frandroid··on A vegan diet could affect your intelligence
Neat!
frandroid··on A vegan diet could affect your intelligence
> As for Gandhi, he eventually abandoned his illicit relationship with meat, and went back to vegetarianism.

That was a commitment he took for his mother when he went to study law in England. While today the UK is a hotbed of veg*nism, back then Gandhi had trouble eating well while being veg in London, and started seeking out other vegetarians. He eventually found a vegetarian society, and it is through that society that he became exposed to Henry David Thoreau and his Civil Disobedience.

The rest, as they say, is world history.

> Along with the children who received soup with added oil, they also did the best on a test of arithmetic ability.

So huh, really, it was the extra calories, not the meat per se.

> In the winter months, when the sun is weaker, omnivores living in the UK have nearly 40% more vitamin D3 in their blood than vegans.

...Because milk is artificially supplemented with D3! Funny that.

> No one has looked into how this might be affecting their cognitive abilities yet

So don't be a scaremonger?

> As for Gandhi

In theory. In practice, they often negotiate it with their board.

Narrator: It still requires a political solution

As if economics isn't political?

I'm on Android but I see where you're getting at here, thanks for the idea.

Yeah, I would love to be able to have a list shortcut on my phone's homescreen.

frandroid··on The Attempted Corporate Takeover of .Org
I was tongue in cheek with my comment, but I enjoy JWZ's "previously" links and tags can help traverse the history that you're working to preserve.

The simplicity you mention is worth a lot, though.

frandroid··on The technical report suggesting Saudi Arabia's prince hacked Bezos' phone
Meh. I mean sure, Bezos has been a different media owner than Rupert Murdoch, but in the end, the WaPo enforces the neoliberal order, with some sprinkling of liberal concern to re-assure people that yes, humanist concerns are important. But you won't find an editorial line that challenges capitalism, or wanton CO2 emissions which will rapidly kill our planet.

Or Amazon, for that matter. Not an unimportant factor considering Bezos' position atop the pyramid...

You mean how faillible they were? I recall many stories were about how someone died or had an accident because of overzealous or faulty interpretation of the laws... :)
frandroid··on Bruce Schneier: Banning Facial Recognition Isn’t Enough
Noam Chomsky, commenting on 9/11 conspiracy theories, was saying that one of the things that made them impossible in retrospect is that secrets are very difficult to keep, that there are always people who will leak something.

But one thing that really stuck in my craw is how the military intelligence Chelsea Manning had access to later on was accessible by thousands of people, and there are very few who have followed her example. Similar with Snowden, except that much fewer people had his kind of access.

frandroid··on Ask HN: Do you ever contact people who have had a positive impact on you?
My father was a rather quiet person who was nice, known as a honest and hard worker, and was appreciated by many. When he took his own life, over a thousand people came to the funeral mass. We shook everyone's hand; each and every person was very sad and upset by his unexpected passing. If he had known how many people thought so fondly of him, I think he might have decided to go on living.

How about we don't start looking at the /how/ a site is made, when it's already difficult to sort out the /what/ it is.

What support does anyone need to use Confluence? How many people _use_ that support?
frandroid··on Startup Ideas 2020
I've bumped into two organizations which use Confluence for developer reference rather than Github's own repo-based wikis. Why??? In one case a manager even made us move an extensive github wiki to Confluence. After that, developers stopped using the reference and that had an impact on code quality. WTF.

There are already some good general purpose wiki providers out there, too!

frandroid··on Bacteria and sand engineered into living concrete
I'm talking about lime-based cement, which predates Portland cement and steel-reinforced concrete. Portland cement is a huge source of CO2 emissions.
frandroid··on Microsoft’s quest to go ‘carbon negative’ inspires $1B fund
That's what BC did. Its ideologically conservative government at the time introduced a carbon tax going into general revenues, and lowered general taxes, so that the carbon tax is revenue-neutral.
frandroid··on What DoorDash pays, after expenses, and what’s happening with tips
Food delivery apps have made 80% of restaurants realize that their customers would pay $8-$10 more per order for delivery. Before that customers didn't have the option and most restaurants just figured it wasn't for them. It's a huge new market.
frandroid··on What DoorDash pays, after expenses, and what’s happening with tips
That's basically real-time.
frandroid··on Bacteria and sand engineered into living concrete
We already have slow-curing low-emissions concrete, which has existed for centuries. Fast setting is a core feature of modern (Portland) concrete, and any "replacement" which doesn't do that is not a replacement at all. Companies want to build their 40-story towers in 6 months, not 6 years.
frandroid··on How The New York Times Verified the Iran Missile-Strike Footage
I thought about that too but media have a lot to lose in terms of credibility if it gets exposed. I'd bet you there was a NYT lawyer in touch with that journalist ASAP when they published that tweet if the journalist hadn't been in touch with legal beforehand.
frandroid··on Introducing Increment subscriptions
I don't know what the downvoters or the Parent think they're saying, but companies cannot produce "zines", by definition. Zines are produced by individuals. A company "zine" is a magazine, no matter how "cool" and lofi the layout.
