forgotmyoldacc··on 11-week Kellogg’s strike to end after multi-year agreement reached
It's interesting that it's known as the "Kellogg's strike", when the union is "The Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers’ International Union", encompassing a lot more than Kellogg. My guess is that having tobacco workers in the name would cause fewer people to support the strike.
forgotmyoldacc··on Retailers say thefts are at crisis level. The numbers say otherwise
That's not what banality of evil means: "evil acts are not necessarily perpetrated by evil people. Instead, they can simply be the result of bureaucrats dutifully obeying orders".

Practical flying cars were invented in 1950: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aerocar. From what I can tell, there wasn't enough demand.
forgotmyoldacc··on Arc Institute – for curiosity-driven biomedical science and technology
> Arc Institute is partnered with Stanford University, UC Berkeley, and UCSF. This means that our Core Investigators can hold tenured, tenure-track, or adjunct faculty appointments within relevant academic departments at partner universities [...] Additionally, Arc is starting an Affiliate Investigator program to support faculty who are primarily located at Stanford, UC Berkeley, and UCSF, expanding the connection among the four institutions.

If someone is a professor at a top bio-med university, do they really benefit the most from some additional funding, versus funding people from institutions that aren't as well known?

forgotmyoldacc··on Drgn: How the Linux kernel team at Facebook debugs the kernel at scale
I'm disappointed that this irrelevant trivia is the top voted comment on a post about an interesting kernel debugger.
forgotmyoldacc··on Lapce – Fast and Powerful Code Editor written in Rust
The 0.0.1 release crashes on MacOS 12.0.1, would be nice to try it out when its more stable.
forgotmyoldacc··on Facebook exec blames society for COVID misinformation
That misses the point of the OP. Tumblr (as a general social media platform) had incredible amounts of bullying and toxicity. Whether its from the left or right is a moot point.

If you know of a better search engine, please name it. I would love to switch.

Government jobs care about certs a lot, but I don't think most big tech companies do.
forgotmyoldacc··on Google Play permitting alternative billing systems for users in South Korea
Am I reading this correctly?

> We recognize, however, that developers will incur costs to support their billing system, so when a user selects alternative billing, we will reduce the developer’s service fee by 4%. For example, for the vast majority of developers who pay 15% for transactions through Google Play's billing system, their service fee for transactions through the alternate billing system would be 11%.

You have to pay a 11% fee for using someone else's billing system when buying an in-app purchase, if that app was downloaded from the Play store?

forgotmyoldacc··on YouTube takes down independent court livestreams
Genuinely, who cares about the award? I don't think anyone will assume that YouTube abides by free speech just because their CEO won an award no one's ever heard about.
forgotmyoldacc··on Google reorg moves AR, VR, Starline and Area 120 into new ‘Labs’ team
Clay Bavor (the VP mentioned in the article) has made fairly strategic missteps at Google. Project Tango was developed under him (AR sensors on a phone), which got canned. Google then scrambled to play catch up after iPhone announced their structured light AR sensors and ARKit. Daydream VR was supposed to compete against Oculus, but shut down before their technology (imo better than Oculus) made it into production to focus on ARCore. Best of luck to him, hope he's learned from his mistakes.

forgotmyoldacc··on An oral history of Bank Python
Really interesting read. From what's described: Walpole (distributed job runner), Dagger (DAG that recalculates when dependencies change), Barbara (global key value store) and monorepo/fast deployment, its not so different from some big tech companies.
forgotmyoldacc··on High-fidelity remote communication
The image quality will be comparable to a smartphone, judging by the image sensor.
