folmar··on Cops Can Bypass iPhone's Automatic Reboot to Get into Locked Phones
In EU normally BIOS startup screen is the point at which they wave it as ok.
folmar··on Saving Jet Fuel
At least in Europe, except for the largest airports, the start slots are well organized enough that the taxi+wait time is just enough to warm up the engines, eliminating the saving.
folmar··on How my e-reader lost its stripes
My preferred Kindle 4 classic also fits in my pockets, used ones are at around 25 EUR and pretty hackable. I could barely imagine reading a book in 3.7", that's half of a smartphone.
folmar··on Grok CLI uploaded the whole home directory to GCS
Auto mode will upload artifacts to Anthropic without asking at least sometimes, for example it did upload my slide decks.
folmar··on Have you restarted your computer this week?
I don't know what current Windows 11 does, but my typical Linux Mint is single-digit seconds, and my t490 is 7 years old already. Windows 10 is a bit slower but still single second territory. With more current hardware we are talking about 2 seconds plus whatever BIOS needs, see sibling comments. Maybe you have corporate AV on the Windows PC, or funny drivers?
folmar··on New 10 GbE USB adapters are cooler, smaller, cheaper
My Thinkpad T490 will happily take any power provided voltage is high enough (15V+).
folmar··on I Cancelled Claude: Token Issues, Declining Quality, and Poor Support
If you don't use a lot of quota the cheapest monthly Claude Code is $20, Kimi Code is $19, i.e. the cost difference is minuscule.

Kimi wants my phone number on signup so a no-go for me.

folmar··on Alberta startup sells no-tech tractors for half price
Heavy duty trucks run well on electric in the EU at least, as the work time regulation make for regular charging and lower speed limits for trucks makes the consumption manageable.
folmar··on Alberta startup sells no-tech tractors for half price
Electric excavators are there, as they are low duty cycle, see sibling comments for details, but high load percent for long time is a killer for battery tech.

I could imagine tethered tractors with power line tensioned in the air, but the grid building cost will be quite high for intermittent usage. Only some land usages and plot shapes would work economically.

folmar··on 3.4M Solar Panels
In EU it would be some $3k for inverter, $5k for panels, another $5k for cables, connectors and mounting and that's it if you DIY everything. Prices with VAT included.
folmar··on 3.4M Solar Panels
I only get the following message:

folmar··on Old laptops in a colo as low cost servers
For physical machines of course yes.

The linked one is VPS, so all trouble fixing is easier.

folmar··on OpenAI should build Slack
> It drains my laptop's and iphone's battery like no tomorrow

Use Teams in Firefox with ublock for battery issues, somehow it consumes much less.

> It's the only software I use that, for some reason, has an effect on my typing accuracy.

That's because the typed letters appear with a large (often even ~1 s) delay. Close your eyes while typing and you'll be back on you track.

folmar··on OpenAI should build Slack
> The main problem now is that it works fine

Except from:

* notifications for channels

* search

* using more than one org (needs app restart!) although screen sharing between 'classic' and 'web' editions works only if sender's and receiver's graphic cards share a hw-accelerated video format blessed by teams. Not, it's not easy to check what edition you are running and you can't change it without poking js variables by hand

* inconsistent read statuses between devices

* 'incoming call not shown at all' bug (but you get a missed call notification)

* can't join two video calls even in two separate windows

* random audio device switching on every morning (even if you don't close the app and computer for the night)

folmar··on Europe's $24T Breakup with Visa and Mastercard Has Begun
> My understanding is that for car rental purposes, anything using Visa/MC (and not a national debit network like Visa Debit in the US) will work, it doesn't actually need to be backed by a revolving credit.

Many companies will refuse all debit cards, or all cards with "electronic use only" restriction, at least for the deposit, irrespective of the payment network involved.

folmar··on Discord will require a face scan or ID for full access next month
I use it for a non-it non-engineer group and everyone is happy with browser experience.

The mobile app is worse as it only allows writing in a few views that are not easy to access, and is becoming slower over time.

folmar··on Discord will require a face scan or ID for full access next month
The killer feateure is that it's very easy to move last $x messages to another topic, so if someone writes a short note that begins a conversation everyone is free to reorganize it, and also moving messages between threads is easy and nice.
folmar··on Raspberry Pi's New AI Hat Adds 8GB of RAM for Local LLMs
Wake word is not expensive, you can do it on esp32 https://docs.espressif.com/projects/esp-sr/en/latest/esp32s3... (and then send audio to something more beefy as TTS will be marginal at best).
folmar··on Pricing Changes for GitHub Actions
If you have a lot of not very time sensitive jobs, e.g. large merge trains, it was reasonable to have a not very fast runner run close to full utilization. Now that you'd pay by the run-minute, it'll be cheaper to move to a faster runner and run it at 10%.
folmar··on Using e-ink tablet as monitor for Linux
It's not usual for PC, but if you select "remove animation" on Android you're good on 2 fps. Many applications do like crap as the first placeholders are given little attention, but there are only big refreshes, and only handful of apps written so bad that they ignore the setting and make animated placeholder.

The only thing is that you need to stick to Page Up/Page Down for scrolling.

folmar··on VPN location claims don't match real traffic exits
Bromite is unmaintained anymore, Cromite is the current fork.
folmar··on VPN location claims don't match real traffic exits
I've never seen one in Poland.
folmar··on Nearly all UK drivers say headlights are too bright
Apparently Toyota+Lexus are ordering the most blinding lights without any reason. Talk to the dealer - if no one complains, they don't feel the need to fix.
folmar··on Pikaday: A friendly guide to front-end date pickers
Even if, that does not help. When asked for a birthday I need validation of the date in country when I was born, not the country I'm in, not the locale I'm using for display and not the locale server/requesting company is in.
folmar··on Pikaday: A friendly guide to front-end date pickers
And even if they have, representations of noon and midnight differ.
folmar··on Pikaday: A friendly guide to front-end date pickers
This is the place where the date picker does not help the user at all. It's easier to type the, presumably memorized, date, than to look it up in the calendar no matter how nice and handy the calendar is. Sure it does solve validation problem. Or maybe not correctly, don't ask about locales and date adjustments.
folmar··on Keep Android Open
Maybe some, but certainly not all in the list. Neither Ryanair nor Wizzair need app, you can do everything in the browser.
folmar··on Apple alerts exploit developer that his iPhone was targeted with gov spyware
You need to consider your location known to the government at all times if they know they'd want it beforehand. Most places are either surveilled heavily or sparsely populated, i.e. good for satellite-based observation. Maybe also to big enough corporations if they really want.

This does not imply that it is easy to track everyone everywhere at all times. I guess most targeted ones would like to protect their communication, and even meetings in person are possible if you keep some safeguards.
