foolfoolz··on Reddit CEO Says Mods Too Powerful, Plans to Weaken After Blackout
a study from the last 17 years of reddit’s existence has shown you can pay them nothing and get all the value
foolfoolz··on Reddit CEO Says Mods Too Powerful, Plans to Weaken After Blackout
there’s always more people who want to mod. mods don’t own the content. i would expect reddit to have a rule saying if a reddit has over 1,000 posts it can’t go private. there’s already a ton of mod power and they can make money by keeping clearly paid content active
foolfoolz··on Thousands of subreddits pledge to go dark after the Reddit CEO’s recent remarks
none of this will have any impact. the subs need reddit as much as reddit needs them. collectively sure the subs can control reddit; for a short time. but new ones will appear. and the subs make money by being online so none of them will risk pledging more than 2 days

foolfoolz··on Defining a new HTTP method: HTTP Search (2021)
it’s extremely to share urls needing auth with people who have the same access levels as you, such as in your company
foolfoolz··on Evidence that the shingles vaccine prevents a good chunk of dementia cases
priorities are pretty clear. we spent <$20B on the covid vaccine, operation warp speed. ukraine received $75B in the last year from the u. s. if it was the same price, we could have solved 4 highly infectious diseases in just the last year. i’m not trying to get political on that specific war; just military in general is where the money goes
foolfoolz··on Evidence that the shingles vaccine prevents a good chunk of dementia cases
there’s quite a bit of active HSV1/2 work being done although it’s very early stage. a few vaccines. a cure attempt. unfortunately this virus is not seen as a target for funding. some of the labs working on these are just sub-teams of larger companies working to fight other medical challenges such as HIV or cancer. those get the funding and they are able to set side some money for HSV research.

probably because it’s thought of as a simple skin virus when more likely it’s a nervous system virus that manifests most visibly in the skin

foolfoolz··on The long road to recover Frogger 2 source from tape drives
this does not sound like a junior programmer error. this is not the kind of thing companies let inexperienced people come up with at least not on their own. this is a lack of testing. any real world backup test would have caught this. and i would expect the more senior engineers of the project to ensure this was covered
foolfoolz··on 12-Year-Old to Graduate from College with Five Degrees
while very impressive i would never trade going through the college experience with people my age for any advanced degree or study. that’s worth a lot more to me that the diploma
foolfoolz··on iOS 17 app sideloading might only be available in Europe
the o. s. isn’t a hammer. it’s a service

i’m sure you can find an o. s. that lets you do whatever you want. but will it be updated regularly with security fixes? will it support the latest connectivity technology like 5g? will it have built in support for the latest compression formats to take high res pics and videos? will it work anywhere in the world?

if it does sure. go use it. i don’t think this exists and i’m happy to pay apple for a new phone that does this and upgrade every 5 years

foolfoolz··on 'Algebra for none' fails in San Francisco
russian school of math is very popular at the schools my kids are at. i ask the parents why and they tell me they think math is important and the public school isn’t challenging them
foolfoolz··on 'Algebra for none' fails in San Francisco
talk to principals. i’ve talked to a few and heard pretty consistent responses. the early grades k-5 don’t really matter. middle school 6-8 you need to get into algebra so you are doing geometry in 9th grade. other honors programs for english need good grades but rarely require this kind of years in advance track / planning. but you have to make sure the high school you are targeting (when you get there) has the classes
foolfoolz··on 'Algebra for none' fails in San Francisco
math is just the beginning of these backwards policies. public schools in california have been removing advanced classes in the name of “equity” for years. the racial enrollment in those classes did not reflect the racial enrollment of the school.

the result? parents moving kids to private school. at the school nearest me they kindergarten enrollment is dropping. they are likely going to only have a a single class in a couple years

california is making it very clear the public school system is not going to help your children succeed beyond a base level. it seems to have the completely opposite goals of when i was in public school in california

foolfoolz··on California is a rooftop solar giant. New rules could change that
for decades we have seen planned communities with common assets paid for by hoa such as a pool and parks. i bet we will see in the future a neighborhood that “comes with” a 40 acre solar installation and storage as a perk. maybe even just storage. and if everyone feeds into it and draws from it you can get away from the grid power sharing changing requirements and host your own micro grid

foolfoolz··on The biggest EV battery recycling plant in the US is open for business
given the u. s. goals of evs and energy storage recycling batteries domestically instead of shipping the metals off to cheaper destinations is going to become a matter of national security as we won’t produce enough metals on our own
foolfoolz··on JSON vs. XML
soap may have taken liberties with http to get its work done (graphql: so what??) but it really felt like we reinvented the wheel. i was consuming massive wsdls in 2013/2014 and i consume massive open api specs in 2023. did anything actually improve?
foolfoolz··on Windows Sandbox
this seems like overkill to avoid installing a critical piece of work software like video chat
foolfoolz··on Type system of Fortnite's Verse language
this comment is wrong on multiple levels

- this reduces fortnite’s audience to 12 year olds. the average age of a fortnite player is an adult

- fortnite custom mods / modes are nearly all developed by adults (the people who will write in this language)

- verse is designed to be used more widely than just fortnite in other games by other game develoment professionals (that are nearly all adults)

i don’t understand how anyone can see a game that makes billions each year and think “12 year olds” are the driving force. video games are not just for teenagers and adults are the primary revenue streams because they have the disposable income

foolfoolz··on Fide Women’s Grand Prix Collapses into “Chaos” as Players Withdraw

foolfoolz··on Why construction projects always go over budget
the workers in trades in a construction project have plans. they have schematics that say do this here. to this exact dimension. using this exact type of connector. they don’t (usually) say which tools to use or how to do everything, it’s assumed you know

compare this to a software team that has plans (design docs) for everything they want o build. they have schematics (tickets) that say do this here. to this exact interface. they don’t (usually) say which tools to use or how to do everything, it’s assumed you know

i don’t think these scenarios should be that far apart. those people in the skyscraper aren’t moving walls. that would screw over the whole project. they have the output of more planning so they don’t have to. and it paid off during implementation

foolfoolz··on Java 20 / JDK 20: General Availability
its amazing how much the world hasn’t been able to keep up with java. github PRs still have no syntax highlighting support for record and var
foolfoolz··on ‘Forever chemicals’ deserve more EPA scrutiny
forever chemicals is another step in horrible messaging by the scientific community about the environment.

first we had global warming, then we have yearly “point of no return 2C” targets, now we have “forever” chemicals

why does it have to be so polarizing? plastic was just about a “forever” chemical until we did any work breaking it down and now have many solutions to degrading it. i’m sure these new chemicals will be similar in 10-20 years.

the fear mongering does nothing to help the real problem

foolfoolz··on Speak English to me: The secret world of programmers
nah it just shows how the valuable abstractions have moved up. i bet this 8 year mark will only get later over time until it disappears
foolfoolz··on Speak English to me: The secret world of programmers

foolfoolz··on Twitter has an internal root CA problem
when building secure systems one of the key principles is assume someone will leak the private key. this is how we get to hsm

maybe another one is assume you will lose access to the hsm. sure spinning up a new trust chain is annoying but it wouldn’t take that long to do. totally agree this post is overblown

foolfoolz··on JDK 20 and JDK 21: What we know so far
i wrote scala almost exclusively for 10 years and last year started doing more java. are there things i miss from scala? yes. self types. for comprehension. better list and collection syntax. scalas collection processing is probably the best there is.

are there things i don’t miss? yes. implicit. execution context on every future method. slow compiles. sbt

i couldn’t do java without records and “var”.

i don’t think scala has a real future. the binary incompatibility crushed scala for so long. sure scala 3 fixes it but not much has moved to 3. java is iterating at a faster pace than scala. they aren’t the same. scala was designed to be more terse and flexible and always will be.

but i don’t think that has made my programs worse in java. in some ways the lack of flexibility makes the code more predictable and easier to maintain
