flippinburgers··on American IQ scores have rapidly dropped, proving the 'Reverse Flynn effect'
They can make fluffy, borderline poetic phrases like "qualitative descriptions of the color red" that, frankly, mean nothing. Emotional sure, but the actual quality of a color is its wavelength for instance.
flippinburgers··on Animal Sex Determination Is Weirder Than You Think
To be sterile is to be broken but it doesn't reduce ones humanity.
flippinburgers··on Animal Sex Determination Is Weirder Than You Think
The fact of the matter is that if someone is missing a leg they are absolutely human but they are broken nonetheless.
flippinburgers··on Animal Sex Determination Is Weirder Than You Think
You say all that but nonetheless most people fall into two categories.
flippinburgers··on Animal Sex Determination Is Weirder Than You Think
Messy edge cases doesn't mean let's just throw everything away.

The exception is not the rule.
flippinburgers··on Displaying My Washing Machine's Remaining Time with Curl, Jq, and Pizauth
I would also like this (well I want something entirely mechanical with no software at all) but short of people designing entirely open and 3d printable versions on their own time, this will never happen.

Well maybe with ChatGPT 6...

Birds are not mammals. Fish are not mammals. Mammals on the other hand have males that impregnate the females.
flippinburgers··on Virtual Threads Arrive in JDK 21, Ushering a New Era of Concurrency
Not fear. Disgust.
flippinburgers··on Virtual Threads Arrive in JDK 21, Ushering a New Era of Concurrency
The top level comment is someone gushing over Java so perhaps Java advocates bring this on themselves?
flippinburgers··on Lawsuit: Tesla must be punished for “tasteless” sharing of car-camera images
Tesla is the reason that EVs are even going anywhere. The amount of foot dragging by car companies was frustrating to watch for years on end.

Have you met, for instance, the "clean architecture" paradigm? No there are definitely patterns that will be used by developers which end up getting in the way of the intent of the code, making it harder to reason about and maintain over time.

The example that I had to deal with most recently used a "clean architecture" approach in an api. The incoming calls went through three layers of redundant code - of which each layer had its own set of unit tests - before hitting the db and then passing up the response back through the stack.

It deeply annoys me to have to deal with people who have some pattern like this that they read about and, I assume mostly due to its relative obscurity, they feel ... smart? ... when applying it and forcing whomever comes after to deal with it.

To say that I want to viciously rip out the redundant layers is an understatement.

flippinburgers··on A trick to reaching flow: Leave your work broken
In almost every case that I find myself working on something "hard" stepping away, losing focus, and then thinking periodically about the problem leads to higher levels of clarity.
flippinburgers··on Bob Lee, former CTO of Square, has died after being stabbed in San Francisco
Rational individuals apparently.
flippinburgers··on We need a more sophisticated debate about AI
Those safety nets are not enough to live on for a family.

Are we really worried about elderly revolting?

I think there is a balance but yeah it isn't good if no record of "where we are" exists.

What is your measure of interesting? Of "medium" sized? Go probably compiles 15K lines/sec.
flippinburgers··on SpaceX moves Starship to launch site, and liftoff could be just days away
It so strongly resembles something seen in a film that I have to agree with you. That being said, I don't doubt it is real.

flippinburgers··on 75% of the Most Played Games on Steam Are Playable on the Steam Deck
It is an awesome piece of hardware. Got mine during the recent sale and play on it almost every night. So quick to wake! Sleep at the touch of a button! Great catalogue of games. Too good and well done Valve!
flippinburgers··on Turmoil at ‘Chief’ raises the question: is empowering corporate women enough?
Religiosity at its finest!

Nothing better than a presumptuous "you are guilty because of your skin color" assessment of a group of people.

Your use of the word gender is effectively "personality". Yes people have different personalities.

Yes XX is a woman and YY is a man. Mammals require one of each to reproduce. Creating a clear, simple definition is what science is supposed to do so that we can better understand existence.

When a woman can no longer have kids she has gone through menopause or had a genetic aberration that prevented her from doing so.

Yes there are bell curves within nature. This doesn't change chromosomes.

No I would not agree that hormones received from an external source make one male or female. If I color my skin green, my skin is still not green. I have simply made it appear that way.

flippinburgers··on I lost everything that made me love my job through Midjourney
There is nothing stopping companies from offering AI oriented apis. If they no longer have to develop a frontend but just have a "here is our logo" etc endpoint, then... goodbye react! Goodbye FE developers! And at that point AI will probably be developing the very endpoints that it consumes.

Honestly it doesn't sound crazy to me.

flippinburgers··on I lost everything that made me love my job through Midjourney
Naively positive. People whose jobs are outpaced by technology end up working "dead end" jobs that nobody else wants or fall into poverty if they are not lucky enough to be able to retire. Turning around in your 40s, 50s, or 60s to find new employment in a new field? This is exceptionally challenging.
flippinburgers··on NPR cancels 4 podcasts amid major layoffs
You don't deserve the downvotes.

Men and women have different chromosomes. They have different skeletal structures. They have different amounts of hormones. They have different averages.

Women can have children. Men cannot.

The fact that people are trying to argue otherwise is frankly insane.

flippinburgers··on How to start a React Project in 2023
Flux? Javascript has been "fluxing" for almost 30 years. Unpleasant chaos has to become your friend.

It is really unappealing and driven by "smart" people.

1. The "tutorials" are terrible. 2. The tooling - webpack etc - is terrible. 3. Things change too quickly. 4. There are an absurd number of technical layers trying to make frontend "safe" like backend EG typescript.

I like react as long as I am the only author involved. All the FE devs I've been forced to work with pull in an asinine number of external dependencies, weave painfully elaborate webpack setups, among many other things. I can't stand it.

flippinburgers··on Managers exploit loyal workers over less committed colleagues
A clever manager would never question but talk about how something looks like a true challenge and just leave it at that.
flippinburgers··on Managers exploit loyal workers over less committed colleagues
This is hilarious in part because I see it in myself.
