fourseventy··on Java 27
Because unless you are the only person maintaining your codebase other people in your organization will start using the cool new syntax sugar and optional functionality. So you will be forced to deal with it as it starts showing up in your codebase.
fourseventy··on Omarchy: 1Password and 37signals become Distinguished Corporate Patrons
Why are people complaining about money going into FOSS?
fourseventy··on AWS Acquires DuckLabs
There is no way the price tag is less than tens of millions right?
fourseventy··on Field measurements of neighborhood-scale air temperature impacts of data centers
You are posting on a website that is hosted in a data center right now. You use data centers at your job to send email, share documents, run software. When you go home and watch netflix, that video is streamed to you from a data center. All of the internet, your phone, and modern digital entertainment and life is run through data centers. My guess is that you don't seriously want to turn all of that off because 'reasons'.
fourseventy··on Ask HN: GitHub employees what's going on? Why?
Github is owned by Microsoft, its not like its some boostrapped startup who has a closet of servers that are melting.
fourseventy··on Why does Opus 5 feel worse to work with?
Opus 5 is so wordy, it doesn't feel any better than 4.8 at coding (at least not for what I use it for), I hopped over to Grok4.6 after the announcement the other day and its been pretty good so far. It also is very fast.
fourseventy··on Grok 4.6
the "no moat" stuff is dumb. There are only like 4 companies in the world that have cutting edge LLMs so there is definitely a moat.
fourseventy··on U.S. used 'virtually all' of its long-range precision missiles during Iran war
Its all drones and one F-15, its not like dozens of F-22s or F-35 are being shot out of the sky
fourseventy··on All of Winona Police Department's Flock cameras cut down and stolen
If you own a $20,000 car and I steal it, is your loss not $20k? (excluding depreciation etc)
fourseventy··on Prevent cognitive debt by manually retyping LLM-generated code
Lets prevent cognitive debt by manually retyping the assembly that is generated by our compilers...
fourseventy··on Superlogical
People are only allowed to take funding from investors whose politics align with yours?
fourseventy··on Claude Opus 5
A counterexample proves that the conjecture is false, not sure what you are talking about. And we can play word games all day about what counts as a "new brilliant scientific idea" but the fact is that no human had been able to solve it.
fourseventy··on So, you want to make a game engine (2023)
Speak for yourself dude. I programmed a game engine in Java in 2011 right after I graduated college, and it powers a game that I launched on Steam in 2015. https://github.com/FourSeventy/sylver_engine
fourseventy··on Did they ghost you?
I was recently interviewing candidates for a senior software engineer in Boston. I did about 20 interviews and only got 1 follow up/thank you email. I didn't send rejection emails to candidates that didn't send a follow up.
fourseventy··on Claude Opus 5
Like two days ago Claude solved a century old math conjecture
fourseventy··on Patreon laying off 20% of staff
1.) The c-suite is like 6 people, reducing their salary isn't going to make much of a dent.

2.) The c-suite are compensated at market rate the same as anyone else. If the CTO at Patreon is making 400k/yr you can't just cut his salary to 200k, he will leave and take a job somewhere else.

fourseventy··on Patreon laying off 20% of staff
Well if the company goes out of business because its not making enough profit then all product launches will cease.
fourseventy··on Patreon laying off 20% of staff
I watched this dudes youtube channel where he makes music for years before I ever knew he was the CEO of pateron. It was a bit of a wtf moment when I found out.
fourseventy··on C++20 Improved the For-Loop Syntax
Just what C++ needs, more bloat lol.
fourseventy··on My thoughts on the Bun Rust rewrite
Are you serious? If I told you to your face "you are shitty at your job" you don't see that as a personal attack?
fourseventy··on My thoughts on the Bun Rust rewrite
So is this guy going to dress down any project that decides to move off of Zig? If Mitchell Hashimoto decides to move Ghostty off of Zig to C or Rust will we get a scathing blog post about that too?
fourseventy··on Resetting Xbox
Tell me you know nothing about business without telling me you know nothing about business.
fourseventy··on Looking Ahead to Postgres 19
The Async I/O in PG18 is what got me to jump from 16
fourseventy··on Professor denounces mass AI fraud on an exam at Brown
"Take home closed book" exam is asking for mass cheating. It was probably happening way before AI too. AI is just an excuse now.
fourseventy··on Reid Hoffman says SpaceX 'not an AI company', xAI 'complete train wreck'
Short it then
fourseventy··on Reid Hoffman says SpaceX 'not an AI company', xAI 'complete train wreck'
ridiculous comparison
fourseventy··on Noam Shazeer Joins OpenAI
I think the 'models have no moat' thing is overblown. Only like 3-4 companies in the entire world have cutting edge models, that means there is some kind of moat...
fourseventy··on Gov.uk has replaced Stripe with Dutch provider Adyen
Stripes revenue is ~$20B seems pretty big to me...
fourseventy··on The Public Should Own Half of the Big A.I. Companies
No its full blown communist.
fourseventy··on The Public Should Own Half of the Big A.I. Companies
This isn't about income tax or capital gains tax, it's about the government seizing half of a privately owned company.
