flakeoil··on Nissan's third generation e-POWER powertrain
There is no electricity in Tokyo?
flakeoil··on Can I opt out of my input or output data being used for training?
What they say is not the same as what they wrote in the ToS you didn't read.

If they stole your stuff and used in to train their model, what does it help if there is a lawsuit some years later which you most likely have no benefit from?

flakeoil··on Oceans hit highest temperature on record
I think this talk about 1.5C or 2C degree increase is confusing and make the issue look less alarming.

Firstly this is a global average, including both land and ocean temperature. The land temperatures will increase much more than the ocean temperatures and the oceans cover a higher surface. So with a 2C incease on average globally could mean 6-8 degrees more on land on average. And we are also talking about averages and globally at the same time. So at specific instances and specific places it will get even warmer, say 10-20 degrees during days or weeks.

So GIEC, researchers, magazines and others should more clearly describe what this means and stop talking about these 1.5C and 2C degree increases and instead talk about how much warmer it will be on land or some other more useful measure.

flakeoil··on Thanks to social media, canned sardines are a scarcity on the supermarket shelf
Agree. Today a dude in their underwear can compose whatever they want from their bedroom without any team discussion, no accountability, no responsibility and nothing to lose.
flakeoil··on Thanks to social media, canned sardines are a scarcity on the supermarket shelf
It has always existed (that we do what others say or do), the difference now is that it is at a much larger scale. It's global and spread to millions and millions in seconds. Earlier it was a news paper or magazine or a TV show. It was national or regional and local. And it was slower. It took days and weeks to spread using magazines and TV and word of mouth. Today with social media it is global and it takes seconds.
flakeoil··on Who's afraid of Chinese models?
> that correlation is very strong; just compare Luxembourg, which is much wealthier and more polluting than surrounding nations

Well, your theory does not hold at all if you look at Switzerland which pollutes 1/4 of the US per capita. CO2 pollution is not and does not have to be correlated with standard of living.

flakeoil··on The bread paradox: why convenience always wins, and why SaaS isn't doomed
Smaller companies probably use a small subset of the features in the SaaS. This means one of two devs with an AI can implement the used subset fairly easily.

Bigger companies probably use more features and have more advanced requirements and the SaaS is integrated in different ways within different departments of the company. This means more developers are required, more interaction with different departments and thus less benefits of AI versus the traditional way of developing without AI (as the actual work is more in coordination, specification etc, than the actual coding bit).

flakeoil··on Why skilled workers come to Germany and then leave again
This is the right way. Speak the language you want. Even if they reply to you in English, and they know you can speak English, continue in German. They will understand. They switch to English because they want to be helpful. If you continue in German they understand you prefer it that way.

Another thing is that once you start talking with a person (who you meet on a regular basis) in one language, it is hard to switch to another language at a later date. So if you start with English, it is hard to go back to German. But if you start with German, even if it is less fluent for you, it will come natural that with that person you speak in German.

flakeoil··on SpaceX to buy Cursor for $60B
Revenue is not the same as cashflow.
flakeoil··on S&P 500 rejects SpaceX, also blocking entry for OpenAI and Anthropic
Just buy the stock or buy a mutual fund which invests in IT, AI, Tech what have you. Sooner or later they will probably also be included in the general index funds.
flakeoil··on Canada to order military plane fleet from Sweden in shift from US suppliers
But if you can have more 4th gen aircrafts and have easier support and maintenance so that you can keep them flying, then that might more than outweigh the 5th gen aircrafts possible superiority.

A 5th gen aircraft on the ground is not very useful. It's easier to bomb out 100 aircraft than 400 aircraft. A 5th gen aircraft, disabled remotely via software is not very useful.

flakeoil··on What we lost when we stopped letting kids leave the front yard
Is go shopping in malls what kids should do?
flakeoil··on Ask HN: Anyone have experience with infomaniak.com? Are they a scam?
Infomaniak and infomaniak.com is definitely not a scam. I have used them for email, calendar, cloud storage and domain names for over 10 years. I have not used them for servers/VPS.

Overall I'm very happy with them. They are probably not the cheapest however. And again, it's definitely not a scam.

Why not simply ask them about the pricing and why it didn't match the expected price.

EDIT: And just to complete my answer, for web hosting I recommend hetzner.com, they are low cost and solid and based in Europe. For office related stuff such as email, drive, calendar I recommend Infomaniak, basically as an alternative to Microsoft's/Google's office type software.

flakeoil··on The last six months in LLMs in five minutes
Does "creative" mean that you are creative at coming up with ideas or does it mean that you are artistic and can create stuff?

I suppose it is more the latter, and it's the artistic people who create stuff who will suffer. The ones coming up with ideas, but previously couldn't create becasuse they lacked skill might win thanks to AI.

Coming up with ideas is easy, creating and putting in the effort is hard (until we had AI).

Probably the value of created stuff will go down rapidly because there will be so much of it.

flakeoil··on Two millionth electric car registered as market rebounds from tax changes
Quite frankly, today there is no need to look anywhere else than a pure electric car. No point to buy an ICE with battery + electric motor. It just adds complexity and makes it expensive to service. The newly released EVs today are so good and have fantastic range.
flakeoil··on Belgium stops decommissioning nuclear power plants
You probably have to look at the whole picture. Having part of the energy generation from nuclear probably makes the total cheaper than having no nuclear. Even if nuclear maybe is the most expensive.

Not having enough energy or having it cut off by a neighbour is very expensive.

flakeoil··on French government agency confirms breach as hacker offers to sell data
> something you know like SSN/tax id/password

How can you equal an SSN/Tax id with a password? The SSN/Tax id is more or less public knowledge while a password is not.

flakeoil··on Ubuntu 26.04
I have a year ago switched from Ubuntu to Fedora and I like it. Clean and stable. Uses Flatpak. I'm using Fedora Workstation which is the default, but Fedora KDE Plasma seems to be nice as well if you want to have more configuration options available directly in the GUI. And the layout is more Windows like with start button menu etc for people coming from the Windows side.
flakeoil··on Europe has "maybe 6 weeks of jet fuel left"
If they normally have 6 weeks left, then that would mean they replenish as usual. If they normally have say 30 weeks left, then I guess they have some issues.
flakeoil··on Which European countries have the best salaries after taxes?
But there is no progressive tax in this account. It is a percentage of what you have in the account. Same percentage for everyone. It's just that starting in 2026 they decided to make it tax free for the first 300000 SEK (about 30000 USD) you have in this account.
flakeoil··on Which European countries have the best salaries after taxes?
I'm not sure what you are after with you comment, but this account, of which the rules are decided by the authorities, is not that special as every bank and internet trader offers it and it is free and provides low cost Internet trading. And contrary to special pension accounts which exist in many countries, you can take out your money (and add) anytime you want. You just have to pay the tax percentage which is due. So you cannot really add and remove money too often as then you trigger this tax, but once a year is fine.
flakeoil··on Which European countries have the best salaries after taxes?
There are no special privilieges for the rich, as everyone has the same rules. It's actually better for the poorer in a sense as everyone is exempt to pay tax on profits on stock and dividends below a certain amount, 300000 SEK.

In Sweden you can invest your money in a special investment account which charges a certain fixed percentage each year on the amount you have in this account (cash and stocks). The percentage is based on the central bank interest rates (a special formula based on that) so it changes each year. In the past 10 years it has been around between 0.5-1% of the total amount you have in this account. Then all the profits you make are tax free as well as no tax on dividends and interest. You can't deduct losses though.

In Sweden there is no wealth tax and no inheritance tax.

EDIT: And for completeness, if you invest outside of the above mentioned type of account you have to pay 30% on profits and 30% on dividends and interests.

flakeoil··on LaGuardia pilots raised safety alarms months before deadly runway crash
In the video it looks as if the other emergency vehicles have stopped and only the first truck is driving. Maybe they missed the light or it turned red just after the first truck passed the light.
flakeoil··on Kagi Small Web
> I remember when you could half-remember a comment from a website, type that into Google, and get taken to the article you were looking for.

Is that even possible today considering there is so much more information and pages around today than in 2010? Old google worked with old Internet. The old Internet does not exist.

flakeoil··on The engine of Germany's wealth is blocking its future
> Germany could fully supply it's national grid with German energy production.

With coal. And gas imported from Russia and by boat from the USA.

flakeoil··on The engine of Germany's wealth is blocking its future
The fact that Angela Merkel closed down all nuclear power plants was probably a big part of the lower interest in EVs in recent year. Although they invested a lot in solar and wind, the solid base of electricity generation disappeared and thus the trust in electricity for transport disappeared amongst automotive management and the population at large.
flakeoil··on Meta’s AI smart glasses and data privacy concerns
> you are allowed to film/photograph when you are actively doing it

Does it really count as "actively doing it" when the glasses are constantly filming while you do other stuff. With a phone/camera people can see you are filming or taking pictures. In many countries the shutter needs to make a sound when taking pictures. For video surveilance cameras a noticeable sign or sticker is needed.

flakeoil··on Most-read tech publications have lost over half their Google traffic since 2024
> you can get the answers you want, described to you exactly how you'd like to hear it

I thought we wanted the truth.

flakeoil··on Simplenote is no longer in active development
I can recommend Standard Notes as an alternative. https://standardnotes.com/

Works well on all paltforms, desktop and mobile. The sync works also great. It also backs up to text files on your computer, so that you can back up your files with your regular backup process and you can also easily move away if you would like to one day.

flakeoil··on Martial arts robots at 2026 Spring Festival Gala [video]
> The things the robots hold are almost certainly taped into their hands.

You can clearly see that the robots change their grip of their sword, so it cannot be taped to their hands.
