foulmouthboy··on [dead]
If you buy just about anything on the list, it immediately makes many of the rest of the things on the list "Nice to have". For example, if I buy an iPad 2, the Nook and the Macbook Air immediately become a little less desirable or unnecessary. And obviously, if I buy one of the smart phones, the other two smart phones become almost useless to me.

Well done!

foulmouthboy··on How Good is Spotify for Indie Musicians? (Not Good)
Why can't you do both?

The people who are finding your sell pressed CDs would probably buy it whether it was on Spotify or not. If those initial buyers then wanted to share the music with somebody else, I would think Spotify would be a MUCH preferred option compared to ripping the CD and sharing it on a torrent site.

As an indie musician, your goal shouldn't be to milk as much money as you can from your 200 person fanbase, right? It should be to double and triple that fanbase. Self pressed CDs seems to be one of the slower, more painful ways of doing that.

foulmouthboy··on How Good is Spotify for Indie Musicians? (Not Good)
Ridiculously short sighted analysis. So you sell 143 CDs and make your thousand bucks. Good for you. End of the road. Then you sell another 155 CDs on CD Baby. Make another thousand bucks. Yep. End of the road.

In the time that it's taken to sell 298 CDs, and effectively reach 300 people, you're telling me you wouldn't (for free) make the music available to thousands of users and then just share the hell out of it? How much music gets streamed by Spotify users just looking to try a track out? That too counts as revenue.

If it were me, I'd distribute across as many channels as quickly as possible and hope that I catch on as opposed to "burning out" each channel one by one in the most painfully slow marketing campaign ever.

foulmouthboy··on Google + will not dethrone Facebook because my mom doesn’t use it
I'd be more surprised if she was using MySpace or Friendster.
foulmouthboy··on Gamification of the workplace
This is getting ridiculous. The idea of bonuses, rewards for completing tasks, the earning of newer impressive titles, gifts for accomplishing things coworkers couldn't. It's not the gamefication of work. It's just work.
foulmouthboy··on Google Premium Analytics Pricing Revealed: $150,000 A YEAR
The Omniture pricing is where you start. Then they charge additional to raise your server call limit, additional for data correlation, additional for data warehousing. Omniture has a great product, but to think that an enterprise gets away with $100k is laughable. I've had clients in 7 figures easy.

If you're a startup, the only bonus you're really getting with premium Google Analytics is SLA, which most startups can do without. Stick with free.

foulmouthboy··on What Netflix Could Have Said This Week
Oh I'm sure I could rattle off at least a hundred or so names of products and services that have no relationship to their relative products, are challenging to spell (assuming you hadn't heard of them before) and sound somewhat similar to other services.
foulmouthboy··on What Netflix Could Have Said This Week
The whole point of the original email was to recognize that their pricing changes made them seem out of touch. What's so bad about a CEO apologizing to his customer base? Also, I'll always take product name critiques with a grain of salt. I remember when people were complaining about how awkward MacBook Pro sounded. Don't even get me started on "iPod". If the service is good, then people will use the name and avoid the confusion that's been happening with the soon-to-be previous Netflix configuration.
foulmouthboy··on The day Apple won the Flash fight
It's not "giving tools that people are willing to buy", it's "selling tools that are profitable". iPhone or not, if there wasn't a business reason to support HTML5, I'm positive Adobe would've been perfectly content being the proprietary standard for digital media.
foulmouthboy··on Building a Better Groupon
The truth is that people who use Groupon-type deals are the last kind of customer your business wants.

I'd really like to see a study that proves this, because unless this is true then the entire article is bunk. Almost every form of advertising is based on some sort of incentive, and the concept of "mention this ad" to gain a benefit is not new. From the perspective of a small business owner, Groupon not only makes people aware of your restaurant/store/whatever, but also gets people in the door, which is something traditional advertising doesn't do.

I would postulate that just because they're coupon chasers doesn't make them bad customers. It just gives the business owner more reason to provide exceptional service and get people to come back even without an Groupon.

foulmouthboy··on Visualization: Movies Are Getting Worse
Then I'm not understanding the definition of "polarizing". By my thinking, a polarizing movie would have distinctly good ratings to go alongside distinctly bad ratings, i.e. Twilight is not polarizing if everybody agrees it is bad.
foulmouthboy··on Visualization: Movies Are Getting Worse
Why would extremely polarizing movies be an indicator that movies are getting worse? If anything, more polarization would seem to mean that critics are finding movies more difficult to come to consensus on, which could mean that movies are getting MORE complex and nuanced in their storytelling, which in tern could be taken to mean that movies are getting BETTER.
foulmouthboy··on Did 99% Of Our Industry Just Become Criminals
Well, back to the drawing board, cause the scenario I was hoping they'd fix is highway robbery.
foulmouthboy··on Did 99% Of Our Industry Just Become Criminals
Just reading what's been quoted in the blog post, this makes it so that an upsell purchase is a distinctly different transaction from a previously completed purchase.

What was possible before: 1. Visitor enters billing information and makes a purchase 2. Visitor is shown an upsell page 3. Visitor clicks a link on the upsell page 4. The item that was clicked is automatically added to the previously completed purchase

Now, step 4 isn't possible. A retailer must make it clear (by virtue of asking for billing info again) that there is a new purchase that's about to happen.

foulmouthboy··on Your career is a game of Dungeons & Dragons, not Monopoly
Everything's a primitive RPG if you're willing to pretend hard enough.
foulmouthboy··on Ask HN: How would you monetize icantfindmyphone.com?
Sponsorship. Localized.

You know the person's area code. Make the assumption that they live somewhere near there and sell local ads.

I wouldn't put the advertising in the voice message itself. Most users are just as likely to ignore the call once they get the phone. After the number has been submitted though, the ad can display on the website's thank you page.

"Now that we've helped you, return a kind act and consider one of these fine products from one of our sponsors."

foulmouthboy··on The Mac App Store, it'a awesome, and you guys are missing why.
Video game systems have obviously worked within models like this (software specific to system) for decades to varying levels of success. Microsoft/Sony/Nintendo have also obviously worked in this exact model (download software for dedicated systems) for years.

As a proof of concept, it's already been done and there is nothing to suggest that it wouldn't work for Apple and in verticals outside of gaming.

foulmouthboy··on Android is now the most popular OS for people aquiring a new smartphone
Are people downvoting this because of the last sentence? I think it's a perfectly reasonable point.

When your OS is only available on one product and one carrier, it's not an apples to apples comparison and analysts should try a little harder to prove if the trends really indicate popularity or just availability.

foulmouthboy··on How a programmer reads a resume
This is funny and all, but any HR department worth its salt would know what it takes to get a job at its respective company. At the very very least, most HR departments these days will take a glance at Facebook.
foulmouthboy··on Ask HN: Why does Google hate us?
If your site is being properly found by real people with Google, then does it matter if the search results page doesn't show the .com yet? My assumption is that anybody who wants to share your URL with somebody will do it after they've arrived at your page (as opposed to writing down the URL displayed on the SERP). The big issue with switching domains is making sure your pages can still be found, which it sounds like they are.
foulmouthboy··on Foreign Languages Fade in Class — Except Chinese
I am very discouraged by how dismissive most of the comments are in regards to learning another language regardless of what it is. I thought this was a group of HACKERS. Understanding another language, especially one as challenging as Mandarin is beneficial education to learning the capabilities, strengths and structures of communication.

To me, the "English is enough", is totally akin to fanboy mentalities surrounding technology. I supposed you've only bothered to learn C or Java and are completely indifferent to even bothering with any other language. Obviously, this is an extremely limited view.

Additionally, exposure to another language provides exposure to other cultures. In this day and age of internationalization, exposure to a variety of cultures beyond what's within walking distance is extremely important.

I know a lot of HNers are dismissive of formal education in general, and maybe knowing Chinese isn't directly applicable to most, but come on. We need to teach our kids early on that it's OK to learn for the sake of learning

foulmouthboy··on Pics from 8th graders successful 100k foot high flight, $200 ballon
This is great and all, but I'm not sure how they managed to get a cell phone with GPS, a digital camera and an iPad all for under $200.
foulmouthboy··on How to kill a company's morale in one easy memo
Sure. Why not?

The morale of the company was supposedly "killed" after that email and the evidence used was a drop in stock price, but a little investigation shows that the stock price is actually fine. Therefore, any accusation that the CEO is ineffective appears to be false and deserves to be defended against.

foulmouthboy··on Can you be too incompetent to understand just how incompetent you are?
You're taking it too literally.
foulmouthboy··on Nikola Tesla's FBI file
Is there a summary of the interesting bits anywhere? Scribd is a little wonky for me and the scan is very difficult to read.
foulmouthboy··on The weirdest soccer match and game theory
The same sort of thing happens regularly in any sport where any sort of external outcome is dependent on individual games. The best example is any league that relies on final standings to determine the next season's draft order. When the team with the worst record gets to pick first in the following year's draft, it begins to make little sense for teams close to the bottom of the standings to win games at all.
foulmouthboy··on Win a soccer game by more than five points and you lose
This league would be better off modifying the rules so that every team finishes undefeated by default.
foulmouthboy··on Win a soccer game by more than five points and you lose
That's assuming it's sudden death. It sounds like the rule goes into effect at the end of regulation. That would make it so that the team that goes up by six would be encouraged to then take the ball back and score on themselves to make the score 6-1 and therefore keep the victory.
