flipchart··on When did Americans lose their British accents?
That's only one of the English accents in SA. There are many others including an RP-like accent (which I and my friends use), the Cape Coloured accent, and the accent which most of the country's people use (as seen initially in this video https://youtu.be/KfIvbVLuCh8?t=3)
flipchart··on YC and Ginkgo Bioworks announce new partnership for synthetic biology startups
I'm curious what happened to the YC bio [1] track which was announced in 2018 with free lab space and a different investment deal. The details seem to have been scrubbed from the YC website. Did it get shut down? Seems like it was Sam's initiative and didn't survive his departure.

flipchart··on Clubhouse announces new collaboration tool, free project management platform
Have you added the field to the issue screen? By default it's not there, and if there's no points, it won't show unless you click the edit button. But I use Jira and can edit estimates on the issue screen
flipchart··on Stripe Capital
Makes sense. It's a very natural progression especially with Square offering the same to its customers. I'm actually surprised it took them this long.
flipchart··on Ask HN: What collaboration software does your team use?
I've used mostly email for messaging, skype for talking, Jira for development work and MS Word for planning/documenting. Not a big fan of Slack, preferring a quick email or a call for longer discussions (or preferably in person chat, but I'm currently remote).

Haven't been happy with Jira for a long time so decided to start thinking about what a replacement would look like. Created https://tasks.withcomb.com as a placeholder to see if others are interested.

But in my research I've come across ClickUp & Clubhouse for project management. Never used Confluence, and while I don't really know what it does beyond being a documentation site/wiki, I'm pretty happy with Word to type up requirements & GDrive/dropbox/OneDrive to share with the team.

flipchart··on Show HN: H1-B problems? Check your eligibility to move to Canada
Really need a back button for this. I don't so much want to know if I qualify, but what do I need to do to qualify which means some of my answers change
flipchart··on A new look, logo, and website for Fastmail
Pretty uncommon in the Netherlands. Yes you can get one, but most people here don't have one, possibly due to very few merchants accepting them, and when they do, they pass the CC fees to the consumer
flipchart··on Facebook is redesigning its core app
Instagram is doing the same thing from the activity feed. Clicking on a like/comment/mention from there takes you only to the comments section, so you can't see what image the thread is taking place on

flipchart··on Things I Learned from Chris Dixon about Startups (2015)
Just finished reading a book called "The Mom Test" by Rob Fitzpatrick. The central idea of the book is to get you to ask the right questions, because if you ask people questions like "how am I doing", friendly people will tell you "yay" because they don't want to hurt your feelings, while assholes who want to appear like gurus will tell you "nay" to bolster their own notions of being a startup soothsayer.

Highly recommend it. It's short (yay!) and very practical and changes the way you think about questioning people.

No affiliation, just like the book

flipchart··on Show HN: Comb – an issue tracker that focuses on prioritizing
> From a quick glance this seems to be a tool that helps with the task prioritization and distribution.

That's correct. It's similar to Jira and Trello, but instead of letting people have free roam on what task they work on, the system assigns them work according to the prioritized task list.

> What are the other 2 icons for? The other 2 are Bitbucket & GitLab.

> but I believe this could work very well in other businesses too It is definitely applicable to a wide variety of audiences. I focused on SW devs because that's my background, and I thought that focusing on a single market would allow me to better communicate the message. But it seems I've got some work to do anyway

I've had a lot of trouble trying to articulate the value that Comb brings. I'm not sure if it's because I'm trying to make it look too much like marketing fluff. Do you think that more specific examples would help?

Thanks for all the feedback! It's really valuable

flipchart··on .NET on Linux – bye, Windows 10
Doesn't work in Home edition (edit: the group policy editor is not available). Cheaper laptops (which are still fine for lighter web dev) come with Home edition so there are a few people (me at least) who do have to live with the forced updates

flipchart··on I’m Joining Stripe to Work on Atlas
For South Africans it's more complex: we literally are not (legally) allowed to charge in any currency except ZAR (our local currency). When you're a small bootstrapped startup on the bottom of the world, charging in a relatively unknown currency doesn't sit well with international customers

Honest question, why do you need another separate dongle just for 3G/4G/LTE when you can simply use your phone's hotspot option and use the network there?
flipchart··on Show HN: CrushPaper – Open-Source Workflowy and Evernote for Writers, Students
OneNote already does this (at least the desktop version does). I also really like the web clipper bookmark to send the whole page to OneNote
flipchart··on Adimab Investors Happy with No-Exit Strategy (2013)
> Investors in Adimab LLC, which makes platform technology for antibody drug discovery, may never see a traditional exit from the company–and they couldn’t be happier about it.

I haven't seen this sort of practice in the software tech scene. Are there any software companies funded in this way, or is it restricted to industries which are traditionally allowed to be slower moving?

flipchart··on Temporary fork enables Node.js to optionally use the Chakra JavaScript engine
I wasn't aware that Chakra could be used standalone in this manner. I had assumed that it was tightly bundled to IE. Is this new?

flipchart··on Proposal for Async Functions for ECMAScript
I'm amazed to see C# (async/await) syntax being used as a Javascript proposal. While I love C#, I didn't think it got much love from too many other people because of people's attitude towards Microsoft and the C# community. I personally use async/await all over my code, so it will be great to use the same syntax in JS despite the fact that we can use yield/generator to achieve the same thing and the syntax is still very similar to async/await
flipchart··on Wallaby.js – An intelligent test runner that continuously runs your tests
Both Visual Studio (from Microsoft) and WebStorm (from JetBrains) give you JS intellisense. Granted, JS intellesense is never going to give you as much information as a statically typed language, but Typescript helps the editor as does comment type-hinting in VS (using something along the lines of JSDoc)
flipchart··on Wallaby.js – An intelligent test runner that continuously runs your tests
I also missed that at first, and was disappointed. Hopefully the pricing will be reasonable enough because I'm very excited about this - just waiting on VS integration

flipchart··on Google Adds Song Lyrics to Top of Search Results,Points Searchers to Google Play
This feels like the same vein as Microsoft abusing it's monopoly to distribute IE in the 90s. I don't know what Microsoft's market share was back then (seems around 75% according to [1]), but Google's is around 68% [2] at the moment which puts them in a pretty good position to drive traffic wherever they feel like. Some might say this is their prerogative, but the same argument could have been made for Microsoft back then. Since Bing is doing the same thing[3], we have the two major search engines both potentially killing off song lyric sites and the businesses behind them. Whether this is ok or not is not as interesting as where all these structured data additions will take us. Will it see the death of curated content sites (like the lyric sites) in favor of the search behemoths having their own content databases, or will we see a resurgence of these sorts of sites with new ways to discover them?

flipchart··on Containers for Windows
Yeah, this page[1] outright admits that it is virtualization, not containerization. I'd rather wait for the next version of Windows which will have true built in containerization and will work with Docker
