fred92··on Ask HN: Have you ever experienced workplace 'mobbing' by managers or directors?
I happen to have a lot of insight into the situation and in this case there is also written "proof" (good feeedback, good ratings from a lot of other people etc.) Of course there is always two sides to a story.

Since I for obvious reasons can't go into a lot of details this is more of a hypotetical: Assuming there is a bad apple director what should one do?

I do generally agree with also giving directors/managers the benefit of the doubt of course and not immediately jumping to feeling targeted/mobbed.

fred92··on The Quiet Revolution of the Sabbath
The unfair thing about retail and service industry establishments not being closed on sundays while white collar office jobs are, is that schools are only open during the week, thus retail and service industry workers don't get tax-payer funded child-care on those days, kids of blue collar workers don't get to hang with their parents on the weekend furthening inequality inherent in our society. Obviously noone is per se forced to work on the weekend but in practice at every retail and service industry job I have worked at throughout my life there was immense pressure to work at least one weekend day i.e you won't even get these jobs if you aren't willing to work on weekends.
fred92··on Unequal consumption lies at the heart of the climate crisis
or in other words why does everyone here think that the moment we talk about individual responsibility nobody will ever think or talk about cooperations responsibilities and large scale legislative solutions anymore? What is the precedent here that I am missing?
fred92··on Unequal consumption lies at the heart of the climate crisis
why does there seem to be this false dichotomy in the comments here of, if climate change is caused by individual actions, it cannot be caused by cooperations and vica versa? Both of these are true and they are entangled. And the solution is obviously on both fronts as well. We need people to not fly long distance for team offsites and family reunions once a quarter, we also need to have changes in legislation/political system to make it easier to go to work without a car, have changes in legislation to require flight companies to carbon offset helping with the first point etc etc etc. Why does the focus have to be on either or, I don't see it.
fred92··on Ask HN: How do you deal with life altering decisions?
Go nuts. Rethink everything a million times. Sleep on it. Think about it in the light of past life altering decissions. Do it. If you regret it try cycling back if you can, retrace your steps. Go nuts, overthink it get a better and better model of how the world works. E.g after renting three apartments you will know more about the intricacies of the housing market this may or may not help you when renting a fourth apartment, after living in three countries you will know more about geopolitics and cultural diversity, this may or may not increase your happiness. Ultimately there are a lot of tiny and big life decission that will have a huge impact on your life quality, with most of them there is no real way of knowing beforehand how they will impact your life quality short-term and long-term. You just gotta wing it, that's life ...

UCLA's Mechanical differential analyzer described as a brain having a mind. Fascinating!
fred92··on Ask HN: Favorite purchases of last two years?
Finally caved and bought myself a light down jacket (https://www.rei.com/product/154226/rei-co-op-650-down-jacket...) initially for hiking but as it turns out there is a reason you see so many people wearing these in the bay area. It is perfect for cool/windy bay-area/SF evenings. Have been wearing it almost every day for the past year.

Also a robot vacuum. I didn't think it would work for me but I started forming a habit where I tidy and then turn it on whenever I am leaving my apartment and the cleanliness/effort ratio is of the charts.

And this beautifully drawn book: https://www.amazon.com/Best-Coast-Illustrated-Adventures-His... Spent so many blissful hours daydreaming/researching about road-trips.
