frandroid··on Demand for medical equipment is making air cargo fees ‘crazy’
Looks like someone could start making cargo containers that secure into BFE, once the seats are removed...
frandroid··on Dutch museum says van Gogh painting stolen in overnight raid
And you've just decided that the "replica" was so good that you paid stolen-art-on-the-black-market money for it, not "good replica painter" money for it...
frandroid··on Dark mode for Stack Overflow
The former uses the right word order.
frandroid··on Roche releases Covid-19 test recipe, after EC considers intervention
Saving the economy which will then be able to afford multiple Roche products is a pretty good payment, methinks.
frandroid··on One corner of U.S. oil market has already seen negative prices
I don't know if out of work oil workers will move out of Alberta, but Alberta is famously full of Newfoundlanders who have left that high-unemployment province. (NL's fishing industry, once its primary employer, has been moribund for a few decades.)

Obviously, a COVID-19-triggered recession would not create an employment boom to replace oil jobs.

(FTR: I support the immediate shutdown of the tar sands, but we need a job replacement/retraining strategy...)

frandroid··on One corner of U.S. oil market has already seen negative prices
You might want to avoid paying hefty municipal taxes or another impending viability, at which point paying less than taxes might sound like a cheaper alternative to get rid of the house.

Same with these oil producers. There might be too much crude sitting on trucks going to an already-full storage facility, and they need to clear space in order to empty trucks, even if production upstream has already shut down.

frandroid··on Pouring one out for the end of O’Reilly’s in-person conferences
Local events won't pull in luminaries from around the continent/world spending serious time preparing their presentation, though...
frandroid··on Ask HN: Best sleep trackers?
I'm surprised no one mentioned Sleep as Android yet... Super-integrated into third-party tools (sometimes as paid extras)
frandroid··on Private client-side-only PWAs are hard, but now Apple made them impossible
I run away from services that only allow social media logins.

1) I don't want social media to track me everywhere

2) If the people developing this app have taken this shortcut, what other bad, leaky implementations do they have on their site/app?

-> No thanks, exit this way

frandroid··on Albert Uderzo has died
Speaking of crudeness, Hergé's worldview was pretty racist... Those first 9 albums or so are pretty cringeworthy. Especially considering that they've been rewritten a couple times to adapt to changing times.

(I say that as a huge Tintin fan growing up.)

frandroid··on Canadian athletes will not compete at Tokyo 2020 Games due to Covid-19 risks
You can't have competitive sports during a pandemic, full stop. It's not a question of will, it's a question of basic public health, and putting a few brain cells together. Athletes will not compete in PPE...
frandroid··on Army Corps of Engineers to Build Temporary Hospitals in NY
That was least of China's worries. They clearly focused on pandemic resolution at the expense of everything else.
frandroid··on ARM-Ed Mac: We Have an Answer

I wish I had a super-like for this answer.

frandroid··on California governor issues statewide 'stay at home' order
It really doesn't matter whether it's 4 or 30 million in 8 weeks, because by the time you reach a million people contaminated, you'll have overwhelmed California's ICU and ventilator capacity. People with all kinds of critical conditions, on top of critical COVID-19 cases, will die from lack of care.
frandroid··on California governor issues statewide 'stay at home' order
And the curve is still going upwards. Are they all wanting to die?

frandroid··on Is China Ground Zero for a Future Pandemic? (2017)

frandroid··on For Years WallStreet Spent More on Buybacks Than It Earned-Now They Want Bailout
He's been in denial for weeks, event calling it a Democratic Party hoax to try to take him down, instead of starting to take early measures.
frandroid··on For Years WallStreet Spent More on Buybacks Than It Earned-Now They Want Bailout
If he's not crucified by his base for letting the disease go rampant, he won't get crucified for anything else. In any rational country his approval ratings would be in the teens, not the forties, right now.
frandroid··on For Years WallStreet Spent More on Buybacks Than It Earned-Now They Want Bailout
1) Hoping Trump will have a backbone when facing corporate cronies 2) Hoping that executives will skip bonuses, after seeing what happened to Wall Street in 2008

In the old language of my ancestors, rotfl.

frandroid··on The Mystery of the Missing Bus Riders
> How about a button at each stop, with a live estimate when the bus will arrive?

There are already many, many apps for that.

Google Maps will give you some decent good route mapping and alternatives, though less realtime than apps that use data back ends like NextBus.

You can do better routing than Google if you're familiar with a route/combination and its intricacies, but if you're in a part of town you don't know as much, Google Maps' transit routing is a godsend.
