fmakunbound··on Why I Quit a $450k Engineering Job at Netflix
$450k/year then at the bottom,

> if you enjoyed this article, I’d greatly appreciate your support if you could buy me a coffee here

What’s going on there?

fmakunbound··on Heat people, not spaces (2015)
I’m pretty sure that was pitched in an episode of Silicon Valley, except microwaves
fmakunbound··on Make Linux look like Windows 95
Man, that’s all I really wanted.
fmakunbound··on World’s first octopus farm stirs ethical debate
Does that work for, for example, veal or lamb?
fmakunbound··on Fred's ImageMagick Scripts
GraphicsMagick used to have an epic critique of ImageMagick. It’s long gone though, except maybe via archive.org
fmakunbound··on Gmail – A New Integrated Layout
Is it any faster after this? I’m using Fastmail which is snappy to navigate around in and not sluggish when I type.
fmakunbound··on The Unbundling of Airflow
It's ok, but seems to be a bit too complex for what it does. It was pretty janky running it locally (pegged the CPU), and now that we have it in MWAA we've got several support issues on it with AWS for unkillable task instances and scheduler problems.
fmakunbound··on Rust started as a personal project in 2006
I wonder when he interviews, do they still ask him to fizzbuzz and search a binary tree.
fmakunbound··on Easily handle CLI operation via Python instead of regular Bash programs
I will try this, but I still have ptsd from the last time I installed something python based.
fmakunbound··on James Webb Telescope Sends Home a Selfie and 18 Images of Starlight
I’m stoked for this. Seeing a car launched into space is kinda meh, but planetary probes like Voyager, Cassini/Huygens and telescopes like Hubble, Chandra, LIGO and now Webb is where the truly grand, awe inspiring stuff is.
fmakunbound··on Sockets for Dummies
When I was a kid, I recall writing a very simple (think read a line, send a line, no select() so blocked unless the right order for read/send line operations took place). It was in C on Linux.

Having something appear on another computer was one of those magical moments in my career – like the first time I got BASIC on Apple II to print "*" all over the screen. Nothing much has come close since since – maybe a few "Ah ha" moments in Prolog, Lisp or Forth...

fmakunbound··on Running Lisp in Production (2020)
I have not looked at Elixir. It is possible for the user to extend its syntax?
fmakunbound··on Running Lisp in Production (2020)
I love how a library just adds in a JSON literal syntax to the language and it's not even worth noting.
fmakunbound··on Sibyl – Prediction Service at DoorDash (2020)
I feel like Netflix gave up. All I get is shit I already saw.
fmakunbound··on Linux on a 486SX
> a 486DX/33, but with 4GB of RAM

Wonder how long it took to sequentially scan 4GB of RAM

fmakunbound··on 1Password Has Raised $620M
Am I missing anything with 1Password, already using Bitwarden?
fmakunbound··on Will you write HTML with us tomorrow?
I like this web page. It is very readable. I wish more pages had this splendor. Perhaps it can be web3.
fmakunbound··on Poll: Why are people leaving their jobs?
As in fisticuffs?
fmakunbound··on Ask HN: My boss doesn't think I'm doing good work, how to proceed?
I’m pretty sure you’re about to be fired. You should give your notice as soon as possible and immediately look for a new position. Getting fired should normally not come as a surprise to you. If it does you’d have to be completely clueless, or there are things going on outside your control. You seem self conscious so the former seems unlikely.
fmakunbound··on A Review of the Zig Programming Language (Using Advent of Code 2021)
> and so making getting at heap allocations harder by explicitly getting them through an allocator is a great thing.

Did not follow this logic.

fmakunbound··on New York City bans natural gas in new buildings
Resistive
fmakunbound··on Ask HN: I'm tired of intense code review cycles
Leave. Life is too short and your profession is in too high a demand.

However, make sure management knows it’s the architect’s micromanaging/senseless pedantry that is the problem. If you’re feeling dread about creating a PR, others are also.

fmakunbound··on Clojure Macros and Metaprogramming
I wish Clojure’s reader wasn’t so needlessly limited.
fmakunbound··on Show HN: We open sourced our new Mac developer setup script
> and them saying "hey we've preconfigured emacs for you."

Good god, that’s like wearing someone else’s dirty underwear.

fmakunbound··on Monitoring 27kw Generac Generator with Raspberry Pi and Multimode Fiber
I have the 22kW model which I believe is air cooled. Living under Texas’ “freedom grid”. I would say it’s kind of louder than I’d like, probably like standing right next to my Tacoma, but when the power goes out it sounds like sweet angels singing.
fmakunbound··on Dick Smith (Entrepreneur)
I recall the Fun Way series book fondly. As a kid, I did the kits over and over (even unsoldering the PCB kits from the later books after soldering them together). I probably breathed in too much leaded solder vapors, but it’s what put me on the path to electrical and computer engineering.
fmakunbound··on After 20 Years of Failure, Kill the TSA
The TSA literally grabbed my balls in LAX on a flight to Dallas.
fmakunbound··on Ask HN: What kind of electronics would you stockpile for doomsday?
Maybe a ham transceiver with large antenna. Beyond that, water, food, guns and a stack of porn probably. Oh and my beer brewing gear.
fmakunbound··on WSL2 can now mount Linux ext4 disks directly
Cool. Then I’ll create Linux only applications and be compatible on both platforms. Bye bye to Win32, I guess.
fmakunbound··on I just want to run this one Python script
I sure want to believe this is the last tooling I’ll need to use for Python tooling nirvana, but that’s what they told me about pip, pip3, venv, vitrualenv, conda.. And one coworker just suggested I just run the script in Docker. Ugh
