fotta··on Twitter to employees: all office buildings closed, badge access suspended
Aww man. Glad I grabbed a screenshot before it got rotated.
fotta··on Twitter to employees: all office buildings closed, badge access suspended
The TLS cert expires on December 12.
fotta··on Circadian lighting with Home Assistant: Like f.lux, but for your house
I wish I could adjust the curve though. It's still too white in the evenings for me.
fotta··on The case litigating Andy Warhol’s use of a photograph of Prince
This still has a paywall, fyi
fotta··on Firefox Private Browsing mode upgrade
I came here looking to see if this was fixed too. This isn’t really a “bug” per se as the text on the Private Window says it does this. But I agree with you it’s the biggest issue with Private Windows. I always check if I have one open now if I want to use one and have started using Safari Private Windows more now because each one is isolated.
fotta··on Bringing passkeys to Android and Chrome
Google's auth is getting increasingly frustrating. Recently when I logged in with TOTP 2FA, I had to also open up YouTube on another device and click approve. What's the point of 2FA if they're just going to ignore it?
fotta··on macOS keeps a huge wallpapers cache
At least since Yosemite. I used it a lot in college when I was using a 128gb MacBook.
fotta··on Dear Chess World
I'd guess it's some sort of legal litigation.
fotta··on Github.com Down Again?
I wonder if the current US West Coast heatwave is causing some shared cloud infrastructure to go down.
fotta··on Github.com Down Again?
there is no outage in Github Sing Se
fotta··on Could long Covid be linked to herpes viruses? Early data offer a hint
My cold sores will break out after any sort of physical stress (excluding exercise). Ironically I get them most often after heat exhaustion.
fotta··on Why there's no 'Dijon' in Dijon mustard
I’m seeing a lot of Dijon mustard content in a very short time frame recently. Business Insider released a YouTube video a few weeks ago, Eater had their own this week, and now this BBC article. That’s at least more than I would expect for a condiment. Anyone know why? Is this just a case of Baader-Meinhof?
fotta··on PayPal phishing scam uses invoices sent via PayPal
I got one of these emails a few weeks ago. It looked real and passed Gmail's filters but when I logged into my account separately there were no invoices. I had never gotten an invoice from PayPal before so it smelled fishy. Reported it to phishing@.
fotta··on Amazon admits giving police Ring camera footage without consent
In your situation, the police should be asking YOU not Amazon for the footage.

I don’t have a problem with turning over footage, but not without my consent. I want to be able to decide when to give it to police.

fotta··on “Google” programmers. How one idiot hired a couple more idiots
Sometimes I call this the “tyranny of choice”, tyranny is probably the wrong word but it sounds nice.

It’s pervasive in lots of aspects of my life beyond programming, where I get anxious having to make decisions. I will drag my feet to have to make a final decision, even if it’s a restaurant choice. I’d much rather have the obvious right choice in my face than have to pick between multiple good choices.

I face this same anxiety when staring at a blank source file too.

(Yes, I’m working on finding a therapist, but even picking one gives me the same anxiety)

fotta··on The brain has a ‘low-power mode’ that blunts our senses
I get reactive hypoglycemia sometimes and when my blood sugar levels start dropping my vision starts blurring and I can’t focus on anything. Eating something to bring my blood sugar back resolves it. This study was about longer term deficits but I wonder if it’s the same mechanism I experience in short bursts.
fotta··on Ask HN: Has Cloudflare blocked your domain without explaining what's going on?
I picked Porkbun from other threads on this topic. You can search "registrar" on hn.algolia to see yourself, but tbh I never really found a single _consensus_ opinion.
fotta··on Why Google is so unbearable, and how to fix it
ha! nice, thanks for that
fotta··on Why Google is so unbearable, and how to fix it
yep, Google makes it hard to copy the original link too which is annoying
fotta··on Why Google is so unbearable, and how to fix it
but that's not a .edu site though

e: ah it looks like it is a .edu that redirects to a .org

fotta··on CNN+ streaming service is shutting down a month after launching
ESPN+ is so annoying. It used to be that you could watch anything streaming but not broadcast on cable with a cable login, but they moved most of that content to ESPN+. For example in the early Australian Open rounds you could watch matches on smaller courts with a cable login, but now you have to pay for ESPN+ for this even if you have a cable login.
fotta··on LibreWolf – A fork of Firefox, focused on privacy, security and freedom
DRM is opt-in on Librewolf. It's in the pref pane.
fotta··on Firefox removed Yandex search option
> Does a search engine need an extension to support being used for omnibox search? It might.

No, IIRC it just needs to have an appropriate OpenSearch xml file to have support for omnibox. I use a third-party engine that isn't bundled in FF and it works fine in omnibox.

fotta··on CEO demanded all employees return full-time to the office. Only half showed up
Isn’t that what video calls are for? Whenever I want to talk to someone and not leave a paper trail I get on a call.
fotta··on NY energy grid: Real-time dashboard
California’s ISO has a similar dashboard: https://www.caiso.com/TodaysOutlook/Pages/default.aspx
fotta··on Toll signs on 101 report your transponder setting
You can also add your license plate number to your Fastrak account so if you don't have the transponder in your car it'll just charge back to your account via the plate. Obviously doesn't work if you want to carpool.
fotta··on Toll signs on 101 report your transponder setting
I have a gumstick Flex from 2019 and it beeps.
fotta··on AWS's us-east-1 region is experiencing issues
Somehow AWS managed to make their new status page more opaque than the old one. It's like they want you to scroll through their gigantic list so they can fix the issue before you find the right line.
fotta··on Apple and Major League Baseball to Offer “Friday Night Baseball”
Ah thanks for the clarification
fotta··on Apple announces 27-inch 5K Studio Display
Yep. The LG 5Ks are the same way too. Moreover, if you have an Intel MacBook Pro you have to use ports on opposite sides of the laptop if you have 2 displays. You can’t plug them in on the same side.
