frandroid··on The cognitive costs of air pollution
Mexico City sits in a former volcano, so the air pollution of one of the world's largest metropolitan areas is trapped in there.
frandroid··on Google search results have more human help than you think, report finds
This is really useful advice, thank you.
frandroid··on 16-inch MacBook Pro
Because removing ports and peripherals is a thing that Apple keeps doing.
frandroid··on AI Clones Your Voice After Listening for 5 Seconds (2018)
The synthesized voices sound similar but would probably not fool a good voice-print system.
frandroid··on Krispy Kreme strikes deal with kid who drives 250 miles to resell its doughnuts
No, cutting that guy's source of income.
frandroid··on Krispy Kreme strikes deal with kid who drives 250 miles to resell its doughnuts
In your case, it would be a problem because you need to defend your copyright in order to keep ownership of it.

But in this case, the guy isn't making a different product with the same name, he's just reselling the bloody product. So this has nothing with trademark protection, just their "quality standard", as if people buying the donuts from his trunk didn't know that they spent 4 hours in his car before getting there...

frandroid··on “Is your startup idea taken?” and why we love X for Y startups
I found the X in white on white at the top right. Maybe a browser bug, I'm in Firefox.
frandroid··on DNA database that found Golden State Killer is potential national security leak
> called the new security research a large-scale demonstration of weaknesses already known to enthusiasts.

"Already known". So when the hell are they going to take their service down until they find a way to secure it??

frandroid··on Apple Commits $2.5B to Ease California Housing Crunch
https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/car-releases-its-20...

Home resales forecast for 2020: 393,500

Median forecast price: $608,000

Total resale market size: $235,800,000,000

235 billion dollars.

I don't see Apple making much of a difference on their own.

frandroid··on Fast Ads Matter
Variable height ad slots on mobile are one of my pet peeves... "why is the page moving? The ad is not even visible on the page!"
frandroid··on Text Editing Hates You Too
Some subcontinental scripts have ligatures between vowels and consonants in almost every word so that ship has sailed anyway.
frandroid··on Browser extension restores removed YouTube videos
This does not /restore/ videos. It looks for equivalents substitutes. This does not not seem like a secret pathway to find a link to the original content (which Youtube likely still hangs to even if it claims it is delete...). Instead, it claims to look for another copy and swap that on the page.
frandroid··on US Constitution – A Git repo with history of edits
Did his grade eventually get upgraded to A, or was the paper just badly written in spite of this great insight?
frandroid··on FTC Brings First Case Against Developers of “Stalking” Apps
I agree. Those making analogies are trying to obfuscate the issue, that's the problem...
frandroid··on FTC Brings First Case Against Developers of “Stalking” Apps
The problem here is that these manufacturers sell knives which, when configured by a jealous partner, can automatically stab the cook who's using them to chop vegetables.

The manufacturer should make it obvious to the cook that their knife has been modified that way.

It is quite clear in this case that the app developer has developed the app to obfuscate this configuration, and thus shares in the responsibility.

frandroid··on AWS Customers Rack Up Hefty Bills for Moving Data
Obviously you'll still need some staff. But suddenly you don't need staff that knows how to handle physical server rooms and data centers, you limit it to AWS which covers a whole range of needs which would need to be addressed by different staff with different skillsets.
frandroid··on AWS Customers Rack Up Hefty Bills for Moving Data
It's not just the fear of buying a computer, it's also the fear of hiring staff...
frandroid··on “We have no reason to believe 5G is safe”
Meat barbecued with 5G
frandroid··on ET Don't Phone Home
This is how it should work, and it is exactly NOT how it will ever work, because it turns the manufacturers into commodity providers with very low profit margins. Whereas if they keep the software and the hardware integrated and inseparable they can charge higher margins, and eventually integrate these items in their ecosystem (à la Apple and Google), in which both the user and the company benefit from collective synergy/network effects.
frandroid··on Prashanth Chandrasekar Replacing Joel Spolsky as Stack Overflow CEO
Stack Overflow has a much smaller version of Wikipedia's God-complex moderator nerd problem, where some people with no life moderate and focus on their own vanity metrics rather than the quality of what they moderate.

But SO is still pretty damn useful, like Wikipedia.

frandroid··on Shipping wind turbines is not a breeze
Once it's 200m up in the air it doesn't look so big anymore, especially if it's not right above roads.
frandroid··on Shipping wind turbines is not a breeze
Came here to say the same thing--Looks like they're doing enough business to consider blimps.
frandroid··on Amazon fires: Brazil threatened over EU trade deal
> there should be some compensation given under the form of a tax to keep the forest alive, I don't think that would be ecological blackmail at all.

Norway has already been providing Brazil financial assistance linked to Amazon forest preservation since 2008, and is now reacting to the current events:

frandroid··on Yield Curves Invert in U.S., U.K

Took them a while to see what everyone else can see in plain daylight...

frandroid··on Drones replace patrol ships on Mediterranean
> Well I don't think "anyone" in Europe wants to send these migrants to the bottom of the sea.

frandroid··on Drones replace patrol ships on Mediterranean
These. People. Deserve. Asylum. Let's say you have to flee the U.S., will you go to Russia ("they have cell coverage!") or will you go to France? My money is that you'll pick France and you'll fight for it.
frandroid··on Drones replace patrol ships on Mediterranean
> There is also a third option, which is to send them somewhere else. There are a number of countries in Africa that are poor, but still aren't in the midst of any active war or genocide. If you're from a country that is, why not go there?

Because if you're going to uproot your life, you're not going to simply go to another miserable country like Bulgaria, you'll go to a country where it's worth moving to. When you buy a new phone, do you buy last year's phone ("it's good enough!") or do you buy the damn best phone you can afford ("it'll last me a long time!")? France will "last" someone a longer time than Bulgaria.

frandroid··on Drones replace patrol ships on Mediterranean
They're using the drones to conduct other patrolling duties, not to save migrants.
frandroid··on Google and Mozilla are failing to support browser extension developers
Their core business is to have a useful/featureful browser. Browsers gain extra features thanks to extensions. One of the reasons that keeps me with Firefox are many of its extensions. They almost lost me as a user when they deprecated a gazilion tons of extensions last year. I would say extensions are an integral part of the browser offering even if produced by third-parties.
frandroid··on Cracking My Windshield and Earning $10k on the Tesla Bug Bounty Program
The repository would show who wrote the bug in the first place, and it would have to pass code review. One would have to wait for the developer to leave the company before activating this scenario.
