fracus··on Ask HN: Is Reddit going the way of Stack Overflow?
Stack Overflow is dead because of AI. Devs can get quicker answers with less hassle with AI. Without AI there is no other option for amateur devs to get answers, so Stack Overflow would otherwise still be used. This isn't difficult logic.
fracus··on Ask HN: Is Reddit going the way of Stack Overflow?
I think Stack Overflow went dead because of AI specifically. The issues you mention just made that transition easier for people. Before AI, people had no choice but to suffer the toxic mods at Stack Overflow.

Reddit isn't comparable, as AI has not replaced human opinion.

fracus··on What Is the Fourier Transform?
Learning about the FT in engineering and how it can represent pretty much any repeating signal was mind blowing. It was the culmination of so much learning in mathematics that brought me to that wow moment.
fracus··on Why Radiology AI Didn't Work and What Comes Next
It seems to me some of the problems they relate would be applicable to any application with possible life and death consequences.
fracus··on Neuralink 'Participant 1' says his life has changed
It isn't always pragmatic to account for the 5% of people who misinterpret what is being said or who aren't able to contextualize because they are stupid. We've all misinterpreted obvious things before. It isn't that big of a deal.
fracus··on Neuralink 'Participant 1' says his life has changed
"I" think was obvious
fracus··on Neuralink 'Participant 1' says his life has changed
From what I've read, if you are blind from birth, but visual signals were suddenly restored, your brain wouldn't know how to process them. Blind from birth = blind forever. I'm not certain though.
fracus··on Neuralink 'Participant 1' says his life has changed
I think it was obvious they meant the condition of blindness cant't be worse.
fracus··on A visual introduction to big O notation
Having gone through electrical engineering, I always felt that Big O notation was never properly explained unless I happened to miss every time it was introduced. It always felt like it was just hand waived as something we should already know. I'm curious what level of math or computer science is usually responsible for introducing it.
fracus··on Leeches and the Legitimizing of Folk-Medicine
This reminds me of the joke..

"What do you call alternative medicine that works? .. Medicine.

fracus··on Lobster found 250 miles from where it was tagged
400km in 9 months seems pretty quick for a lobster as they mention they don't typically travel in straight lines. I wonder if they are helped by any currents at the bottom of the sea.
fracus··on Battlefield 6, day 1 cheats despite kernel anticheat and Secure Boot with TPM2.0 [video]
I'd imagine this to be an inside job. Some dev had this all lined up.
fracus··on White House Preps Order to Punish Banks That Discriminate Against Conservatives
It's really disheartening when people completely miss the underlying issue, whether in good faith or bad. This is another cut to you democracy to its death by a thousand cuts. This should be obvious to everyone by now.
fracus··on Trump order pushes forcible hospitalization of homeless people
They are taking an awkward route towards universal healthcare. I don't think their system is set up to handle these cases and I expect push back from the private system. My guess is he doesn't really care about their welfare, he just wants them out of sight, so the hospital visit will serve only to "diagnose" and then ship them off to some ad hoc concentration camp somewhere far.
fracus··on Cops say criminals use a Google Pixel with GrapheneOS – I say that's freedom
The argument "why do you care about your privacy if you have nothing to hide" needs to be addressed. The problem with this argument is you don't decide what you need to hide or not, the authorities do, and we all know authorities can be corrupted. Just look at the US government right now for example A.

Just as an example. You are gay. You live in a gay friendly place. Until one day, a new government takes office that will incarcerate gay people. They now have access to every one's phones who previously had nothing to hide.

fracus··on “Reading Rainbow” was created to combat summer reading slumps
I honestly just loved the theme song and the good vibes, but yeah, I didn't really watch it watch it.
fracus··on What Was Cyberpunk? In Memoriam: 1980-2020 (2020)
Lack of any neon lights?
fracus··on Developer angry that App Store is removing game that hasn't been updated in 7 yr
How do you prune the ecosystem without having to do any real work? Just filter out apps that aren't updated in a specific time frame. I suppose they expect you to update the app even if it doesn't need it to prove it hasn't been abandoned. Seems like a really lazy and impersonal solution.
fracus··on You Are in a Box
I didn't know that was a thing. It's purpose seems to be different for the sake of being different.
fracus··on Let's Learn x86-64 Assembly (2020)
I'd love to fool around in assembly but I can't think of anything interesting to do with it.
fracus··on Amazon CEO says AI agents will soon reduce company's corporate workforce
It would make sense for the government to tax these companies using AI so they can put the money towards social programs.
fracus··on Dépanneurs
I recently learned from this web site that "all dressed" pizza is only used by the English population in Quebec to refer to a mushrooms, green pepper, pepperoni pizza The Quebec French use "tout garnie" which a direct translation. I wonder which was first.
fracus··on Dépanneurs
7-11s are really popular and pimped out in Asia.
fracus··on Bypassing Google's big anti-adblock update
> But I don't know how to make an adblocker, so I decided to report the issue to Google in August 2023. It was patched in Chrome 118 by checking whether extensions usin

Well, thanks for nothing?

fracus··on The fish kick may be the fastest subsurface swim stroke yet (2015)
You can't reward failure in competition. You will get people purposely going slower to get the middle lanes. What they could swim in a pool in which they aren't using the outer lanes, so bigger pools, or less swimmers.
fracus··on Musk says Robotaxi coming to CA, but no one other than shareholders believe him
For reasons I won't get into, I was forced to watch a youtube commercial that basically functioned as propaganda for investing in Tesla stock. It was set up as an interview and the man said Tesla made a huge breakthrough in AI and that was the future value of Tesla (presumably to distract investors from their failing car business). The whole thing was super cringe and smelled of desperation.
fracus··on Quantum Entanglement in Your Brain Is What Generates Consciousness
I don't think the article was about "quantum effects" but specifically "quantum entanglement" which I'd guess transistors in CPUs cannot do.
fracus··on Quantum Entanglement in Your Brain Is What Generates Consciousness
> Additionally, the idea of quantum entanglement playing a role in consciousness isn’t a mainstream one

No one in this article guesses at what role it would play.

fracus··on Preliminary report into Air India crash released
Sounds likely that one of them was sabotaging the flight.
fracus··on Amazon warehouse workers lose jobs after Trump's immigration crackdown
Policy reversals such as this are undermining people's trust in the US government, locally and abroad. You can't trust the United States to honor its agreements and policies through administration changes or just on the whims of incompetence.
