If there is one company in the world who will not have any issues raising money, it would be OpenAI
foobarkey··on Show HN: Hooper – AI-driven stats and highlights for basketball play
Well done, ai_bullish++
foobarkey··on Can you tell if these images are real or generated?
7/10 - the easiest are humans that show fingers, AI-s seem really confused about how fingers work
foobarkey··on Design a GraphQL Schema So Good, It'll Make REST APIs Cry
After a lot of crying no longer using GraphQL, just REST API-s
foobarkey··on Microsoft laid off a DEI team, DEI is 'no longer business critical'
Sanity starting to return
foobarkey··on Big Ball of Mud (1999)
No worries, we have since moved on and people who cant write more than 2000 coherent lines of code have invented a new solution called microservices. Now you can have very simple services that don’t turn into a mess!

Well that’s the idea anyway, but it always turns into a mess and then I have been using a new term to describe it: spaghetti over http

foobarkey··on What do I want? (SWE Burnout)
Mostly joking here tho, at C level its worse then you need to battle the COO and CEO and CPO and need to be very political

I am mostly fed up too, thinking of changing career and doing something physical like building yachts or something with CO2 capture/methane, slowly starting preparations and getting equipment/facilities but it will be a side hobby, if I see it taking off then I am out :)

NOTE1: physical because i want laws of nature to dictate what is possible not someone who read a blog post on medium

NOTE2: travel helps, I recommend africa :)

foobarkey··on What do I want? (SWE Burnout)
Become big swinger CTO
foobarkey··on Well, it's just an AWS Account ID
Agree, obscurity is mostly not good to rely on, it allows you to congratulate yourself about defense in depth and what not but it’s a bit security theatre
foobarkey··on Mongo but on Postgres and with strong consistency benefits
Trying to use MongoDB by default for new projects because of the built in HA, dumped Postgres because the HA story is so bad on bare metal (alright if you are ok burning money on RDS or simiar).

Current preference: 1. HA MongoDB 2. HA MariaDB (Galera) or MySQL Cluster 3. Postgres Rube Goldberg Machine HA with Patroni 4. No HA Postgres

foobarkey··on Indian airline gives female travelers option to choose seats next to women
I tried it once 10 years ago, 0/1 success rate according to my datas
foobarkey··on Indian airline gives female travelers option to choose seats next to women
Showed this to my gf, she said Indian/Pakistani guys are the worst on Messenger/Whatsapp, like to always start the conversation with dick pics. So I guess this makes some sense but I do feel bit discriminated :D
foobarkey··on Emirates Pilots Implement Strategies to Cut Fuel Use and Emissions
Most of these seem like feelgood 0.01% savings
foobarkey··on How innovative is China in nuclear power?
Fair point, if the one with the most energy wins LLM-s battle then China looks like it will do even better

At least West has chairs, chairs are like people :)

foobarkey··on How innovative is China in nuclear power?
So what’s the game plan to compete with industry in China in 30 years when they have built out enough nuclear to do anything?

Adtech and LLM-s I guess :)

foobarkey··on Understanding the neuroscience behind burnout (2022)
They care too much about a job where they have no (minimal) equity and trying to reach staff+ carrot?
foobarkey··on Study finds 268% higher failure rates for Agile software projects
Not a huge fan of scrum ceremonies (besides daily standup) but as long as people dont know what they want before they see it, agile is the best way.

The waterfall things we already tried, does not work too great

foobarkey··on Unexpected anti-patterns for engineering leaders
Dear CEO-s,

There is a very simple way to increase engineering output by 10x, just remove everything related to these words:

- domain driven design - messaging - kafka - microservices - react / angular / svelte - distributed

Then when seeing an engineer just remind them: it puts the JSON in the db, it takes the JSON out of the db and puts it into HTML or it gets the hose again.

Engineers are a weird flock if left on their own they start dreaming up creative ways to put the JSON in the db instead of just doing it

foobarkey··on Proposal to change default annotation processing policy in JDK 23
Mixed feelings about this one, now every project has to start tweaking compiler options for lombok etc, I kind of like how it works out of the box.

I guess if you have a crazy project and a lot of transitive dependencies there is a small chance some processor lands on the classpath accidently and starts processing things, but I have not ran into this in practice

foobarkey··on Ask HN: What would you spend your time working on if you didn't need money?
Working on building my yacht and working on open source for fun (probably Debian developer)

Maybe doing something with biogas, CO2 capture

foobarkey··on Priced out of home ownership
As long as people are willing to pay “anything” for their home - prices will always be near the max that they are able to afford.

To be honest I don’t think capitalism is able to fix this problem, the only solution I see if government takes over and subsidizes housing enough from taxes to make it more affordable for salaried employees (needs to come with strings attached so the free market does not turn a quick buck reselling)

foobarkey··on Ask HN: Alternatives to HashiCorp Packer?
I am not using packer but happily using terraform/nomad/consul/vault - i have no problem with the license change
foobarkey··on EU opens child safety probes of Facebook and Instagram, citing addictive design
Think of the shareholders! Or in other words sounds unlikely
foobarkey··on Stock Options are like lottery tickets?
No, the company is hopefully in high growth stage at that point so ideally you want to join at x and get to IPO at 5x+ (or more) in 4 years. It’s sort of a combination of investing in low cap stocks and swing trading at the same.

Getting the train moving is the hard part but when it is already going it’s about not screwing up and execution, many times better odds (of course evaluate it like you would evaluate stock before buying)

The number of X-s for large cap RSU-s are less likely to be amazing so joining those RSU-s should be pretty much considered at face value (or maybe 10% YoY)

foobarkey··on Stock Options are like lottery tickets?
I think there is a sweet spot between risk and expected value, ideally earlier before the IPO looks like an obvious next step. Won’t be retirement levels of money in one go but I would say it is more like 80/20 (success/failure) in that case.

Gambling is only bad thing if the odds are not in your favor.

foobarkey··on Industrial Design Student Work: "How Long Should Objects Last?"
Objects should completely break down 1d after warranty expires so we can sell another one to the customer. This will increase economic growth, profits and GDP and helps with yacht purchases
foobarkey··on Show HN: Kubernates in Node.js
I vote for renaming it Kubernates, sounds way more high tech
foobarkey··on Identifiers are better off without meaning
Yes I am using 2 digits code for source and 2 digits for type (0-9)
foobarkey··on Identifiers are better off without meaning
I am currently using identifiers that encode the source and type in them. Mainly did it to make sure various backoffice ID-s never overlap, but added type since it is sometimes useful to identify object type just by looking at ID. This article is a bit discouragong but I have seen this also work well in practice so I guess we shall see how it works out. In any case the problems mentioned are unicorn++ problems and I would be happy if we need to tackle them :)
foobarkey··on I can fix this PC, boss, but I'll need to play games for hours to do it
Heartwarming boss
