fogihujy··on Missouri website that leaked SSN
I'm sure the sites are legal. I was referring to the comment about such data being used for marketing.
fogihujy··on Missouri website that leaked SSN
That would not be GDPR-compatible.
fogihujy··on Multiple vulnerabilities in WP Fastest Cache plugin
I work helping people set up things like caching. On the three sites I looked at today, caching plugins had an immediate and positive effect.

That serving static files use less resources than firing up PHP should hardly be surprising.

Sure, mod_lsapi and FastCGI are fast, and opcache is a godsend, but static files are still going to be faster than doing multiple MySQL queries, triggering plugins, rendering the HTML, doing whatever post-processing the plugins do, and then serving the result.

fogihujy··on Multiple vulnerabilities in WP Fastest Cache plugin
Yeah, if you're on cheap shared hosting (which many, many WordPress sites are), then you're going to hit various limits and have your site disabled the day Ahrefs and Majestic 12 both decide to crawl your site the same day.

A properly set up caching plugin basically saves the pages as plain HTML and serve them with mod_rewrite instead of invoking PHP every time. The speed difference for an individual page load might not be that much for a properly optimized site, but the overall resource usage will be much lower.

W3 Total Cache if you're on shared hosting.
fogihujy··on OVH is down along with its status page
The description of the ovh_status account explicitly mentions it's an unofficial account:

Yeah, when it's responding at all.

fogihujy··on New work sheds light on the Etruscans, who may have founded Rome
It depends on how you look at things. The Nordic Bronze age spread around the entire Baltic as well, and genetic markers associated with Finnic cultures appeared much later, and in areas further north and east.

However, as the article mentions, it's unwise to assume there is a 100% correlation between genetic markers and culture/language. The Baltic Sea region has been a trade hub since before the the first indo-european migrations into the area, and some genetic mixing must have been unavoidable.

fogihujy··on When McDonalds Came to Denmark
Pretty much. One has to stay unemployable which probably isn't as easy as one would think.
fogihujy··on When McDonalds Came to Denmark
> unemployment benifits

For those unaware, social benefits in Denmark can be as high as 2000€ per month, depending on the circumstances. It's simply not viable to pay employees less, as they'd have no reason to come to work.

fogihujy··on Footage of Australian Raven Attacking a Wing Drone in Canberra, Australia
According to Wikipedia, European Magpies have been observed performing funeral rites (alas, the link to the study is gone). It's not impossible you witnessed a similar but undocumented phenomena.

A human would be quite capable of constructing a tool out of wire. Humans figured out water displacement too, and ravens have culture and pass their knowledge on to their young just like we do.

The interesting thing isn't exact measurements of intelligence, though, but rather the fact that intelligence has developed independently. We know that we and our fellow primates are amongst the smartest animals on the planet. The thing about ravens is that they prove we're not the only ones.

fogihujy··on Footage of Australian Raven Attacking a Wing Drone in Canberra, Australia
I'm not sure your average raven is smarter than your average human, but Corvids are *very* intelligent.

If they've figured out the drones drop food when attacked then they'll keep attacking, and teach others of their species to do it too.

fogihujy··on One Stuck Box of Fertilizer Shows the Global Supply Chain Crisis
Frankly, I doubt it. While it would cause severe issues if the Chinese decided to stop exporting goods to the rest of the World, the supply chains have been under a lot of strain the past two years.

After all that's happened, I'd be more surprised if the supply chains hadn't been affected.

fogihujy··on The Frustration with Productivity Culture
It's almost as if this wasn't a one-sided issue that could be solved by a few anonymous comments on a discussion forum aimed at a crowd that are relatively privileged compared to most of the World's population.

Jests aside, these are all valid points, and it's sad that the current political climate has become so polarized that it's difficult to have a reasonable discussion about this. Going from one extreme to the other won't necessarily result in a net improvement.

fogihujy··on The Frustration with Productivity Culture
Also, have our society evolved into one that we actually want? I would expect the answer to vary greatly, depending on whom you ask.
fogihujy··on Remembering When Only Barbarians Drank Milk (2018)
Let's put it this way: Consuming dairy products was historically seen so beneficial that we evolved the ability to digest lactose not just once, but multiple times in history.

It may not be as critical today, but at some point in time, being able to digest lactose was an evolutionary advantage.

fogihujy··on X Window System on a Floppy
Yeah, even if you include the stuff in ROM, Macs and Amigas had full GUI environments using much less space back in the 80's.

With that in mind, having an antique version of X running from a floppy isn't that impressive. It's still really cool though. :D

fogihujy··on Usage statistics of server-side programming languages for websites
Facebook has done impressive things with PHP, but they are one single entity. WordPress is an entire ecosystem with millions of users, and while Facebook changing their underlying stuff wouldn't be noticed by most, I can assure you there would be a large amount of people who noticed if WordPress decided to switch to ASP.NET or something.
fogihujy··on Social media influencer/model created from AI lands 100 sponsorships
Restoration using traditional and well-documented techniques are perfectly "authentic". A modern replica pyramid built with steel and concrete, not so much.

An actual replica pyramid built using traditional methods? Not sure, but I would love to see it. :D

fogihujy··on Usage statistics of server-side programming languages for websites
In PHP's case it's about WordPress which still being deployed at a very high rate. While the blogging thing isn't that much in focus anymore, WordPress + Divi + WooCommerce is an extremely common stack for setting up eCommerce sites.

An yes, then there's Drupal, Laravel, Symfony, and many others, and they're going strong too. Heck, even Joomla is actively developed even though it's probably small enough today to be considered legacy.

fogihujy··on 17B life years could be saved if air pollution was reduced to WHO standards
I assume you'd cut around the fences. Once you get the hang of it, a scythe is quite precise.

Stones can be difficult if they're tall enough and everywhere. Otherwise you'd just make sure to keep the blade higher than the stones.

fogihujy··on 17B life years could be saved if air pollution was reduced to WHO standards
It's situated on an archepilago in the Baltic sea. Sure, it might be less windy than other coastal cities, but Stockholm is far windier than cities in-land.

Stockholm has tolls to reduce road congestion though. The place was definitely smellier back in the 90's.

fogihujy··on 17B life years could be saved if air pollution was reduced to WHO standards
A good old scythe is much faster than a weed whacker for larger areas. Once you get the hang of it, it's not much slower than a lawn mower. It's good excersize too.

A lot of places don't have electricity or paved roads...
fogihujy··on Sauna use as a lifestyle practice to extend healthspan
Place the sauna in the basement. Heat goes up on its own.
fogihujy··on Sauna use as a lifestyle practice to extend healthspan
On the other hand, there's a lot of people like me too; one sauna in the basement, one smoke sauna a bit further away from the house (near a river), and a regular outdoor sauna in the yard. Sauna is serious business! :)
fogihujy··on Archaeologists Discover 'Lost Golden City of Luxor'
The next Pharao wanted to erase all traces of his father, and ordered the destruction of a lot of the documentation regarding his reign, including a lot of inscriptions and monuments.

He also prohibited the worship of most of the Egyptian pantheon, declared that he was the only one who was allowed to pray to the remaining one. Basically, he grabbed a lot of power from the priests. That, of course, also resulted in some destroyed religious texts.

Furthermore, many of the more mundane texts were on clay tablets that were occasionally wiped and re-used.

Or, you know, just draw water from an old well. Distilled water seems too clinical.
