forza··on Flash Game Simulates Living on $9/hr.
I seldom hear poor people whine. Pride is usually one of the few things you have left. And don't equate the poor with lazyness and addiction. If you grew up poor you should know better. I do hear people with money complain about car payments, regulation, taxes etc. all the time.

I guess your comment is well-ment in a can-do attitude kind of way, but lacks pragmatism and basic understanding of psychology. It's easy to take away the things that enable you to do something and then blame the individual. In my experience most of the time things considered better actually are and what doesn't kill you messes with your head.

forza··on Color CEO: The Tech Justifies the $41 Million
It's not like this doesn't already exist. I've specifically read about startups doing this from the carrier side several years ago. Whatever it's in service or not is another question. Unfortunately I can't remember the article but there are a lot of startup in this sector e.g. some of these: http://www.iqt.org/technology-portfolio/index-alphabetical.h...

"Please keep in mind, when you're hearing from anybody (including me), you're hearing something which was true X amount of time ago in a situation evolving very rapidly."

Under these conditions I think it's better to just refer people to the good/right sources of information. Everyone wanting there 15 minutes by jumping to conclusions seem to be a big part of the problem.

What does that have to do with the state of welfare? If anything economics is usually used as a justification for not having a very inclusive welfare system.

forza··on 16 year old arrested for DDOS attack on MasterCard in The Hague, The Netherlands
How many packets are a crime? I understand if you want to arrest the RBNs of the world, but unfortunately it's more frequently some random person who are made an example of. I don't think the question is if what these people did was wrong, but if it's reasonable to punish them for it.
forza··on [dead]
A couple of months ago a Swedish newspaper ran a story describing a case of assault, taking place on a ferry from Sweden to Finland[1]. Freely translated with a bit of help from google:

The film shows how the two men drops Christer with punches. Then one of them stomped him five times to the head with full force. The men then disappear into their cabin. After 30 seconds, one of them returns and kicks the unconscious Christer twice in the face. [...] But since the crime took place in Swedish waters, and none of the people involved are Finnish citizens, they were released and returned to Ireland. [...] In Sweden, the matter was taken over by prosecutor Thomas Holst. Despite the surveillance film, and the the two perpetrators being identified, he decided to drop the investigation. - "The people can't be contacted", he says.

But they are known and available in Ireland? - "If we were to try to bring home all the people who committed crimes not serious enough, we would get very busy."

He doesn't see asking them to be extradited as a realistic option. - "We only do that kind of thing when it's serious crimes - like murder."

forza··on I always forget the argument order of the `ln -s` command
In my experience the more variable argument often comes last, presumably for easy reuse. For example...

  $chown user1 file1
  $chown user1 file2

  $ln -s file1 file2
  $ln -s file1 file3
...seems more likely than...

  $chown user1 file1
  $chown user2 file1

  $ln -s file1 file2
  $ln -s file3 file2

forza··on Boycott Amazon? Not doing it.
I can't say I was surprised by Amazons actions, but somewhat by their motivation behind those actions.

I think this should serve as a wake up call for founders who maybe to easily trust a third party with essential parts of their business. As the real question should be what happens when a special interest group pressures Amazon to take down your startup? Do you have external backup?, is your codebase adapted to Amazon? etc.

I think it's in the interest of all service providers to be seen as just only a service provider. There was quite a big discussion about this in Sweden several years ago which made Bahnhof start the "integrity" initiative[1]. This is, among other things, why Wikileaks have been hosted in Sweden for a long time.

forza··on List of facilities 'vital to US security' leaked
"This is a bad thing", "This one is a bad thing", "This is a bad thing".

I don't think that kind of reasoning is the best way to question peoples ability to think rationally.

There might be "bad things" in these leaks, but that the natural gas industry is important to Qatar and the US exports to Qatar is just as far from a secret there is. Even someone totally ignorant on Qatar as a country could find this out on wikipedia.

  Economy of Qatar [1]:
Export goods > Liquefied Natural Gas
Import goods > Machinery and Transport Equipment
Main import partners > United States 13.3%
Not even the facilities[2] mentioned nor the people involved[3] are even close to secret. Just because something has a "SECRET" label and is posted from an embassy doesn't mean it's damaging or that information that could be damaging shouldn't be published[4]. To me it's the people who keep repeating that everything is bad regardless of the actual content, that make it close to impossible to have a critical debate on the leaks.

Qatar also has much larger security problems then "random unhappy people". For example to quote the congressional research report on Qatar[5]: "On March 19, 2005, an Egyptian national carried out a car bomb attack at a theater popular with Western expatriates on the outskirts of the capital city of Doha. [...] The suicide bomber was an engineer employed at Qatar Petroleum"

forza··on 200 Countries, 200 Years, 4 Minutes
In the documentary Swedish national television made about him, he says this regarding that TED video:

"If I count the number of minutes I've been teaching, this video teaches more than anything I've done in my life. All the articles, books, courses... None of it can compare with this one video. That's a humbling experience."

forza··on Julian Assange's Barrister speaks out
"I am flagging any new posts I see"

I agree with you that this particular story is somewhat inappropriate. The Swedish prosecution obviously have done a terrible job, but "who did what and when" is pure gossip.

On the other hand this is the one of the biggest technology related stories of the year. Of the Swedish cables only 1% have been released publicly and newspapers have been running "front page" stories about the leaks for a week [1]. A majority of which is about the actual content of the leaks and not meta. Swedish national television also ran a program about the content of the leaks earlier tonight. I would imagine it's the same in many other countries. In short: This story is huge.

What I don't get is why you have to post so many comments on a subject you don't like or are interested in. You've been here long enough to know that this is a community driven site and the posting guidelines are very loose. Sometimes events like this creates a snowballing of votes. You yourself posted a political story about the TSA just weeks ago for instance. I personally not very interested or affected by the whole TSA deal. But guess what, I just ignore those stories and read the other ones instead. Because if everyone would start commenting on stories they didn't like or didn't feel was suited for HN, almost every story would feature that kind of complaint.

So if you feel it's truly inappropriate for HN then flag it. If you disagree, are not interested or feel you have read to many similar stories; then just ignore it and maybe someone will return the favor when something you are interested in goes into a vote "snowball".

forza··on With Domain Name Seizures Increasing, It's Time For A Decentralized DNS System
That's it not how things tend to work out in my experience. Resources are almost never limited in the way you describe. Even if they are you would have to know the same people would be doing something better, which most of the time you don't. You're far more likely to transition into something useful when people are actually engaged. At least whatever you're doing can be proven wrong by it not working. If you're only complaining, you can be right forever.

To me entrepreneurship, startups, community open source software etc. is all about trying new things. Sadly I far too rarely get the feeling that people share this view in forums like this one. Even though the barrier to entry of these types of project are so low, people still rather be "right" than join in or start their own.

Politics is very different from these types of projects, in that the amount of responsibility is far greater. I don't think it's a valid comparison.
