free2rhyme214··on Uber losing $1B a year to compete in China
Uber already knows this. That's why they've partnered with Baidu and raised $2B from Chinese investors recently.

You really think Travis is going to lose in China? This isn't Google China in 2009. Travis partnered with the crazy guy who got Google kicked out of China.

I won't speculate that Uber will be dominate in China but there's no way they're going away anytime soon.

free2rhyme214··on The Yahoo Problem
Build something people want. When was the last time Yahoo did that?

I briefly used Yahoo Weather until they introduced huge ads and then deleted it. Prior to that I used Flickr and Yahoo Mail in 2004/2005.

free2rhyme214··on Silicon Valley startups rein in spending and prepare for layoffs
Answer - very few companies admit they over hired. Most will downplay stupidity.
free2rhyme214··on Silicon Valley startups rein in spending and prepare for layoffs
The trepidation in the market is certainly good for getting things back to reality.

I think Parker is really, really smart. If you hear him talk he sounds like he's somewhere on the intelligence level of Patrick Collison. It's too bad he tried to shortcut a regulated industry but I'm curious what his next ambitions are.
free2rhyme214··on Zenefits Software Helped Brokers Cheat On Licensing Process
CRM for government reminds me of the Ted Talk where a guy said the government should use source control. We're not there yet but it's a step in the right direction.

You guys should seriously consider using resellers and distributors btw. Gov't purchasing agents always request three competitive bids.

free2rhyme214··on PayPal CTO Resigns
I switched to Google Wallet. PayPal would take forever to send money and has done nothing for years to innovate. All they do is buy startups (Braintree). I think this is entirely true - when the founders leave, companies stop innovating.
free2rhyme214··on Yahoo to cut 15 percent jobs, close several units
Why didn't they innovate more?
free2rhyme214··on High Salaries Haunt Some Job Hunters
I don't think it's misleading. Companies know mistakes cost money and experience doesn't always associate with better productivity.
free2rhyme214··on High Salaries Haunt Some Job Hunters
This is a surprise, said no one ever.

Sometimes companies will pay for experience but often they'll hire someone younger who screws up more because they cost less.

free2rhyme214··on Dropbox May Not Be LeBron James, but Is Still in the Game
Dropbox is playing catch up with Box in the enterprise so they're hiring salespeople like crazy in San Francisco, Australia, New York and Europe.

Why you ask? Obviously because storage will be infinite and free in the future. Google Drive for education is already completely free.

https://www.google.com/edu/products/productivity-tools/

What that means is that Dropbox is shifting from a consumer to an enterprise company. We all know for consumers they're way too expensive - 1TB for $100 is way to much free space for the average person.

The problem is they've screwed up other things. Google owned Carousel with Google Photos. Mailbox turned out to be an overly expensive acqui-hire. Luckily that doesn't affect them that much because they raised a boatload of cash and have lots of customers.

Now will Dropbox go away or die? Probably not but they'll always be behind Box when it comes to enterprise features.

It's too bad Box and Dropbox can't merge. Box has crap sync and Dropbox lacks a lot of Enterprise features Box has.

free2rhyme214··on Yahoo to cut 15 percent jobs, close several units
Hiring is part of it but it's also about systematically launching products to create your own ecosystem.

Yahoo's never really built an ecosystem like Google and when you couple that with low performing acquisitions you get job cuts.

free2rhyme214··on Yahoo to cut 15 percent jobs, close several units
I don't work at Yahoo but I believe the answer is management.
free2rhyme214··on Yahoo to cut 15 percent jobs, close several units
In the past 10 years with Yahoo I - deleted Yahoo Weather after they put huge ads and briefly used Flickr.

In the past 10 years with Google I - use Gmail, Google Drive, Google docs, Google sheets, Search, Google Maps, Chrome, Waze and YouTube on a daily basis. I've also bought Chromecast and occasionally use Hangouts & Wallet. I'm excited about a lot of their Google X projects.

The 15% job cut is because Marissa Mayer failed to suck me and millions of others into the Yahoo ecosystem.

I think part of that is shifting Yahoo from a media company to something more like Google.

free2rhyme214··on UCOP Ordered Spyware Installed on UC Data Networks
Napolitano's decision was probably one of those that sounded good in theory until people found out about it.

If I was a professor I'd want to work somewhere where I feel safe and secure because it's eerie having someone standing over your shoulders, let alone 24/7.

You mentioned intellectual freedom which is a feeling of security. I find that feeling misleading in the US with the NSA's new data center in Utah collecting our information.

Still it would be wise of Napolitano to reverse course but I think it's unlikely given her background.

free2rhyme214··on UCOP Ordered Spyware Installed on UC Data Networks
Ditto. I don't find this surprising either.

If you work for someone else, they can do whatever they want with your communications on their devices.

I don't work at Berkeley but my guess is their system can do more than record emails which is extremely pervasive.

free2rhyme214··on Japan Must Let Zombie Companies Die
I was in Tokyo in 2013 and 2014. I remember seeing lots of salarymen all dressed the same, also government workers all dressed the same with their little badges on their sleeves and I couldn't help thinking about the lack of individuality in their culture.

It doesn't surprise me that Japan is mimicking the U.S. by bailing out failing local companies.

The real issue with Japan is their lack of entrepreneurship. They used to be fierce competitors but are now more of an afterthought.
