folmar··on Arduino PLC IDE
It's sadly bread and butter, if you order a typical PLC program made-to-measure you'll get ladders. Anyway custom languages are certainly not the way to go, IEC 61131-3 languages are virtually always used, LD being most popular and SFC also gets its share.
folmar··on Window Maker: X11 window manager with the look and feel of the NeXTSTEP UI
I think this is a bug in upgrade path, I have my normal profile with this problem (and a lot of accumulated things) but if I launch Firefox with a fresh profile then it works nice.

Pine is not dead for me yet. I use alpine as daily driver, although the releases are not that often.
folmar··on WhenFS: Calendar Is Now a File System
Get close by mounting your CalDAV server directory with the usual WebDAV tooling.
folmar··on Make your electronics tamper-evident
If you are paranoid/targeted you just normally don't leave it, just always take it with you.
folmar··on Make your electronics tamper-evident
Not to defend the tapes, but typical use case of holo tape is to make your own pattern, which comes with big setup cost and small marginal cost of production, so it's not economically feasible/reasonable to copy it for one-off stunt.
folmar··on "We ran out of columns"
If you get a typically-structured Java/Spring application then often yes. By typically structured I mean domain objects, DTOs, service layer, controller layer, view layer. The idiomatic use of dependency injection frees the mind of the reader from understanding all the dependencies in code, just use an @Autowired class you want and someone part has the knowledge to configure it and does so.

> source control was clunky and a pain in the ass to set up

I concur. Creating a CVS repository was not harder than creating a git repository now `cvs -d $dir init`, and using, typical for the time, shared network drive, gives server experience without setting up a specialized server. It was just not included with Windows/typical Windows dev tools, so you had to know it existed, and knowledge was slower and harder to get.

In Europe totally, and for example in Germany it's customary to get you six week vacation in the summer.

This also has the benefit that the workplace has to have real back-up person for all matters, as six weeks is too long to shove everything under the carpet waiting for your return.

folmar··on Towards userspaceification of POSIX – part I: signal handling and IO
There are a few existing libraries like libancillary that would do this for you and provide some level of OS compatibility.
folmar··on Stop Microsoft users sending 'reactions' to email by adding a postfix header
Most of the time I would be fine with the plain old read receipt + no other mail stating protest. The reactions have too different set between clients to convey enough meaning for me.
folmar··on What UI density means and how to design for it
It's only turtle slow if you use their cloud version, onprem is reasonable (under 1s for any page, much faster for simpler ones).
folmar··on Apple’s “Let Loose” iPad event was shot on iPhone with Panavision lenses
Xiaomi is running a massive "Shot on MI $X $Y-AI camera" watermark campaign, but they aren't restricting it to flagship models, so you'll also see it on barely passable shots from $50 phones.
folmar··on How to found a company in Germany: 14 "easy" steps and lots of pain
Virtually all common law countries provide this easily, and civil law countries provide a slightly different worded document of similar usage, i.e. a certificate of being eligible to marry under your country law. In most cases they are treated as equal once you have them, although the procedures and conditions vary.
folmar··on AMD Unveils Their Embedded+ Architecture, Ryzen Embedded with Versal Together
Higher end oscilloscope, signal generators and similar. A lot of the world runs on Windows Xp Embedded or very quirky Linux distros.
folmar··on Keeping your data from Apple is harder than expected
On Android it is typically done with a firewall app, like AFWall+
folmar··on DBeaver – open-source database client
I've tested it since you recommend it but it seems it can't do Postgres local connection (via socket-file = the default). Not great UX on linux.

folmar··on Easter eggs on Swiss maps (2021)
That's not a very high bar.

The style in the same as all pre-Internet paper maps I've seen, but with much higher fidelity. So it looks nice to me, but it's not the most readable, mostly the names do not stand out in the dark green background.

folmar··on I don't think the cheapest APC Back-UPS units can be monitored except in Windows
If you do you shopping around getting clear sine output does not increase the price usually, or maybe a few percent.
folmar··on I don't think the cheapest APC Back-UPS units can be monitored except in Windows
Power density is not a problem usually as you don't care for the size and weight, and lead-acid give best bang for buck.
folmar··on Ask HN: Cleanest way to manage Windows OS?
VMware Workstation passthoughs are very reliable for me. I can't say the same for VirtualBox though.
folmar··on Projected File System
Though this is implemented in bash itself and only works in bash, not in other programs.
folmar··on LED Matrix Earrings
Usually they are large but surprisingly light, made from very thin metal foil.
folmar··on Keep your phone number private with Signal usernames
There is old-now-unused "nickname".
folmar··on Keep your phone number private with Signal usernames
Also nice to mention that some of those are connected and some are not. For example I have a personal account (that I did not create but appeared magically at some point; it behaves as totally separate), a work account (main work tenant) and three guest work tenants that share the password, but don't share the 2fa. For some apps you chose the tenant, but not for all.

A quick comparison of marketing slides lands you with 0.5 MOPS for FC-NVMe for Qlogic 2770 and 0.7 MOPS for PCIe Micron 9100 PRO, so the better speeds are not quite there, although spending quite a lot on server gear lands you near the performance of a workstation-grade drive from 2017.

Which is still not bad, when I was shopping around in 2018 no money could buy performance comparable to a locally-attached NVMe in a more professional/datacenter-ready form.

folmar··on Considerations for a long-running Raspberry Pi
Here in Europe I don't see any of them for less than $100. And for a small server something like OrangePi 3B (with nvme etc.) would be be reasonable at half the price and half the power.
