fotta··on Is There Any Safe Place to Complain About Work Online?
There’s Blind. It tends to be toxic but I’ve also seen actually helpful advice for my company’s board. This article is really just saying don’t talk shit on Slack which seems like basic common sense.

I’d add that if you’re going to talk shit online, don’t use a device with your company’s MDM on it.

fotta··on Low Cost CO2 Sensors Comparison: Photo-Acoustic vs. NDIR
I think that really depends on the environment it’s deployed in. I used to live in a poorly ventilated former warehouse apartment with a mini split for HVAC and at night my levels were around 700. I live in a much better ventilated apartment now and it’s made a noticeable difference in QoL.
fotta··on Low Cost CO2 Sensors Comparison: Photo-Acoustic vs. NDIR
I have an SCD30 which is a dual-channel NDIR sensor and am pretty happy with it. Once a year I’ll take it outside to recalibrate it and it’s never drifted more than a few ppm. I make sure to turn off the auto-calibration and manually calibrate it because auto-calibration can lead to weird behavior if you don’t know what it’s doing (it re-baselines the lowest observed ppm in a time window as 400ppm).

fotta··on Patagonia gave its staff 3 days to decide to relocate or quit
> The company hopes to bring staff together at the hubs at least once every six weeks for in-person training, company gatherings, or "Activism Hours".

For 90 people it can’t be that expensive for a company of Patagonia’s size to expense travel every 6-8 weeks.

With REI’s union busting efforts it seems that two of the biggest outdoor companies I respected for their values have gone by the wayside. I’ll be buying more from the cottage makers going forward.

fotta··on Southwest flight came within 400 feet of crashing into the ocean
per https://avherald.com/h?article=519ee0ab&opt=0

> What happened in these 16 seconds is described in an internal memo circulating in Southwest Airlines stating, that during the go around due to weather conditions the first officer, pilot flying, inadvertently pushed the control column forward while monitoring the power settings causing the aircraft to descend to about 400 feet MSL before the aircraft started climbing again.

fotta··on Apple's On-Device and Server Foundation Models
Yeah that is true, but I suspect that most publishers that want their content to appear in search but not used for model training will not have blocked Applebot to date (hence the original commenter's argument)
fotta··on Apple's On-Device and Server Foundation Models
> There is no AppleBot-Extended. And if you blocked it in the past it remains blocked.

You said there is no Applebot-Extended. The link says otherwise.

From your own link:

> Controlling data usage

> In addition to following all robots.txt rules and directives, Apple has a secondary user agent, Applebot-Extended, that gives web publishers additional controls over how their website content can be used by Apple.

> With Applebot-Extended, web publishers can choose to opt out of their website content being used to train Apple’s foundation models powering generative AI features across Apple products, including Apple Intelligence, Services, and Developer Tools.

fotta··on Ask HN: What would you spend your time working on if you didn't need money?
My life goal is to make enough money in tech to semi-retire around 40 and teach CS to underprivileged kids.
fotta··on As private equity dominates wheelchair market, users wait months for repairs
This is a function of CMS/Medicare paying for a new wheelchair every 5 years. Functionally my wheelchairs have lasted longer. I still use my 8 year old chair with thousands of miles on it as a backup chair when I travel.
fotta··on What I wish I knew about ESPP and RSUs sooner
> Be conscious of what is going on with sell to cover on RSUs if you go that route, especially shortly after you joined a company or vesting a new grant these will also be sold at short term gains (if the stock went up), also going towards you taxable income. This is an easy way to end up with a surprise monster tax bill.

I don’t think this is true? My understanding, from my company which mandates sell to cover on vest, is that the cost basis is the price on the day of vest. The shares that are sold to cover are sold at the same price so there are no gains or losses and the amount that is sold is (in theory, if you’ve set it up this way) equal to your marginal tax rate so you end up paying around the correct amount to not have a huge tax bill.

If you set your sell to cover % very low, then yes you will have a large tax bill because the vest value is treated as ordinary income and taxed at that rate. I do know some people at my company that intentionally set it to the lowest possible % and invest the difference while paying quarterly estimated tax payments, but it’s too much of a hassle for me personally.

fotta··on Pilot of Boeing flight says he lost control after instrument failure
I had a Chrysler Pacifica go into limp mode several times due to issues in a CAN bus connector sending bad ECM data. It was very intermittent so service couldn't do anything. Eventually someone in an owner's forum figured it out so I was able to swap out the $5 connector.

fotta··on Which Airlines Are Not Flying the Boeing 737 Max?
I don’t know if it’s a difference between the models or just configuration but I had 2 SWA flights last week. The first was in a MAX with SWA’s newer configuration and seats with very short tray tables. The second flight was on a 738 that had the older leather seats and much deeper tray table. Again unsure if it’s just that the 738 is incompatible with the new seats or they just haven’t updated it yet.
