frakt0x90··on Jamming Attacks and Anti-Jamming Strategies in Wireless Networks
Would it also be possible to estimate your location in the store using multiple access points and the latency between them? They might use that to track where people spend their time.
frakt0x90··on How bad is your Spotify?
I see a lot of comments about how bad spotify recommendations are. I have had great experience but I follow a methodology to keep the recommendations curated. I'll also note that I listen to a wide variety of music ranging from EDM to metal to high enery jpop to classical. What I have found is:

- Adding things to playlists makes a big difference. If you really love a song, hit it with a heart, if you want to hear more but don't love it, add it to a relevant playlist

- skip mildly bad songs

- actively dislike terrible songs (hide it on mobile, hit the no smoking sign on desktop)

I got into a chill beats phase and it took a couple months for me to eradicate it from my discover weekly but now it's pretty on point. Just my 2 cents.

frakt0x90··on Ask HN: Best Paid Gmail Replacement?
Nothing of value to add to this convo but I de-googlified 2 years ago and chose fastmail since it's cheap and extremely easy to convert to. I've also had 0 complaints.
frakt0x90··on Creative Code-Generated Art
Also check out the stuff at shadertoy.com! A ton of that is high quality art and the things people can do with 100 lines of code is absolutely incredible.

"PRELIMINARY AND INCOMPLETE: PLEASE DO NOT CIRCULATE" Guess someone didn't heed the warning.
frakt0x90··on Who Americans spend their time with, by age
I experienced this first hand when I visited my wife's family in Vietnam. All 10 or so of them live in homes side by side on the outskirts of Saigon. Everyone woke up in the morning and cooked for each other. Every day was like a little party. It was so nice to have that much support around all the time. I have never experienced anything like that in the US. Of course having family literally at your doorstep has its pros and cons but it worked really well for them.
frakt0x90··on Elon Musk moves to Texas
I'm sure it has nothing to do with Texas having no state income tax...
frakt0x90··on Decoding Helicopter GPS Coordinates from a YouTube Video (2014)
Her blog is full of all kinds of really cool projects! I encourage you to check them out.
frakt0x90··on My friend starts her job today, after learning to program in prison
I mean yeah in this particular case, but the broader point still stands that prison needs to be less of a career death sentence and employers should open up to the idea of hiring former prisoners. And that there needs to be substantial reform for the prison system and that you should join a support group similar to hers to help these people out.
frakt0x90··on Bean Machine – A Declarative Probabilistic Programming Language
The paper for the language is here https://pgm2020.cs.aau.dk/wp-content/uploads/2020/09/tehrani... and the benefits over other PPLs are listed at a high level in the abstract.
frakt0x90··on Amnesia is now open source
I played through the first and part of the second. First one is quite scary and has an engaging story!
frakt0x90··on Verne Edquist – Glenn Gould’s Piano Man
I disagree. It's like a painter putting their name/face in a painting. I always smile when I hear his humming come through and I rather enjoy his own vocal counterpoint.
frakt0x90··on University of Utah pays $457k to ransomware gang
I have to say I think ransomware is one of the most interesting "business" practices. The trustworthiness of the criminals is huge because if they have a track record of providing the decryption key, you may as well pay.

In a logical extreme you could start adding features like "Give us the info of people you know and for every one we successfully extract a ransom from we'll give you 10% off your ransom."

It's interesting to think about at least.

frakt0x90··on Wiki Bankruptcy
I've seen this with people that receive tons of email as well. They're out for a month and have 10k emails to sort through. Instead of doing that, they send a message to everyone who sent them an email that if it was important they should re-send. Then just delete everything.
frakt0x90··on FAA issues emergency directive on 2,000 Boeing 737 NG, Classic planes
You still have to keep the aircraft's normal maintenance schedule even when it's in storage.
frakt0x90··on The Winnebago Heli-Home Was a Real Flying RV
I work for a giant airline and used to work directly with the maintenance cost data. I only know about the 737 size, but if you want the plane to be able to fly, the plane has to go under a major overhaul every 2 years (plus a slew of other stuff). The cost of those are frequently in the 6-7 figures each depending on the year. If you don't need it to fly, I know there are restaurants made out of 737 shells that operate just fine so the cost should be feasible for a small business level of income.

Assuming 330 is undergraduate level, they're teaching the full gambit of practitioners, theorists, and future drop outs.
