flyingshelf··on Apple caught off guard by AI demand for Mac Mini and Mac Studio
Kinda sad that in 2026 1TB and 62GB of RAM is considered "beefy". We had 1TB iPhones for 5 years.

The only reason for this huge speedbump is that chip makers have been dragging their feet for the last 10 years with "just enough" memory.

flyingshelf··on Hit anything. Discover how it rings
Thanks for this. I'm afraid I'll have to use it every day
flyingshelf··on Why do I lose my passion and want to do nothing?
I don’t think it's the same at all. Nobody is interested in watching computers play against each other, so he still can do what he loves. He didn't suddenly have to work with/through machines now.
flyingshelf··on Why do I lose my passion and want to do nothing?
AI is like being a manager. To someone who was never interested in that, it certainly feels like your new job is not as good.
flyingshelf··on The internet is kind of a predatory cesspit now
Really. I think snake oil sellers were so popular because people believed them. It's no different today.

Today you can recognize snake oil scams, most people can't. Nothing has changed.

Millions of people still fall victims to pyramid schemes and that's not due to the internet.

flyingshelf··on “It works better in the app”
The point of app stores is that they somehow curate the experience. They can't do that if you just ship a bookmark.

Also I don't think web views in most app stores (namely mobile stores) ship an entire browser. As a matter of fact you're literally not allowed to ship browsers in iOS and that's a huge slice of the market on its own.

flyingshelf··on “It works better in the app”
To me the most common issue for apps is that they don't have tabs. Damn we solved this issue in IE7 and I'm still limited to "one window" on my supercomputer-level pocket PC. Inconceivable. I'll keep using the app in the browser.
flyingshelf··on Get your Windows license refund
Sorry but this isn't the 70s. Even businesses expect devices to somewhat work out of the box so it's completely unreasonable to everyone except people who buy things like Raspberry PI, which are a tiny minority.
flyingshelf··on Please stop flooding our projects with AI slop to furnish your CV
My solution is to ask them for proof of work. Many of these disappear after opening a PR that they never tested. How can you claim to have fixed a visual issue without a screenshot? Insta-close.
flyingshelf··on GitHub Outage Tracker: Is GitHub Cooked?
I feel that way for open source and programming in general. I don’t think it's going to be a thing anymore in just a couple of years. Even now I see people already don't look at any of the code they release.
flyingshelf··on Xiaomi: New CPU matches Apple cores single threaded, much faster multithreaded
You forgot the /s
flyingshelf··on iCloud+ Hide My Email addresses will remain on icloud.com
I mean, that is no different than any other provider.

If you want to degoogle, you still have to go to each site and change your staticuser@gmail.com individually.

Most users already do not use custom domains if that's the catch.

flyingshelf··on How Thailand Resisted Colonization
Absolutely this. Thais love saying they've never been colonized, but conveniently forget to mention that 40% of their territory was colonized and permanently lost.
flyingshelf··on France to ban unsolicited telemarketing calls
You're not wrong, but with anything digital it's as easy as moving outside the country.

With the EU being one and many at the same time, all you need is to set up shop in Bulgaria and good luck prosecuting me. I'm actually in Turkmenistan anyway. There's a reason why a lot of scam calls actually come from India.

flyingshelf··on France to ban unsolicited telemarketing calls
It's funny and sad to see polite people run into scammers. I witnessed to a young man being almost unable to keep saying "no" for the 20th time to an insistent seller on a beach.

When it happens to me, they're met with silence or "GTFO" after the 3rd question. I am impolite.

flyingshelf··on France to ban unsolicited telemarketing calls
Essentially useless. My country also banned them and has a "do not call" registry, doesn't stop scammers from calling my phone non-stop.

Also legally speaking all you need is "Check this box if you don't want spam" and the floodgates are open, legally.

You need telco-level detection and blocking. If a cellphone number makes 1000 calls today maybe it's not a real cellphone, is it. Block the calls.

flyingshelf··on The Philippines' big offshoring industry is growing despite AI
What does that have to do with the general state of the whole industry? "Scamming" rarely falls into proper "jobs" anyway.
flyingshelf··on Lost my phone at the office. Claude suggested tracking Bluetooth signal strength
50K users isn't a lot. To me you're just one of those "bring the old Y back" users who will eventually forget that "the old Y" isn't worth it anymore.

Anyway, yes, surely "search" will exist the same way RSS exists.

flyingshelf··on I made tinnitus my friend, then it disappeared [video]
I read this a lot. My explanation is that it does not cause it but it does place you in silent environment (via noise cancellation) more often than you're used to, and that's exactly where you're likely to notice your existing tinnitus.

If you live in a noisy place, your noise levels might be high enough that you never even get the chance to notice it. AC alone might be enough to cover it if it's little.

flyingshelf··on Lost my phone at the office. Claude suggested tracking Bluetooth signal strength
What's google search?

The product as we know it is effectively dead. There is no future in which the URL bar isn't just an AI chat input. It's up to the model to search for you, if it decides that's the fastest way to an answer.

flyingshelf··on Don't be a meat proxy
To be fair this mostly happens on my OSS repos where I'm bombarded by junk AI PRs by people who never bother to actually read and talk like a human. So I scold them, block them and close everything they open.
flyingshelf··on Don't be a meat proxy
I guarantee that the major players will offer straight-to-CEO interfaces where the user provides ALL info and AI will proceed to orchestrate the entire company, from finances to deployment. We're screwed, without protection.
flyingshelf··on The myth of Snow Leopard
Any change is a breaking change. The release cleaned things up, this inevitably led to deprecated parts being dropped and unwanted/undefined/outdated behavior being changed.

Just because it's marked as "no feature" it doesn't mean it was a "no user changes" release.

flyingshelf··on Don't be a meat proxy
Here's my plan: <proceeds to pasted well-formatted output straight out of ChatGPT>

It's gotten to a point where if I see valid `code` in responses I assume it's AI junk output and I scold the commenter.

flyingshelf··on Don't be a meat proxy
You guys are using protection?
flyingshelf··on How the words we teach English language learners changed
It's kinda funny. My life switched to English when I was around 18 and, while my family still speaks my native language exclusively, everything I've learned since then I don't know how to say it in my native language.

Just earlier I was talking to them, trying to say "when life gives you lemons" and being unable to find an equivalent phrase. I hope they understood my lemons reference regardless.

flyingshelf··on Disrupting supply chain attacks on NPM and GitHub Actions
Keys can be reused from anywhere. Trusted publishing means the attacker must trigger the specific workflow on GitHub, which is more difficult and leaves trace of actions on GitHub itself.
flyingshelf··on Future euro banknote design proposals
IGP? They should put European cheese on it. Fresh notes would have to smell like their picture, by law.

Dad, can I have a Gorgonzola 20?

Best I can do is a Casu Marzu 5.

flyingshelf··on Future euro banknote design proposals
Faces and buildings objectively make for ugly currency. Birds are somewhat okay, they disregard borders. I would have preferred more varied fauna or flora.

Just take a look at Maldive's currency and tell me that this proposal isn't terribly boring.

flyingshelf··on Future euro banknote design proposals
Could be that they lack details at this point, but I rate them all from trash to less-trash. Switzerland has had some outstanding bills forever right in the center of Europe, but the EU comes out with this uninspired garbage.
