forsaken··on Introducing Stud (open source secure gateway)
Is this the same idea as stunnel, but meant to scale to more connections?
forsaken··on You have exactly three passwords, don't you?
I use 3 passwords: One for my email, one for my computer's login, and one for my password managers master password.
forsaken··on Ask HN: How much recurring income do you generate, and from what?
I'd be curious to hear more about how this works. Do you just contract out the work/money stuff to a bank?
forsaken··on Google And Amazon May Have Just Handed Apple The Keys To The Cloud Music Kingdom
It feels like a failure of the internet that I didn't know this existed.
forsaken··on Slicehost accounts will be converted to Rackspace cloud accounts
Yes! I can't believe the control panel has been able to exist in such a shitty state for a long time. I mostly interact with cloudservers through the API these days, but last I remember, the control panel didn't let you set up wildcard DNS, which was a major use-case for me. It actually had javascript validation to disallow it, if you turned off JS, it worked fine.
forsaken··on Collect HN: Aprils Fools
http://urbanairship.com has turned into an 8-bit working game.
forsaken··on Amazon on Cloud Player: we don't need no stinkin' licenses
When they launched this product, it didn't even cross my mind that it would run afoul of anything. People are doing what they want with the data that they own.
forsaken··on Facebook designers' novel approach to the usual name tag problems
Name isn't on both sides. They missed the most important part :)
forsaken··on Why Puppet Should Manage Your Infrastructure
The real point that should be made about Chef and Puppet is that they are so similar, it really doesn't matter which you use. Using one or the other is a much more important choice than which one you use.

I don't know the best way to express this sentiment (feels like there should be a word for it). But really, just use something to automate your infrastructure and your life will be measurably better.

forsaken··on Fabric hits 1.0
Changelog: http://docs.fabfile.org/en/1.0.0/changes/1.0.html

This is a major version, so note the backwards incompatible parts as well:

forsaken··on Anonymous vs. HBGary: the aftermath
The power of anonymous is that you can become part of anonymous at any point.
forsaken··on Documentation is freaking awesome
Agreed. I'm currently running a site over at http://readthedocs.org/ which is meant to be your one-stop shop for Sphinx documentation. It has most of the big python projects on it, and hopefully as sphinx gets more popular, it will attract others as well. For example, we are mirroring the Varnish docs.

We also had a kick-ass designer help us on it, so the site actually looks rather pretty.

I've had a number of people tell me that RTD has been something that has spurred them to write documentation, so I'm really happy with the results thus far.

forsaken··on All PyCon 2011 talks and tutorials announced
Looks like a great lineup. The idea of the extreme talks is a great one. I really like the idea of intense, no bullshit knowledge transfer.

I hope that Djangocon has a similar track this year, assuming it goes as well as I think it will at Pycon.

forsaken··on The secret truth about holiday travel, a letter to the traveling public
Well said. I always cherish things that make me step back from my normal viewpoints, and remind me of how lucky we are.

It's almost certain that anyone reading this site is in the luckiest top 10% of the world, having access to food and internet and enough money to fly as to be bothered by it.

If you have a job that you like (which a lot of us do), and is well paying, that probably narrows you down into the top 5%. Congrats, and sit back and enjoy it.

Happy Holidays!

forsaken··on On Why Open Source Developers run Mac OS X
OS X has plenty of keyboard shortcuts. In general I find them to be much more reliable and consistent than any of the Linux software I have used (ran Ubuntu for ~6 years).

This is full of gross generalizations. I use keyboard shortcuts for everything and know how to tab complete. Everyone I know that uses a mac to dev on does as well.

forsaken··on Aza Raskin Leaving Mozilla
Glad to see startups trying to solve the big annoying problems in society. Banking (Bank Simple) and Health Care are the big ones that I know about, but I'd love to know about more.
forsaken··on Ask HN: How do you cope with loneliness?
Great video in that vein: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k7X7sZzSXYs&feature=playe...
forsaken··on How a programming language documentation ought to look like: clojuredocs
Your bug is my feature.
forsaken··on "Please take this down and write your own book."
Zed is actually really nice in person.
forsaken··on Facebook Acquires Drop.io
You pay people less than 50k/mo?
forsaken··on Ask HN: What do you drink?
Orangina.
forsaken··on Ask HN: How do Hackers kill time when bored on weekend?
Frisbee Golf followed by chatting with fellow hackers on a patio somewhere enjoying the weather.
forsaken··on Django core: Improving our decision-making and committer process
It's useful to have journalism and english lit majors as the BFDL's for a web framework. This is the main reason that the documentation for the framework is so amazing, the owners of the project really care about it.
forsaken··on Django core: Improving our decision-making and committer process
I think he means this: http://docs.djangoproject.com/en/dev/ref/templates/builtins/...
forsaken··on Cuil Goes Down for Good
Bing seems to be doing a pretty good job.

With google's privacy snafu's and other mishaps, I could see them getting upset within 5 years.

forsaken··on Large Problems in Django, Mostly Solved
Blog post with the video and slides for the less-video inclined:

forsaken··on Using jQuery and node.js to scrape html pages in 5 lines
Site appears down. Is node popular enough yet for the "Node doesn't scale" talk? :)
forsaken··on Scotch as a Diet Hack
Last weekend I went out with a flask of Laphroaig (some damn good scotch), and was just sipping that most of the night. I let a bunch of my friends have some, and always came back with some left in the flask. It's a great way to drink really delicious scotch, share with your friends, and drink less.
forsaken··on RVM (Ruby Version Manager) 1.0.0
Virtualenvwrapper gives you per-VENV postactivate hooks that do the same thing.
forsaken··on Colleges Serve the People Who Work There, Not the Students
Cool that you're at KU. I'm living in lawrence -- working at the Journal World on Django stuff :)
