flippinburgers··on Docker Is Four Things
This is a hilarious comment because windows ignored the developer experience for YEARS with its horrible command line experience. Windows was a regression. Linux/unix, which powers the world by the way, is where it is at regardless of how old its foundations are.
flippinburgers··on How to find time to learn after work (2017)
I found the person who doesn't have kids.

Nothing about helping someone better understand something is cheating. Helping your own child? That is just natural. I find what you said revolting.

flippinburgers··on Show HN: Going into freshman year, figured I should build an interpreter
This kid has plenty of time to dive into other languages. C is a great choice.
flippinburgers··on Google co-founder Sergey Brin on leaving retirement to work on AI
Paywalled so I will not attempt to read but the first little bit... Just makes me imagine what it must be like to be one of these elite engineer types at insanely luxurious parties talking to "experts" all day long and I have to take a hard look in the mirror and wonder why my life is such ... s***.
flippinburgers··on Ask HN: Should I give up trying to be a founder?
You make it sound so ... unaccomplished ... to just reach out and get a high paying "easy" job. Do they exist?

I have yet to find an "easy" high paying job. I've been stuck in the $50K~75K range my entire 17 year career. So maybe realize for a split second that there are many, many people making much less, experiencing much worse.

flippinburgers··on An introduction to metaprogramming in Ruby
Is this what passes for an article about metaprogramming in ruby?

Using send is extremely common especially when mocking private methods in rspec. I guess I am speaking from a rails lense, but what other lense is there for ruby development?

I am forever stuck in a world where "articles" aren't something you read in less than a minute.

flippinburgers··on LazyVim
Now that lsp is a first class citizen in neovim is very usable with little modification.

It will never be a ctrl+p install away from feature X system though. You do have to put some effort in.

flippinburgers··on 6 days to change 1 line of code (2015)
Working on codebases - like rails without rubocop - is not something I would like to consider. There is already too much variability in how people code.
flippinburgers··on Who employs your doctor? Increasingly, a private equity firm
Regarding burnout I know individuals in the medical field who wish they could control their schedules by reducing the number of clients per day, but they simply are not allowed to because leadership expects them to turn certain levels of profit.
flippinburgers··on COSMIC DE: Desktop environment created for Pop!_OS and other Linux distros
I use pop os and for some nearly insanity level reason highlighting is VERY janky. It often looses focus, switches the start point, completely becomes unavailable, and generally has nearly driven me to go insane.

Maybe it is my mouse but I kinda doubt it.

flippinburgers··on A Japanese factory that designs clothes on a 40-year-old computer [video]
This is really beautiful.
flippinburgers··on More than 75% of Steam games tested are playable or verified on the Steam Deck
I love it. In fact I haven't turned on my PC with the intent to play games since I bought the deck. I highly recommend it particularly if you have a busy schedule and want to be able to jump in and out of a game once in a while.
flippinburgers··on Get a personal teacher
Self evaluating in this way really can push someone to the next level in a skill they are trying to learn! It seems especially effective when learning an instrument.
flippinburgers··on Supreme Court strikes down affirmative action in college admissions
The reasons? Racism.
flippinburgers··on Supreme Court strikes down affirmative action in college admissions
Sounds good to me.
flippinburgers··on Ignoring boys' emotional needs fuels public health risks
So you are opting out because you perceive others as doing something wrong. Ok.

Having a child necessitates raising the child. Rather simple.

flippinburgers··on Gopher Wrangling: Effective error handling in Go
Man I definitely handle errors the "wrong way" in almost all go code I have written. I take a "log immediately with filename and line number" approach. For me, it works. For teams maybe not. For large codebases with a bunch of 'I am a "programmer" (because it makes me loads of cash) individuals', it is definitely not a good idea. It requires discipline. Personally I hate stack traces.
flippinburgers··on Dating, education, and sex ratios
I have a younger sibling who is much younger than me. I would have to disagree and say that they are hypersensitive about conflicting opinions to the point that it could destroy a relationship to have an argument about the wrong subject.
flippinburgers··on In praise of blowing up your life
As if.
flippinburgers··on In praise of blowing up your life
I have to agree. For those people who have loving families that they can work with - realizing that EVERYONE has differences of opinion - staying near family is the single best thing you can do. You can have kids. Those kids can be around your parents and siblings and other relatives. Honestly it is true living. All else gravitates towards being too self centered.
flippinburgers··on In praise of blowing up your life
Uh. Ok so one groups rate of successful suicide is more important than the others. Gotcha. At least we can agree that it is an epidemic among white middle aged men.
flippinburgers··on Researchers treat depression by reversing brain signals traveling the wrong way
I have had what seems to me to be depression for most of my life (40+ years). I have been fortunate enough to have a kid and, now, I guess I just don't have time to be depressed or something because most of my thoughts of ending life etc have, quite thankfully, gone away. I'm really not trying to be off-putting when I say this but I do sometimes wonder if some instances of depression aren't simply a cause of people not having families. I'm not totally confident about this, but ... really I think having kids gets looked down on for all the wrong reasons and maybe our deepest drives are all tied to having them.
flippinburgers··on My 20 year career is technical debt or deprecated
I don't know what this means about my personal (in-)ability but I've been developing for years (15+) and I feel like all of the other developers I have to deal with are constantly turning to weird, convoluted solutions to problems. I have also never been able to get past the first step in the google interview process so I have this deep, frustrated insecurity. And people constantly like to point out how simple my stuff is in a tone that suggests that is a bad thing.

My hatred of the complex solutions is so deep that I just suffer through all of the commentary silently.

flippinburgers··on My 20 year career is technical debt or deprecated
I cannot dislike "clean architecture" enough.
flippinburgers··on Dell goes back on WFH pledge, forces employees to come back to the office
It wastes time. It wastes fuel. WFH actually does work: there is this new fangled thingy called the internets that is a series of tubes which distributes things oh so magically.

But certain management types feel great knowing that their drones are being good little drones.

flippinburgers··on What is permaculture? (2015)
True. It is vastly larger than gardening which in and of itself is rather more complex than mowing a lawn.
flippinburgers··on Writing: Good career move, terrible career (2018)
Let us evaluate. You work at Google. On encryption. And have the time and energy to write books on the side and you don't consider yourself an outlier? Please...
flippinburgers··on What is permaculture? (2015)
Lol ok we will have to agree to disagree about what makes a good garden. A well kept garden requires daily work, planning, determining crop rotation, and many other things that go way way beyond mowing a lawn.
flippinburgers··on Ask HN: It's 2023, how do you choose between MySQL and Postgres?
By choosing Postgres. Next!
flippinburgers··on What is permaculture? (2015)
Nit: there is definitely more effort involved in gardening than in mowing a lawn.
