flying_kangaroo··on Southwest Airlines now available on Google Flights
I used to give preference to Southwest for cross-country (US) flights, partly because of availability on particular routes, but over other direct flights because of the boarding experience. For $15-20 (not sure what it is now) I could pay for the automated check-in and be near-guaranteed a seat in the A group that was better, for cheaper, than trying to get an equivalent seat at an airline where they were picked ahead of time.
flying_kangaroo··on Adult Obesity Facts
The way I've heard it, BMI can be inaccurate on the individual level, but it was created to analyze populations more broadly, where it can be a somewhat useful heuristic. I would guess athletes with obese BMIs are a small enough portion of the population to not make too much of a change to the population-wide statistics.
flying_kangaroo··on Reading in the Age of Constant Distraction
If that's how we're looking at it, wouldn't that be the same essential idea as leaving a bookmark and juggling a few books at once?
flying_kangaroo··on Cal Newport on Why We'll Look Back at Our Smartphones Like Cigarettes
If you do a search across his blog there's various articles touching on different parts. Here's one such:

flying_kangaroo··on Ask HN: What can we do about spam calls with spoofed numbers?
At a minimal level, Apple also provides a do-not-disturb mode that ignores everything but calls from contacts that you specifically add to your "favorites" list.
flying_kangaroo··on How Restaurants Got So Loud
This reads like advice for how to train a cat and I would feel kinda weird doing it to a child. Is this actually effective?
flying_kangaroo··on Americans are changing their relationship with Facebook
The counterpoint to your potential Instagram downfall is that "kids these days" are making "Finsta" accounts, or fake accounts that they only add their close friends to, so they can post things they don't want the family seeing. Facebook tries very hard to enforce people using their real names, something that Instagram doesn't need to do.
flying_kangaroo··on France bans smartphone use in schools
"Back in your day," were you allowed to just pull out a newspaper in the middle of class and read it? I find that doubtful.
flying_kangaroo··on Want More Time? Get Rid of the Easiest Way to Spend It
This reminds me of all those subreddits of people asking how to quit reddit :). There's been periods where I don't check HN much at all for a few months, but I notice that when I "stop checking these specific time-sinks" that really just treats a symptom and I still waste a good amount of time, just on other sites. The only real way to quit is to be intentional about what, specifically, you want to fill the regained time with. I don't have any studies handy, so this may just be conjecture rather than actual science (as if anything else exists online), but it's often easier to make a "positive habit" such as reading 20 more minutes per day than a negative habit like "don't check HN".
flying_kangaroo··on ‘I Fundamentally Believe That My Time at Reddit Made the World a Worse Place’
/r/popular will come close to it, and includes a level of customization based on your general location (as the default front page does).
flying_kangaroo··on TV advertising has hit a wall thanks to streaming options like Netflix
You could even have the commentators take a break during tv timeouts, and just have some chill crowd shots. Maybe get some teams on board to show what they'd do on jumbotrons during the breaks in action.
flying_kangaroo··on TV advertising has hit a wall thanks to streaming options like Netflix
If it helps you understand, originally cable tv was a way to pay for tv (as opposed to free OTA) that then had no ads, almost like how HBO operates today. Of course, that could only last for so long.
flying_kangaroo··on Cancer Doctors Cite Risks of Drinking Alcohol
calories in vs. calories out in around 99% of cases.
flying_kangaroo··on Reddit raises $200M at a $1.8B valuation
From what I remember it was mostly too many advertisers trying to push their accounts/products to the front page and killing a lot of the user-generated content people wanted.

Helped that reddit was primed and ready as exactly the site the migrators were looking for. We don't quite have the same alternatives ready to go rn.

flying_kangaroo··on Southwest to Stop Overbooking as United Uproar Echoes
The seat upgrade procedure is pretty nice. $20 for priority boarding on southwest vs. multiple times that for a "economy deluxe" seat on other airlines? Sign me up.
flying_kangaroo··on Reddit’s April Fools’ experiment
On the flip side, however, reddit is (as of today on Alexa) the 4th most visited site in the US. Given that user-base, I think a lot of internet users have noticed this.
flying_kangaroo··on Introducing Netflix Stethoscope
Can't have people watching two streams on the same computer. Common sense or something.
flying_kangaroo··on U.S. motor vehicle deaths see biggest two year jump in over 50 years, per NSC
I'd say "is" rather than "could become", personally.
flying_kangaroo··on Why Nerds Are Unpopular (2003)
I thought 21 Jump Street hit the nail on the head w.r.t. (modern?) high schools, a lot of the most popular kids in that movie were also the smart, "nerdy" types. Could be a regional thing though, who knows.
flying_kangaroo··on Ōryōki Web Browser
Until a few years ago, Chromium was built on top of WebKit, then had a falling out with Apple / Safari and we got Blink.
flying_kangaroo··on Is Facebook eavesdropping on phone conversations?
On the flip-side, (again, anecdotal sample-size-1) I've noticed a definite improvement in battery life after uninstalling the app, and I definitely don't needs any of Facebook's notifications to propagate through via the app.
flying_kangaroo··on The software engineer’s guide to asserting dominance in the workplace
It's the most helpful advice in the article.
flying_kangaroo··on Programming by poking: why MIT stopped teaching SICP
Not OP but also had to write my own shell, as well as the kernel APIs for forking and whatnot. The kernel APIs are definitely interesting, but I think the biggest dopamine rush was once the way to parse and structure commands "clicked" and suddenly shells made a whole lot of sense.
flying_kangaroo··on Ask HN: How did you learn about stocks and the market?
tbh I read it as "commuted" anyways. The human brain is quite the work of art.
flying_kangaroo··on How Much Does a Website Cost?
Cool site, would be nice to see a breakdown of how much each answer contributed to the final estimate, though (unless I missed something on the last page).
flying_kangaroo··on Forbes Site, After Begging You Turn Off Adblocker, Serves Up Malware 'Ads'
Ad networks don't want to trust publishers to accurately report page hits with inline images, they also would presumably like to be able to track users and serve up "tailored" ads, which they can't really do if they don't get any information on the user before serving the ad.
flying_kangaroo··on Randall Munroe, XKCD Creator, Goes Back to High School
Good old clickbait titles. Gotta love 'em.
flying_kangaroo··on Why a city should not build a stadium for an NFL team
> There's an order of magnitude fewer NFL games compared to the NBA, MLB, or NHL

Strongly agree. I've tried many a time to 'get into' baseball, but every day is just way too much. It also tends to increase the importance of each individual game, which (ignoring the quasi-nihilistic "it's just a sport, man") is another reason for the popularity.

flying_kangaroo··on Reflecting on Haskell in 2015
From what I've heard, MIT does the same thing with CS101, except in Scheme. Starting the curriculum that way seems like a good idea (in the long run, since internships and whatnot all want Java or C++/C#), between leveling the playing field and providing a foundation on a lot of the "math" that CS is based on.
flying_kangaroo··on The Secret Power of ‘Read It Later’ Apps
A lot of heavy powerlifting programs have a few minutes rest between sets, which while not great for longform, does allow for a minute or two reading once your heartrate comes down a tad
