flaviojuvenal··on User experience design for APIs
Related, but shameless plug, my PyCon 2017 talk "How to make a good library API" is also about the "API as UI" concept: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4mkFfce46zE

There's also a Django-specific version called "Your Django app is a User Interface": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mnzvjn1v1CY

flaviojuvenal··on Netflix Replacing Star Ratings With Thumbs Ups and Thumbs Down
But the UX of the current rating system sucks. Rating stars are very small and you have to hover them to know you can rate. Only if you watch a movie to the very end you will see a clearer rating functionality, but even then you have few seconds to use.

I bet many new users don't even know they can rate. I wonder if people aren't rating much because the UX sucks, not because it's a 5-star system.

flaviojuvenal··on Study reveals substantial evidence of holographic universe
IANAPhysicist, but I think T-duality in String Theory [1] also makes distances "illusory".

"If string theory is a correct theory of Nature, then this implies that on some deep level, the separation between large vs. small distance scales in physics is not a fixed separation but a fluid one, dependent upon the type of probe we use to measure distance, and how we count the states of the probe." [2]

Brian Greene also explains why in an accessible way in the Chapter 10 of The Elegant Universe [3], which I recommend.

> They don't go to the grocery store for social interaction

Not true for my grandmother and many other elderly people. Maybe it's loneliness. But maybe it's a generation thing, not sure. We need to question if it's best to not interact with people who sell us stuff.

flaviojuvenal··on OpenAI Universe
Related but slightly off-topic, there is a great sci-fi story by Ted Chiang (the same author who made the story behind Arrival film) about humans raising AIs in an artificial world. The premise is that if we want AIs to act like humans, we must teach them like we teach humans: http://subterraneanpress.com/magazine/fall_2010/fiction_the_...
flaviojuvenal··on Quantum Gravity’s Time Problem
I'm also not a physicist, but as far as I understood special relativity and also according to this [1] Quora answer, the speed of light is same in every frame of reference, so the universe compensates variations in speed by dilating time. This is also consistent with Maxwell's equations [2].

flaviojuvenal··on Uganda is shutting down schools funded by Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates
While I completely believe this story, makes no sense to talk about "African courts" in general. AFAIK Uganda and Nigeria are countries far from each other, with different forms of government and even different ethnic groups.

flaviojuvenal··on Subtracting large floating point numbers in different languages
You can use Decimal built-in also:

In [1]: from decimal import Decimal as D
  In [2]: D('9999999999999999.0') - D('9999999999999998.0')
  Out[2]: Decimal('1.0')
From docs: Decimal “is based on a floating-point model which was designed with people in mind, and necessarily has a paramount guiding principle – computers must provide an arithmetic that works in the same way as the arithmetic that people learn at school.”

flaviojuvenal··on Django React/Redux Base Project
It's been less than 6 months I first heard about Redux. Looking at its issues, it seems to be a little more than 1 year old. Now everyone is talking about MobX. Why not improving Redux in first place? If it's verbose, why not writing more abstractions on top of it to make it easier to use? IMHO we should think more about those questions before writing another framework-of-the-day.
flaviojuvenal··on Facebook Ordered to Stop Collecting Data on WhatsApp Users in Germany
Here is the reference. It's the text of one of judicial decisions that blocked Whatsapp in Brazil (translated to English): https://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=auto&tl=en&u...

The relevant part is: "the other company, based in the country, has no "powers" on the company of your own conglomerate".

Note: in the same paragraph it says "a company does not have established in Germany". It's a Translator bug. The correct is: "one company is not established in the country".

Meat is not a luxury in Recife, one of the cities mentioned in the article. Here, even low income families eat meat every day, despite being low quality meat. Red meat is more expensive, but chicken is very common.
flaviojuvenal··on Show HN: jQuery.pin – a plugin for making stuff stick
Why would you want a function called "callback" polluting you global namespace?

What you suggest makes no sense in Javascript. Variable functions allow the developer to simulate namespacing in JS without polluting the global namespace.
