fooqux··on U.S. Media Freedom: Perceptions Hit New Low
> In 2025, the year President Donald Trump took office for a second term, perceived media freedom fell 22 points among Democrats and five points among independents, while there was an increase among Republicans (from 83% to 93%). This year, Democrats and independents have fallen by six and seven points, respectively, while there has been little change among Republicans.

I find this interesting as an actual data point on the "alternative facts" issue that's been going on. Republicans are being told everything is fine, and because they trust their representatives, they also trust this.

Journalism, while never completely nonpartisan, could at least historically agree on the facts, if not the validity of the responses to them. We're now seeing the complete breakdown of even the trusting of facts, depending on who is reporting them. If you're not free to gather or report on facts, you're most certainly not a member of the free press.

fooqux··on So long Google, and thanks for all the nudes
> This is an argumentum ad populum fallacy. "Everybody Knows" this kind of thing is true, ergo you should believe the example here without evidence.

Fair.

> It's also kinda ridiculous in context. I mean, no, there are no cases in the literature where Google...

Ok you lost me. What is "the literature"? Published scientific studies about Google's app review process? Obviously there aren't any of those. Blog posts? You (presumably) just read one, and if you take a minute to search, you'll find tons more. News articles? Perhaps harder to find, but definitely exist.

The whole nudes thing is just a funny outlier; don't fixate on that. Who cares what randomly chosen reason the Google overmind decided it didn't like you. The point is it feels like a dice roll and you have no recourse when you suddenly and randomly fail it.

fooqux··on So long Google, and thanks for all the nudes
Anybody who's ever tried to get through their review process can attest that the article writer's experience is far from outside the norm.

Although I must admit I've never gotten nudes from them. Up your game, Google.

The entire point of a bath is to relax and soak in it. Otherwise I'd just take a far more economical shower.

fooqux··on Carmakers Have a New Idea to Boost EV Range: Add a Gas Engine
Every time they try and do this, it fails. The math is very much against you with converting energy this way and obviously they haven't solved that.

This seems to be a huge investment to make just to try and market the same technology but better this time.

If future jobs are simply reduced to liability scape goats (or more appropriately reverse centaurs) for management to pin things on then I'm taking up goose farming.

fooqux··on GrapheneOS project: pixel 11 no longer supports hardware memory tagging (MTE)
> Selling devices with GrapheneOS is planned but the details and timeline aren't worked out.

I hope they get worked out in short order. I'd love to buy one preconfigured if for no other reason then I'd like to show my support.

It also shows more of a commitment by Motorola. Harder to suddenly forget about providing you with what you need if they're selling gOS preinstalled.

fooqux··on GrapheneOS project: pixel 11 no longer supports hardware memory tagging (MTE)
Lol, I'm very curious what's in that pipe. It must be some exceedingly hallucinagenic stuff.
fooqux··on Maiao: Gerrit-style code review workflow for GitHub, GitLab, Gitea, others
Ah, if true, than I misunderstood and agree. That didn't sound like what the person I replied to was saying though.

It's hard to leave Gerrit after using it.

fooqux··on Maiao: Gerrit-style code review workflow for GitHub, GitLab, Gitea, others
Different strokes for different teams. Team size, project size, monolithic or not, etc. can all influence this.

I'll say from personal experience that Gerrit helped my team a lot, if for no other reason than enforcing a "one commit equals one change" model. Also, the commenting and reviewing experience was liked more in Gerrit than Github.

fooqux··on Maiao: Gerrit-style code review workflow for GitHub, GitLab, Gitea, others
Help me understand why I care about reviewing the fifteen commits my junior developer did while figuring out how to make a SQL query, and not just the final line of code? Typically, all I really care about is what's actually going into production, not the journey they took to get there. So, what am I missing?
fooqux··on Show HN: GlassBox – what the browser reveals, and how identifiable you are
In the old days, we just sent the content and let the client figure out what to do with it. If you navigated to homestarrunner.com and you didn't have flash installed, you just got a message saying to install it, or worst case, a broken icon in a frame.

We figured it out just fine.

fooqux··on The coolest anti-surveillance tools at Defcon [video]
I'm not sure I understand Simulacra. I get the idea, just spam devices around the area in hopes you're lost in the crowd. But anything designed to track you is purpose built to handle tons of devices moving about. Maybe if everyone had one in their pocket we could overload the surveillance devices, but at best you're just bloating their logs.

fooqux··on Felony charges for citizen deleting phone data at US Border
Why would I want to move to an objectively more subjugated place?

Besides that, you say to just pick up and leave as if it were that easy. And I suppose if I followed your advice, it could be. Get a divorce, not care about the kids (sorry, but I'm not bringing my daughters there), ignore the fact my parents are in their 80s, server all my friendships, likely end my career.

Not all freedoms are good. Or rather some bindings, like family and other loved ones, are worth it.

fooqux··on Felony charges for citizen deleting phone data at US Border
I'm just not sure what to do. What the US is turning into is incredibly sad and I wish I could leave.
fooqux··on Devices with GrapheneOS support should be available in 2027
If this is successful, I can see this trickling down to the lower end phones in the following years. If for no other reason than keeping their hardware as similar as possible.
fooqux··on Supersonic Trebuchet [video]
If I'm picturing what you're explaining correctly, I think this would be difficult. Suddenly accelerating the arm from zero to hundreds of mph would put immense stress on the arm, not to mention whatever you're planning on using to transfer that energy (you kinda hand waved that bit).

I think your assessment is correct about the energy losses. I'm just not sure about the fix.

fooqux··on Fairphone is now officially available in the United States
Considering the big players with R&D budgets valued in the billions have been struggling to make foldable phones, I can't imagine a niche player making one.
fooqux··on Fairphone is now officially available in the United States
Yeah, but only the Fairphone 4 (which is very dated at this point), and only from Murena which is a can of worms in itself. Support also ranges from non-existent to atrocious.

Directly buying from FP is a huge deal for me.

If they do, then migrate to a provider that offers what you need at that time. It's not like adding a new remote is hard.

This was eerie to read. I was very much Alan, only I reported to duty Monday morning because I thought, or rather knew, that's what was expected of me from my parents and from society.

This definitely gave me "road not taken" vibes and made me reconsider where I'd be, and more importantly how happy I'd be, if I'd done as Alan did.

Also, confusingly, I feel like I'm Alan all over again. I've been thinking of a massive career change (AKA, goose farming from the meme) a lot of recently due to AI sucking the fun out of my career.
