fnordfnordfnord··on GOP Rep. on cyber committee dumped MSFT shortly before $10B contract scrapped
You'd have to have the insider information far in advance.

>is there no way that the call options could be purchased on the other side by a friendly party that is a participant in the game?

Not for retail traders. I sell covered calls a lot and I never know who buys them.

fnordfnordfnord··on NodeMCU ESP32-C3 WiFi and BLE IoT boards show up for about $4
My sons aren't named Jason but I still feel called out a little bit.
fnordfnordfnord··on Robinhood S-1 IPO
ToS is pretty good. Takes some getting used to though and is sometimes confusing.
fnordfnordfnord··on Robinhood S-1 IPO
A rose by any other name...
fnordfnordfnord··on Robinhood S-1 IPO
>or they are making a killing on crypto fees.

They don't charge commissions to trade crypto. Not sure where they're skimming the money but the terrible order fills you get there gives me an idea.

fnordfnordfnord··on Robinhood S-1 IPO
Their app and UI are great, really great; but I closed most of my trades after the Gamestop fiasco and I'm not coming back. I kept the debit card and keep a few bucks in there, still use the app for quick quotes sometimes but that's about it.
fnordfnordfnord··on New LinkedIn Data Leak Leaves 700M Users Exposed
> I'm squatting. To ensure they're not used as socket puppets.

Good idea. I've noticed more of those popping up. My wife has an Instagram impersonator that constantly spams some kind of essential oils crap or other beauty product snake oil.

fnordfnordfnord··on Roblox on Linux with recent Wine 6.11
Yup. My kids are on Windows machines primarily because of Roblox
fnordfnordfnord··on Midair Collision over Denver
You can buy the components separately but they won't usually be certified so that's only useful for EAA types and people like Mike Patey.
fnordfnordfnord··on Police in Minnesota round up journalists and take pictures of their faces
You stop relying on blanket dispersal orders, curfews, other things like that. Arrest people for shooting, looting, throwing bricks, setting fires, you know, crimes that matter.
fnordfnordfnord··on Why Microsoft Wants Discord
>I'd love to see a few smaller software companies refuse to get bought up and instead cultivate an independent mindset.

Didn't Oakley sunglasses try something similar when Luxottica first tried to buy them and then Luxottica managed to ruin them and ended up buying them much cheaper?

And hasn't Microsoft already done the same to a large number of startups?

fnordfnordfnord··on Reddit’s most popular subreddits go private in protest against ‘censorship’
Yeah and quite a large fraction of those should probably never be granted mod powers over even something as insignificant as a subreddit.
fnordfnordfnord··on Over twenty subreddits have gone private
Yeah. He's pretty awful and when I find my myself even partially in agreement with his public statements I double check carefully.
fnordfnordfnord··on Reddit’s most popular subreddits go private in protest against ‘censorship’
Eh. Reddit is very unlikely to do that. The subreddits would be overrun with trash pretty quickly.
fnordfnordfnord··on GNU Octave 6.1.0
Like you, I haven't used either for serious work in many years but the last time I was doing serious work I found Python to be much faster. I discovered this by accident after porting one of my Matlab programs to Python and noticed an immediate 4x speed improvement. I worked with both for many more years afterward and in my experience Python was usually faster with a few exceptions.

That said, Matlab had great tech support and the sales rep was always super helpful. They were much nicer to work with than say National Instruments.

fnordfnordfnord··on Boeing 747s receive software updates over floppy disks
My experience is just the opposite. Have had to replace more floppy drives than I can count. Used to work in a dusty environment, but that alone doesn't explain the failure rate.
fnordfnordfnord··on Spies can eavesdrop by watching a light bulb's vibrations
The shock absorber isn't a great analogy for a filter cap but, a capacitor has inductance and resistance, even though it is primarily a capacitor and we usually ignore the L and R for simplicity's sake.
fnordfnordfnord··on Woman makes $420k by buying insurance on flights she predicted would get delayed
I was offered hotel, rebooking, and spending money to give up my seat on a flight from Schipol to NYC once; it was about 15 years ago though.
fnordfnordfnord··on What computer and software is used by the Falcon 9? (2015)
A lot of Ada as well.
fnordfnordfnord··on New two-stroke engine design could help keep internal combustion around longer
It sounds somewhat similar to a supercharged two-stroke design like the formerly very popular Detroit Diesels (8V71, 6V92TA, for example). None of those engines were very efficient though.

Also, glow plugs are only used for starting.

fnordfnordfnord··on New two-stroke engine design could help keep internal combustion around longer
It's not just the tech, it's the lack of infrastructure, especially rural infrastructure. It'll be more than 10 years.
fnordfnordfnord··on New two-stroke engine design could help keep internal combustion around longer
The batteries are expensive but when you factor the cost of fuel + oil and the hassle of dealing with it, the case for batteries doesn't look as bad.
fnordfnordfnord··on 9M logs of Brits' road journeys spill from number-plate camera dashboard
License plates should be done away with. Replace them with RFID tags that log, and can alert the driver each time they're activated. Drivers could switch them off when they're at home or parked.

Anyone, not just the government can operate an ALPR system and record this data for whatever purpose they wish.

fnordfnordfnord··on Instacart’s gig workers are planning a nationwide strike
I think the normal rules are out the window. Nobody is going to find an employment gap beginning in March of 2020 very remarkable.
fnordfnordfnord··on Some Churches Are Still Packing in Crowds
Good grief. Just stop gathering in groups for a couple of months.
fnordfnordfnord··on Instacart’s gig workers are planning a nationwide strike
No requirement to look for work for the unemployed, that's been waived, at least in my state.
fnordfnordfnord··on Mats Järlström’s victorious 6-year battle over yellow lights
No, it's not confusing at all. The guy never offered engineering services to the public.

This isn't anywhere near the same thing as "Software Engineer"

fnordfnordfnord··on Mats Järlström’s victorious 6-year battle over yellow lights
Yes but that has nothing to do with the State Board of Engineering Examiners or whatever Florida's equivalent is.
fnordfnordfnord··on Mats Järlström’s victorious 6-year battle over yellow lights
Yes but the man didn't claim to be a registered PE, qualified and entitled to practice in Oregon, he simply said that he has an engineering degree and is employed as an engineer. There are many many people who are engineers but who are not registered Professional Engineers.
fnordfnordfnord··on Tesla teardown finds electronics 6 years ahead of Toyota and VW
Don't look at my GMC then. Panel gaps are bad. Paint so thin you can see through it. Rattles and squeaks everywhere. And the electronics are of course garbage.
