fluxic··on Like startups, most intentional communities fail. Why?
While I think anti-capitalist communes are as hopeless as the author portrays, communes of likeminded individuals have been successful. Consider the Chelsea Hotel in NYC. In addition to being the cornerstone of NYC's art scene for 100+ years, it also contributed to billions of dollars in value creation. [0] The hotel was intended to be a community for artists from the start, and by every measure it was successful.

A few factors that made the community successful:

— Residents still had jobs

— Residents were expected to pay (very low) rent

— Residents had a lot of leeway if they missed their rent

— Residents were generally selected for their likemindedness/talent

— Residents stayed at the hotel for a good stretch of time, fostering a sense of community

— Short-term tourists and wealthy patrons helped keep the rest of the community afloat (like many of these communes)

— It was in Manhattan, not the middle of nowhere

I think it's still remarkably possible to create successful intentional communities. However, I think that being isolated with 100 people in the middle of Indiana is probably less tolerable (in the long term) than living in a communal hotel with 100 people while still living in an exciting city. It's less incestuous that way, and you're constantly being invigorated by new ideas from your next-door neighbours.

Can't recommend David Sylvester's interviews with Francis Bacon enough. Brilliant book, even if you're not a fan of the painter.

Lots of exceptions to the rule though. This startup just raised a massive (private) round: http://mashable.com/2017/02/02/hater-dating-app/

It's also industry parlance for when a startup hires a rival's employee, no?

fluxic··on Show HN: Poacher – Helping your startup poach their next hire
Hey HN! I'm Joe. I'm a freelance copywriter and I'm often hired by startups (and their employees) to write better job descriptions, job ads, and cover letters.

I imagined this as a fun tool to help early-stage startups get the attention of their rivals' employees. I use a mixture of targeted FB ads, funny emails, Snapchat filters, and some other fun methods in order to help get the attention of people you want to hire.

The main value of a tool like this is 1) having better copy, since most job descriptions are dreadfully boring and un-enticing, 2) it's one of the few ways to court people who already have jobs, and 3) I think many people would prefer someone at arm's length handling the dark arts of poaching.

Let me know what you think!

ALSO: if you’re an individual looking to be “poached”, I will write you a cover letter for free (up to 10 people on HN). As a copywriter, I’ve written many of my friends’ and helped improve their salaries by $100,000s. Just comment here with your email and I’ll be in touch :)

fluxic··on Snapchat will file for IPO next week
Fair point!
fluxic··on Snapchat will file for IPO next week
Current valuations:

- Facebook: $350B

- Twitter: $15.7B

- Snapchat (projected): $20-25B

- IAC (owns Tinder): $5.45B

Interesting (and probably appropriate) that the market is pricing Snapchat closer to Twitter.

To be fair, The Ringer is a pretty big outlier. "Have Bill Simmons tweet every article we post" isn't really a replicable business model.

fluxic··on The Future of DoorDash Is Turning Delivery Into a Platform
You're not stupid! Uber is less vulnerable than DD (mainly because their margins are higher). But it's still a cost-intensive business. Subsidies, local offices, marketing, it adds up. For reference, see [0], although Uber sold their Chinese business to a competitor soon after that article was published.

Also, equity = shares in Uber. Debt = loans. You have less liability when you take somebody's money in exchange for a % of the company, than when you take somebody's money and guarantee you'll pay it back + interest ;)

fluxic··on The Future of DoorDash Is Turning Delivery Into a Platform
Honestly: not surprised. The margins on DoorDash were way too slim to ever make the unit economics work. "Customers are used to paying $30 to Uber across the city — but very few will pay $30 to Uber their sandwich." [0]

fluxic··on Stripe has raised $150M more at a $9B valuation
Fun to see the rivalry between Stripe and Square play out. This line though has me a little puzzled, however:

>"On the flip side, Square is more diversified, generating revenue from non-payment products such as its Square Capital lending business and Caviar restaurant-delivery operation."

Isn't Caviar widely known for being a massive money-loser for Square?

fluxic··on What.CD is shutting down
Do you think Spotify played a role in supporting the French police?

What.cd was an incredibly potent force for disseminating leaks. One can reasonably suspect that the closure of What.cd will slow the velocity of music piracy, and give more power to streamers/labels when it comes to marketing a new release.
