fmajid··on Bill Draper has died
What we in California don’t have is sustainably plentiful water, or a sane system of water rights to apportion it.
fmajid··on Turn off Apple Intelligence on macOS 27 and get its disk space back
It’s not about privacy, it’s about kneecapping competitors, just like when they blocked the advertising ID but exempted themselves from this because “Apple is not a third-party, we’re a second-party”.

Apple is an advertising company and thus inherently untrustworthy.

fmajid··on On social reality in China
The OP is describing a low-trust culture. The US was a high-trust culture, but this is breaking down, and people don't realize how valuable that was and is in the process of being lost.
fmajid··on macOS 27 is so buggy
Most Big Tech firms have shut down their QA teams and moved to CI only, a false economy with predictable effects on software quality.
fmajid··on California bans child marriage, a practice still legal in 32 US states
The real scandal is not so much that there are still 32 states allowing child marriage, but that efforts to end the practice are successfully resisted as in Wisconsin:

fmajid··on Why copyright makes no sense
Copyright makes perfect sense for the purpose it was originally invented for: censorship.

The British monarchy created copyright, literally to control what printers were allowed to copy. To enforce this, printing presses were tightly regulated, with severe criminal penalties for operating an unlicensed press. Basically what Big Copyright wants for their own purposes.

fmajid··on Tcl/Tk 9.1
The everything is a string approach shows its limits quite quickly. Lua is also extremely performant, which is not always needed in a glue language, but still good to have.
fmajid··on NASA asked several former SR-71A staffers to help secret restart
Fun fact: the US could not produce enough titanium to manufacture them, so the CIA set up shell companies to buy some from the Soviets.
fmajid··on NASA asked several former SR-71A staffers to help secret restart
The US also had two superlative poles of engineering excellence, Kelly Johnson's Skunkworks and Hyman Rickover's nuclear submarines. They've been since replaced by bureaucrats without an ounce of talent.
fmajid··on Tcl/Tk 9.1
I did some Tcl work a quarter century agi, but really if I were in the market for an extension glue language today, I'd reach for Lua first.
fmajid··on The End of a Fair Price: Dynamic Pricing and the Normalization of Gouging
Here's how antitrust was gutted by Robert Bork and the Chicago School:

fmajid··on HomelabFest will be in St. Louis in September 2027
Sounds like fun. I wish there were something like this in the UK. Though we do have some pretty cool events like EMF Camp.
fmajid··on There's a high chance of devices being sold with GrapheneOS preinstalled in 2027
Have you priced a workstation class laptop recently? They’re over $3000 even with a paltry 32GB RAM

Miniaturization costs, and I would expect a flagship phone to cost at least as much as an equivalent CPU/RAM/storage laptop. The cost of miniaturization, modem, camera and OLED more than balances the bigger screen and keyboard/trackpad.

fmajid··on Amazon blocks Meta’s new Muse AI agent from shopping on amazon.com
Amazon’s enterprise value is made up entirely of AWS and Amazon’s advertising business. Thus according to Wall Street their e-commerce is a loss-leader whose only purpose is to provide inventory for ads. Agents shopping on Amazon do not show Amazon ads and are thus antithetical to Amazon’s business model and need to be blocked.
fmajid··on Show HN: Snapdrop: Instantly share files between devices. No setup, no signup
Works just fine on my 10.0.0.0/8
fmajid··on Canada welcomes EU proposal to become 'associate member'
Jacques Attali, former adviser to French president François Mitterrand, wrote about the behind-the-scenes work the "sherpas" do for their principals in his three-volume "Verbatim", which has been translated into English.
fmajid··on Jean-Pierre Serre turns 100
Proving Hardy’s “A Mathematician’s Apology” wrong?
fmajid··on Jean-Pierre Serre turns 100
Cauchy is the one who introduced rigor to calculus with the formalization of limits, including epsilons and deltas, a full century after Leibniz and half a century after Euler.
fmajid··on Temporal raises $550M at a $12.55B valuation
That’s 1/3 what IBM paid for Red Hat, simply insane.
fmajid··on JetKVM Mini
I got mine as a side-effect of ordering the Comet Q on Kickstarter...

There is also the Comet 5G, which gives you cellular backup. I use it to control my OpenBSD home router when traveling if my Internet connection goes down.

fmajid··on JetKVM Mini
The GL-iNet Commet X is a 4-port IP KVM. It does 4K, albeit at 30fps.

https://nascompares.com/2026/06/26/gl-inet-comet-x-kvm-early...

fmajid··on JetKVM Mini
The higher-end GL-iNet Comets have passthrough. I have the 5G cellular equipped one connected to my OpenBSD home router so if I lose Internet connectivity at home while I am traveling, I can still debug and do something about it.
fmajid··on JetKVM Mini
I think that's mostly marketing waffle, but I suspect the argument is that this will allow a LLM or agent to remote control your phone, tablet or computer in a format that is a bit more directly accessible for them than the VNC-like UIs most of this new crop of PiKVM-derived IP KVMs offer.
fmajid··on JetKVM Mini
It is 4K, just not the 120Hz or higher gaming grade the parent was asking for, and better than the 1080p of the JetKVM Mini. The JetKVM Mini does offer Ethernet, however (not sure if it can be powered by PoE, however, which would be a huge plus).

Not high frequency though, tops out at 45Hz

fmajid··on Show HN: Syq – copy files between machines fast (better than rsync)
Multiple connections totally help. At a previous job, we drove rsync with GNU parallel, then did a final catch-all pass with rsync, and that divided transfer time for about 600GB by a factor of 4.
fmajid··on Don't let anyone take away your big box of cables
Also, if you have a heat-sealer, individually bagging the cables before grouping them avoids having cables mate and turn into a Gordian knot. A heat-sealer allows you to make bags that are just the right size for your cable, vs. generic ziplocs.
fmajid··on My Feed, My Way
It's unclear whether this legislation will require giving users the choice of the sort order. That's one of the tricks exploitative social networks use, selective prioritization of ragebait and other content that encourages "engagement". If you have the choice of strict chronological order, that removes a lot of the hold the networks have over you.
fmajid··on The car industry A/B tested selling a car with and without CarPlay
They are not going back to physical controls out of the goodness of their hearts. Physical controls are a requirement to get a European 5-star safety rating, and possibly in China as well.
fmajid··on The car industry A/B tested selling a car with and without CarPlay
Yes, but the Honda to Chevy ratio is accelerating in just 2 years, which suggests something more than a preference for Japanese brands is at play.
