frankc··on The other kind of staff software engineer
When reading this I was thinking that this distinction sounds more like what I know as profit center/cost center. I was glad to see a sidebar mentioning that he thinks its related. Maybe its more common to use that terminology in finance, which is really the only industry i've worked in. I've not heard line/staff used in this way but profit center/cost center is well known.

I will say that I don't really agree that profit center/cost center is less clear terminolgy or doesnt have the right boundries. I'd argue the opposite. It's a pretty direct description of why any distinction exists at all. It's also pretty inuitive that its preferable to be in a role tied to how the company generates money. Line/Staff terminology requires nice blog posts to explain what those things are. Maybe in a military context it makes sense because there is no profit center per se, but for industry, using line/profit terminology is just a whitewash of profit center/cost center, which is imo the real distinction.

Of course the classification of profit/cost is not perfect as there are jobs kind of in the the middle, like say if you are an internal recruiter (you recruit profit center people too so...) but I don't think those roles are easier to classify as line/staff either.

frankc··on Outdated Answers: accepted answer is now unpinned on Stack Overflow
I remember when I used to post to stackoverflow (havent in years at this point), if I asked a question I would literally get harassed if I did not mark of the answers as correct. One of many reasons I stopped participating. It's a user hostile experience.
frankc··on Ask HN: Senior Software Engineer to Engineering Manager
That is partly on you but also more on your manager. He should be talking about where you want to go with your career in 1-1s and certainly in reviews.
frankc··on Intel’s 11th Gen Core Tiger Lake SoC Detailed
At this point though intel has slashed their price/core to be competitive if not better than threadripper. They don't have anything that compete in core count, but if you look at the 9980/10980 series with 18 cores, its very competitive on a price basis per core with the 24/32/64 core threadrippers. If you want max cores then you still need to go with threadripper but if 18 is enough, i don't get all the hate 10980 gets. There are certain linear algebra related workloads where the intels excel and why I would probably go with the 10980x were I to upgrade (which im probably not, 4 year old pc doing fine)
frankc··on Ask HN: What are some good resources to learn business administration/finance?
If you want a really well rounded finance background, you could pursue the level 1 CFA exam, or the curriculum of it. If you are not looking to pass the current exam, you can get older books for almost nothing used.

If you want to actually pass the exam, you need to register and get the current curriculum. You should be prepared to put in to 200 to 300 hours of study for this, though. Its a lot of material.

If you are not looking to pass the exam, I would recommend going through the accounting section and the economics section. The corporate finance section would probably also be useful.

If you were to pursue all 3 exams and pass, you would have a knowledge base that exceeds an MBA in finance. The MBA has other things the CFA can't give you though like project and presentation experience.

frankc··on US homebuilding surges as coronavirus sparks flight to suburbs, rural areas
What makes you think they want to move back in 6 months? Moving is a big deal, you are right about that. It's not impossible to do in a couple of months if you have the means to put down 20% and get a traditional mortgage.
frankc··on US homebuilding surges as coronavirus sparks flight to suburbs, rural areas
I agree its a recent phenomenon but it's not just the virus. I was born in raised in the city. I remember the bad old days. I see what's happening with the far left and their want to gut the NYPD and I foresee it backsliding into the bad old days. Crime is already ticking up but it's too early to point at that and say it's happening. It's a longer term projection I am making.
frankc··on Initial Impressions of WSL 2
This works very well. Another thing I do that works well, and I don't really see it brought up anywhere, is to use nomachine to connect to localhost. It's not seamless in the sense that you have linux apps side-by-side with native windows, but it gives you a full linux desktop experience (you need to install a linux desktop and wm in wsl for this to work well). Combining this with windows virtual desktop i can flip back and forth between windows and linux instantly without any vm.
frankc··on Initial Impressions of WSL 2
You never know but as has been pointed out in different parts of this post, they have two different use cases in a sense. Windows developers who were using WSL1 aren't going to like the changes and i've heard a lot of complaints. However, people using primarily linux with windows as a nice shell with good hardware support and games are going to prefer WSL2. I think if they want to win over the biggest group of devs, and I feel pretty good about that since they were losing traction with them for years, they will maintain both, at least for a good while.
frankc··on Proposed bounty for adding virtual camera / microphone support natively to OBS
OBS can do all of that except nativley output a virtual camera. I use windows and the virtual cam plugin works well for that, though it doesnt do the audio. I think you can set it up externally to obs using a virtual audio cable driver but I haven't really needed it.
frankc··on Corporate buzzwords are how workers pretend to be adults
I think we are in agreement?
frankc··on Corporate buzzwords are how workers pretend to be adults
Just a minor correction. The ex-date is not necessarily the date it is paid. It is the day after holders of the security are entitled to the dividend. The actual pay date comes later. The important thing is that the price of the security adjusts on the ex-date because the money has now been allocated.

It's like the Pulp song Common People. The moral is that you will never have the same experience as common people because you dont have the same existential dread.
frankc··on Logistic Regression from Bayes’ Theorem
I think it's a little more complicated then that. A variable might not be linear in general but may be approximately linear within a certain range of values. You might fit the model on values only within that linear range and thus get a good fit. The model may be very useful inside the range of fitted values but garbage at extrapolation. As long as you understand the limitations it can still be a useful model.

frankc··on Why is the ‘race to 5G’ a race?
This title does not match what is in the article at all. It's about the race to first, not the technology in general.

frankc··on Fortnite is free, but kids are getting bullied into spending money
I guess i'm kind of old now but it's odd because I seem to remember that when I played mmorpgs, especially pvp, it was the reverse. Players who were decked out in fancy armor that they did not directly earn in game were called 'twinkies' and generally derided. When I played guild wars, most of the good pvp people just had default outfits. The pve players with fancy clothes who came into pvp generally were viewed as worse at pvp (and it was often true because their builds did not translate well into pvp).

frankc··on US housing market hit a ‘significant slowdown’ in recent weeks, Redfin CEO says
There are also perfectly valid use cases for interest only mortgages. The classic case is for people with highly variable incomes, for instance people working on commission or people working in bonus driven industries. In lean years you pay just then interest and in healthy years you pay down some principle.
frankc··on Twitter ‘smytes’ customers
I don't know how it works in Silicon valley, but finance companies I have worked for have pretty much always required that source code be turned over if the vendor folds when doing business with small vendors.
frankc··on 90-minute ‘super commutes’ more common as Bay Area housing shortage intensifies
I find longer commutes more tolerable if it's by mass transit, so long as you know you will have a seat. There are a lot of ways to be productive or enjoy your time, where as with a car, you are pretty much limited to audio. I see where you are coming from with the interpersonal stuff but at least you still have the weekend.

frankc··on Stock Markets Tumble Amid Worries Over Tech Firms and Trade Tensions
The stock market is not "the economy". Ultimately AMZN's price will be reconciled with it's earnings. It's possible that future earnings will be affected by higher shipping costs, but if the USPS is being too generous (I have no idea) then everyone except AMZN is a winner if a better deal is negotiated.

frankc··on Learning to program is getting harder
There is a certain amount of systems administration knowledge you need to have if you are going to be an effective programmer. No, you don't need to be a sysadmin, but but source code doesn't live in a vacuum. I vote for face the pain.
