followben··on 10 years building vertical software: are we cooked?
So many hallmarks of LLM authorship (the arrows, the framing, the unnecessary fluff, the big important-sounding words). Not to mention the vested interests of the author. Let’s just call it what it is: bullshit. No signal, just noise.
followben··on Charles Proxy
Wow. Charles was indispensable tool for working with HTTP apis back when I got started as an iOS dev in 2011. Great to see it still going strong.
followben··on End of an Era: Landsat 7 Decommissioned After 25 Years of Earth Observation
In 1990 I was super excited to have my high school work experience application accepted to CSIRO in Macquarie Park, only to find when I turned up that I’d spend the whole boring week cataloging magnetic tape from these dull satellites Landsat 4 & 5. The only time my greybeard supervisor seemed remotely animated was when he started imagining what imagery 6 & 7 would send back.

How wrong I was; what this now greybeard wouldn’t give to rummage through that lab again.

RIP #7.

How does this compare to other pg-backed python job runners like Procrastinate [0] or Chancy [1]?

followben··on Apple passwords deserve an app
Yeah, this is a bugbear. FWIW my wife and I "share" keychain items by airdropping them to one another as required. It works, but nowhere near as nice as having a common record we can both maintain.

followben··on Ask HN: Which open source versions of SaaS products would you like to see?
Trello.

Lots of half-baked clones but remarkably few quality foss implementations. WeKan is… a mess. Taiga is complex & the frontend is CoffeeScript (!!). FocalBoard looks about the best of them, but it’s still missing many features and they’ve explicitly rejected calls for OAuth and/ or SAML because they want as a paid feature.

followben··on Multi-User Dungeons (MUDs): What Are They? and How to Play
Yup - huge fan 20yrs (!!) ago. Great community with plenty of players back then. I still log into my main character every couple of years just to check they’re still going.
followben··on Timezone Bullshit
This needs more upvotes.
followben··on Asdf – An Extendable Version Manager
I'd be interested in that article - be great if you could re-up the footnote :)
followben··on How Go helped save HealthCare.gov
Great writeup. AdHoc sounds like a really interesting company to work for. Does anyone know if there are similar firms working to improve online govt services in Australia?
followben··on Hiring Myths Common in Hacker News Discussions
Yes!

I moved internationally in 2012 and, knowing no-one in my new city, promptly volunteered to organise the local chapter of a popular developer meetup. I met dozens of friends and future colleagues at those monthly meets. Almost immediately I got a job with the outgoing organiser, and a couple of years later I recruited the core of a greenfield team from the regular attendees. One of them wasn't even working professionally with the language, but it was clear from talking to them and seeing their code they had potential. Moreover they were a really decent yet introverted person who just needed a break. I loved working with them and was proud to watch them grow into a truly accomplished yet extremely humble engineer. I'd hire them again in a heartbeat.

Another: my department was made redundant in March (great timing), but I immediately picked up contract work with a friend I first worked alongside many years ago. I've hired him into multiple roles in the interim with great success... and now I get to help build his business. We trust each other to be candid and know each others strengths and weaknesses (technically and personally) and he pays me on time. It's great.

Another: we needed a QA for my last team and one of our senior devs recommended someone from an old workplace. Feels bad saying it now, but with no experience of our toolset or domain we'd never have given their resume a second look. But good QAs are hard to find and we were desperate, so after a promising interview we hired them on a trial. Couldn’t have gone better - obliging, a quick study, and a knack for surfacing esoteric bugs. They went on to lead QA for our company.

Referrals and “the network” can work to your advantage.

Yet... when growing my last team I’d exhausted that network, so we advertised on StackOverflow. Amongst many applications were from two "developer famous" people I knew by reputation (twitter, conference talks, blog posts, book authorship etc). Our whiteboard-free process was a friendly interview followed by a small take-home code challenge. One came was arrogant and dismissive and said had neither the time nor inclination for take-home projects. While the other was gregarious, gracious and completed the task without fuss. Guess who we hired? They were technical mentor to virtually everyone on the team (myself included) and were instrumental in laying a solid architectural foundation of our product.

While I’ve plenty of “war stories”, it really is nice to remember how many gracious, friendly and deeply competent people I’ve worked with over the years.

followben··on Ask HN: What's your quarantine side project?
I hear you.

We're fortunate we both still have jobs and can work from home, but doing so full-time while caring for a demanding 3yo, homeschooling an inquisitive 8yo with ADHD and cooking/ cleaning/ washing/ housework; we feel like incompetent plate-spinners. We too take it in shifts, up at 6am, to bed gone midnight.

I've never felt more knackered or guilty. Guilty neither of our kids (nor our employer) get the best of us. Guilty at feeling hard done by when we're not really: we've friends who've lost their livelihood and know health workers are risking their lives. We know it ends, but man... not soon enough.

followben··on Dutch radio amateurs image far side of the Moon using Chinese satellite data
Both Longjiang satellites carry a VHF/UHF amateur radio transceiver built and operated by the Harbin Institute of Technology in China. They've open sourced software specifically so radio amateurs can decode telemetry as well as image data: https://github.com/bg2bhc/gr-dslwp
followben··on Bose accused of secretly sharing user listening habits
The article and the complaint itself are rather short on detail on exactly how they're tracking now playing info in a way that's personally identifiable (which the Connect app's Privacy Policy specifically says they don't do).
followben··on Find Developers and Designers for Side Projects
My experience with http://builditwith.me has been very poor: a handful of contacts in 3+ years, almost all "ideas" people seeking designers/ developers to build their app for free or paltry sweat equity.

There's also no way to remove your account or update it to reflect you're no longer available or interested in collaborating. I've emailed Drew numerous times asking to de-activate or de-register my profile but I've yet to receive a response.

followben··on Tent.is alpha
I'm surprised by some of the negativity here - it's a pretty neat service for an alpha. Sure there's kinks/ shortcomings, but it's very early days. They even seem to be ironing things out even as we speak (switched from 140 to 256 char status updates in front of my eyes).
