foxyv··on Anthropic is "destructively scanning" books. Should you care?
I don't understand. I have access to all of Anthropic's models right now? Also, I don't have access to books that were destroyed in a dumpster.
foxyv··on Anthropic is "destructively scanning" books. Should you care?
Better in a computer than in a dumpster has always been my contention. We throw away a LOT of books every day. Just ask any librarian, used book store owner, or publisher's warehouse.

foxyv··on Zelensky says Russia has widened attacks to hit Ukraine's data centres
Why would Ukraine need to cede territory to get military aid they are already getting and _not_ be able join NATO? That would be like trading your back yard to your neighbor in exchange for your front porch not being burned down while the neighbor warms up the flame thrower they used to burn down your shed after you gave them your car to not burn down your shed. You are just giving Russia the time to build up infrastructure and equipment to go at you again.
foxyv··on Zelensky says Russia has widened attacks to hit Ukraine's data centres
Getting Ukraine to cede territory is going to be an uphill battle because the last time they did it, our security guarantees meant jack squat. Also Russia is never going to let them join NATO because they fully intend on taking the rest of Ukraine. The only way to keep them out of NATO is to continue the war with them.

So, if Ukraine cedes the territory, they have just legitimized the Russian claim to that territory while getting nothing in return. This is why talks have always fallen through up to this point. Russia wants Ukraine, Ukraine does not want to be Russian. There is no middle ground.

foxyv··on Apple Wallet driver's licenses coming to three new states soon
I thought the wallet was stored locally and encrypted using a datakey from the secure enclave? Alongside all the payment tokens and CC numbers.
foxyv··on Apple Wallet driver's licenses coming to three new states soon
They should also do this for insurance cards. Not needing 5g signal for that would be great. Geico lets me download mine but it's pretty klunky.
foxyv··on US halts flights at busy East Coast airports, says fiber line cut
What gets me is the Counselor was like "Why didn't he just build a big bonfire" as if a big fire would be a better idea.
foxyv··on Chopping up books when they're physically too big
I wish I had thought of this with my Physics textbook. I had to re-bind it once anyways when I left it on the top of my car. I could have just cut it up then.
foxyv··on Non-alcoholic beer may actually contain alcohol
There are different kinds of NA beer. Some are 100% alcohol free. Some are <0.5% which is sometimes called "Near Beer." Then you have small beers up to 2%.

In the case of near beers you usually get more alcohol from eating bread or other fermented products. Small beers can be a little intoxicating if you drink 4x as much as a normal beer. Usually they are so expensive they are pretty much a treat.

foxyv··on Meet the Antinatalists, Who Hope Humans Go Extinct
You may want to take into account that they may have already considered these things. Although you and I do not agree with them, there is a long history of this philosophy and that their arguments are sound even if they are not necessarily valid.

In fact, you may agree with some of their points. For instance, if a fetus is destined to live a short and painful life, suffocating in it's own bodily waste products upon birth due to a congenital abnormality, you may agree that it should be aborted.

A lot of these philosophical positions are just an excuse to question some of our deepest held beliefs and reveal our own prejudices and misconceptions. Some people think that giving birth to a child is a gift and the child should be indebted to the parents for the rest of their lives for that gift. Anti-natalism shines a cold light of truth on this misconception.

foxyv··on Ubisoft's FOR HONOR will block SteamOS / Linux players starting September 10
Naw, I just haven't played either company's games for so long my brain mixed up the two. Sorry
foxyv··on Ubisoft's FOR HONOR will block SteamOS / Linux players starting September 10
Woops, wrong bad gaming company. Derp.
foxyv··on Apple may change 'Lake Ontario' to 'Lake America' soon after talk with Trump
This is just a localization change. If you set your country to Canada it turns right back. Every country has it's own names for hundreds of geographical features.

Meanwhile, US leaders are planning to bomb oil infrastructure in Iran that exports 90% of their oil in Kharg. Also, free trade with Canada has been sabotaged by people who are actively manipulating the stock market and selling insider trading secrets for $200,000/month through social media.

foxyv··on The Tariff Cost: analysis of the costs to Americans from new tariffs on Canada
Yup! Just like a game of chicken that goes a little too far.
foxyv··on The Tariff Cost: analysis of the costs to Americans from new tariffs on Canada
I think the idea is that tariffs cut both ways. They increase prices for foreign goods as well as reduce demand for imports causing job losses in the exporting country. The original tariffs increase prices and the retaliatory tariffs reduce demand for American products causing job loss.
foxyv··on Apple introduces M6 and M5 Ultra
Windows is definitely guilty of slowly getting worse performance wise. Requiring faster and faster hardware and more RAM just to keep the OS running.
foxyv··on AI is hitting entry-level jobs hardest, Stanford study finds
It took me about 2 years out of college to get a job in my field. This was back in 2014-2015. This is just kind of how it goes nowadays. The trick is to make sure you don't stop learning while you are job hunting. I pretended that I would never get a job and my only hope was to build my own products so I spent my time learning how to build my own stuff and maybe sell it. Meanwhile, my resume started having more and more skills.

Things are changing, so I can't make any guarantees. But don't get too discouraged. Pay attention to what is in demand like Python, PySpark, and PyTorch. Make sure that the next time it rains soup your son has a bucket.

foxyv··on Apple introduces M6 and M5 Ultra
I have never owned an Apple product that didn't slowly get worse over time. After a couple iPads and MacBooks, I'm almost certain they are intentionally updating their operating system to slow down older products. Even worse is the removal of access to certain applications for older hardware in the name of security or compatibility.

Meanwhile my Linux laptop continues to get faster every year as the operating system improves with performance updates and bugfixes.

foxyv··on Naegleria Fowleri
There was recently a case of this in Louisiana. The 4th since 1937. It's exceedingly rare.

foxyv··on 'Unending Nightmare': LA Family Details 120 Days in ICE Detention in Texas
So we're going back to the internment camps? When I was a kid visiting the museum of tolerance, my thought was "Thank god I live in America where this won't happen." Guess I was wrong. How can any decent person continue to support this?
foxyv··on Flock-style scanners now track WiFi/Bluetooth identity from devices in your car
Long distance RFID readers are currently used mostly for warehouse inventory tracking. Nowadays you can steer antennas using phased arrays like they use in 5G.

Although, as I understand it, Flock itself is mostly just looking for Bluetooth, BTLE, TPMS Sensors, and Wifi devices.

foxyv··on I'll Never Get Y'all to Read the Bible, Will I?
I would recommend getting an annotated version. It helps to understand what the heck is going on. Half the time you are reading idioms that were translated from Hebrew or Greek to Latin and then to English that make zero sense in English. The annotations are very enlightening.

My favorite is the Skeptic's Annotated Bible:

foxyv··on Trump sends the US Navy back to the steam age
Guess they won't be able to launch UAVs then. The steam catapults weren't compatible with lighter airframes.
foxyv··on Flock-style scanners now track WiFi/Bluetooth identity from devices in your car
You can read a passive RFID from about 30 meters with the right equipment.
foxyv··on Mars Bar from 1991 found – and it's 20g bigger than today's
I love making my own sub rolls for sandwiches. They last a week on the counter so I can make them on the weekend and store them in the fridge then toast them in the oven. Subway used to be cheap but they jacked those prices up to the moon lately. Their prices have doubled in the last 10 years. Their produce is always soggy and wilted anyways.

Economists keep saying we are under 3.5% inflation which makes no sense. Prices in stores are doubling in 10 years which is more like a 7-8% inflation rate. Maybe it's local to me?

foxyv··on Mars Bar from 1991 found – and it's 20g bigger than today's
I'm thinking more along the lines with high rent/high cost of living locations like Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Austin. Where the only affordable places are rooms in single family housing. Places where affordable housing is illegal or severely restricted.
foxyv··on Children who grow up with high economic connectedness earn more
I think a huge part of success comes from stopping and spending some time in self reflection occasionally. It's really easy to get stuck on autopilot and not re-evaluate things. Especially when you are young. Stopping for a bit and spending time actually thinking instead of bashing my head against a wall has been my best strategy to date.
foxyv··on How I use LLMs to learn complex topics
I'm doing something like this for AES ciphers. I pretty much asked Cursor to write a step by step guide to the math behind everything with annotations. Then when I run into something I don't understand I can ask questions and have it elaborate. It's honestly kind of a fun way to learn about something.
foxyv··on Mars Bar from 1991 found – and it's 20g bigger than today's
Blessed is the person who decided to exclude recipes from copyright law. They will forever hold a place in my heart.

If you compare the cost of renting a room in a house, and renting an apartment it is a little easier to figure out. Usually room rentals will charge extra for kitchen access or just ban it outright.
