How ChatGPT was built from the people who made it
It’s already been demonstrated how most inflation has been caused by corporate profit seeking, much of this confirmed by corporate executives boasting to shareholders.

Please stop amplifying capitalist propaganda.

freediverx··on Official requests to ban selling Atomic Heart game
How about a companion piece against the romantization of capitalism?
freediverx··on Employee claims she can't use Microsoft Windows for “Religious Reasons”
I can think of many valid reasons for not wanting to use Windows. Religion ain’t one of them.
freediverx··on Starbucks illegally fired US workers over union, judge rules
Does the NLRB have any teeth? Can they impose fines? I’ve yet to see any of these rulings result in any meaningful changes.
freediverx··on Ask HN: Alternatives to Bing Search API
I’ve been using Kagi search for a while now. Is their API an option?
