>That's why there are no more iPhone minis.

I think the minis have a 5.4" screen, meanwhile the SE has a 4.7" screen. I own and prefer an SE.

>I do miss smaller phones, and especially a physical keyboard.

There's these "Clicks" but it's a rubber slip case that has an extended keyboard at the bottom. They're pretty hideous.

I also wanted a physical keyboard, so I waited and found on EBay a Moguls Mobile iPhone 6 Keyboard case, which actually fit the SE after I dremeled-out the camera hole a little! My rose tinted glasses were a bit strong though, because swype is faster than thumb physical qwerty.

I fondly miss when HTC was making innovative devices, when everything was up in the air. I had the G1, a mytouch4g slide, A Samsung Galaxy S relay. All QWERTY slider phones and all amazing experiences.

This reminds me of when the news channels back in 2014 always said "Harmless metadata" as damage control after the Snowden leaks.

Compromised smart devices has been leveraged to hurt people all around the world. Do you think you are immune?

A very low-key life would really help, but the next bored hacker is waiting for the right metadata to be combined and they will leverage it against you.

footlose_3815··on Apple needs a Snow Sequoia
I don’t use pretty much any of the features he listed.

But Sequoia has made some M1 Pros run poorly in my environment. It’s unacceptable the amount of resources it takes to do basic stuff that we got right of 30 years ago.

footlose_3815··on Google will develop Android OS behind closed doors starting next week
Android was really cool for the first couple years, but now it's optimized for brand presence and ad delivery. Every Android device I've purchased for the last 10 years there's been a common expectation of the manufacturer trying to totally capture, record, sell, and leverage my digital experience in ways you never wanted. The only escape was LineageOS, and the technical barrier was plenty hard to make it work just right.

I'm currently on iOS and as many other commenters said, I'm still waiting for a truly open and privacy-respecting OS that we can install on open hardware. It worked for Unix in the computer world.

footlose_3815··on 'Sesame Street' faces uncertain future amid funding cuts and layoffs
Parent comment is either commenting in bad faith to muddy the waters, or doesn't care.

The people they elected commit atrocities, but the propaganda machine is beaming to their heads that they're only hurting against people they don't like, so they feel good about the cruelty. You know, stuff N*zis do.

footlose_3815··on 'Sesame Street' faces uncertain future amid funding cuts and layoffs
Going one-step-higher, do you really believe DOGE is acting in good faith?
footlose_3815··on 'Sesame Street' faces uncertain future amid funding cuts and layoffs
It’s abysmal what these cuts are doing to things that contribute to the greater good.
footlose_3815··on The Burnout Machine
There's a bit of strawman going on where for example when author says "Not taking 12am slacks makes you not a team player". Never in my life have I heard that one.

Also, anecdotal perspective: I've been private company and academia for my whole life, and I've been with good and bad companies over time. If I had a union earlier in life, I think I would have benefited a lot. I don't think a union could make my current situation any better though. (Again, anecdotal)

footlose_3815··on Google to pay $28M to settle claims it favoured white and Asian employees
I would have been happy if it was called "White Allies" and it just focused on being a good sensitive person.
footlose_3815··on Google to pay $28M to settle claims it favoured white and Asian employees
The people who are running the diversity stuff at Google when I was there were very "Eye-for-an-eye".

Some dumb stuff that happened while I was at Google:

* There was a ERG for literally every single race except White people. "Just join one of the others" was what they told me.

* During an onboarding learning exercise because I was merely showing initiative before the rest of the group. "Ok everyone here's my idea". I was tapped on the shoulder by the contractor-teacher-person and asked to move aside and let the group do the very same thing without me.

* Nonwhite employees in my org also got a special mentor who helped them get a leg-up in the company. Some employees were whisked-away from their work responsibilities to go on little field trips with other teams. A few of these people were totally inept technically at their job and I saw them convert into better jobs. It must have been nice.

I'm pretty liberal, but this corpo-liberalism that somehow thinks an eye-for-an-eye to people living in 2025 is insane to me. It might even burn someone so much it changes their politics if they're whimsical.

footlose_3815··on Apple restricts Pebble from being awesome with iPhones
Proprietary, and for the first half of its run, they were insanely expensive. Thin flimsy, always breaking. Short by default. They got nasty and stained quickly.

Over the years, third party cheap ones were risky. May damage port or device.

Has a stupid chip in the connector so people can't easily replicate it like a USB cable.

It was the purest example of proprietary capture in an age where the "The correct universal port" has been around for decades. The massive irony is not missed on me as they used USB mouses and keyboards to engineer a step backwards.

There's things I like about Apple, but I could never bring myself to defend the lightning cable.

footlose_3815··on Apple restricts Pebble from being awesome with iPhones
"Apple knows best for us" is something I've gotten very tired of over the years.

This example might be apples-and-oranges when it comes to the protecting Apple protecting iMessage, but they often rob the user of the choice that other manufacturers offer.

For example: Hotspot. Android hotspot can be perma-on. iPhone hotspot cannot. It will always switch itself off after some time of non-use. When I asked an Apple employee about this (This was not his dept), his understanding was that it was for not-clogging up Wifi at-scale, and for users who forget to turn it off. But what about the users who want it on always, who pay their cell provider for the biggest pacakge? My computer goes to sleep, and the hotspot turns off and I have to go manually switching it back on because "Apple knows better". I want those choices.

footlose_3815··on Computers and Mice – Mister Rogers Neighborhood
Stuff like this brings tears to my eyes. Not so much the mouse subject matter, but how the values brought by this show are now in short supply, and it saddens me to think Rogers' efforts are becoming obsolete to modern people.

A few examples I noticed, but not all in this episode are: Promoting high self-esteem, expressing a love of life, advocating for using your imagination, addressing people with respect, settling for something if it isn't perfect, and belief in the good in humanity.

It's such calorie-dense goodness, and he keeps it consistent and almost candid, even on long camera shots.

footlose_3815··on 400 reasons to not use Microsoft Azure
I'm tired of Microsoft existing.

Working on enterprise or higher level Microsoft is a way to get Grey hair fast. All the way back to Server 2003, we had the infuriating inconsistency of group policy, roaming profiles, DFS drives. Everything is full of errors, you will have a larger IT team as a result to deal with the headaches.

After using Google Workspace for IT, and AWS for infra, I always tell people to stay far away from Microsoft.

Even now, I have a friend who can't honestly deploy intune, because of inconsistencies of the "type" of enrollment, and it being able to execute a winget script as a result. Despite both machines enrolled in intune, the one that was enrolled during OOBE can run the scripts, but the machine enrolled in the OS cannot. Microsoft support has had that ticket for weeks.

footlose_3815··on The post-neoliberalism moment
>regular Americans should be swimming in money

That's not how business works here. Money trickles up and people who worked to make it happen are living paycheck to paycheck. Only the business owners and the shareholders see any prosperity in that equation.

And not to sound too pessimistic, but many local governments would rather take the tax money and give it to Walmart, Cabelas, Sports stadium building rather than paying for stuff like school lunches or better teacher pay.

footlose_3815··on Child safety advocates disrupt Apple developers conference
This is more of "Would someone please think of the children" fallacy in-action.

This was already thoroughly discussed, and the consensus was that privacy needed to prevail. You can either have privacy, or you can open the doors to invasive content-scanning. If you let them scan for one illegal thing, that opens the doors for them to scan for anything they want.

Examples of how this could slope down:

* Oh, you took 30 seconds of video at the Taylor Swift show? Since we let governments scan your private data, we're now compelled to forward your PII to the RIAA.

* You have Metallica mp3s from 2001? Since we let governments scan your private data, we're now compelled to forward your PII to their lawyers.

* EXIF data shows were driving on private property? Since we let governments scan your private data, we're now compelled to forward your PII to the township.

footlose_3815··on Microsoft's official Minesweeper app has ads, pay-to-win, and is hundreds of MBs
Microsoft is the industry leader in enshittification. They will optimize everything to optimal marketing standards. This goes for all the brands they gobbled-up as well. Activision / Blizzard / Bethesda IPs are essentially done for under Microsoft ownership.
footlose_3815··on Apple News+ subscription growth blows away major media sites
When it comes to news, I think NPR and APNews covers most bases. I might be missing out on some news nuance, because I guess I'm not a news junkie.

For your issue with the app, it reminded me of an axe I grind. Whenever possible, I use a bookmark to their website, even if it's mobile.

I think not enough people are challenging themselves to determine "Is the app better than the browser?".

Apps give a privileged and intimate container for that company to control and capture your experience for their brand. Apps let that company run more privileged code on your device than a website could.

I think as a society, we've been conditioned to those app icons over the last 15 years. "There's an app for that". Yeah, but there's a website for almost all of them, too. And I can at-least control how I view it, and if I'm allowed to block ads.

footlose_3815··on Windows 10 wallpaper was physically built and photographed (2015)
It's a really cool project, but the video presentation was just horrible to watch. All I really wanted was to see the fixture in plain form, but they tease you the whole time.

* Blasting loud music * Saturated with bragging, useless testimonials * Blurring-in was more common than actually seeing the work * Cutting away from the work to a human too quickly

Maybe I'm coming off as miserable, but this video was totally unsatisfying to watch.
