flakeoil··on I want an iPhone Mini-sized Android phone (2022)
Since Pixel 3a and iPhone SE 3, the battery technology has improved and especially the charging times have gone down dramatically so the battery life experience you had then would not occur today with the same form factor.
flakeoil··on How I build software quickly
Sqlite is not a very good choice for a typical CRUD app running on a web server. MySQL/Postgres/MariaDB will be much better. You can connect to it from remote and use GUI tools etc. Also much more flexible from an architectural point of view.

Sqlite seems to be the hip new thing to use where MySQL should have been used in the first place. Sqlite is great for many things, but not for the classic CRUD web app.

flakeoil··on Effectiveness of trees in reducing temperature, outdoor heat exposure in Vegas
But they probably don't evaporate water and cool as much as other plants and trees.
flakeoil··on A receipt printer cured my procrastination
How do you get so engage in the tasks you are doing so you forget to eat? I suppose most people here have the opposite issue, we do not engage in the task at all and once we start, we stop doing it after a short while because we find a more interesting things to do such as eating, grab a coffee or reading HN, news etc. We would love to be able to stay on the task and not go and eat.
flakeoil··on Another way electric cars clean the air: study says brake dust reduced by 83%
That should be easy to fix though with a bit of software.

Most replies relate to crypto, but blockchains can be used for so many other applications than crypto coins.
flakeoil··on GitHub MCP exploited: Accessing private repositories via MCP
How about using LLMs to help us configure the access permissions and guardrails? /s

I think I have to go full offline soon.

flakeoil··on Coinbase says hackers bribed staff to steal customer data, demanding $20M ransom
Not sure how you relate your UPS delivery with the scam call? Just because it happened the following day you expected a delivery? I could be just a coincidence.

I'm sure scammer's got get your phone number from many other sources and data breaches.

flakeoil··on Baby is healed with first personalized gene-editing treatment
I also wonder what happens if this kid one day has kids. In this case it was a very rare genetic disease, but if the same was applied to a less rare genetic disease (where it is also more beneficial to have a treatment as more people have use of it) wouldn't the end result be that more and more kids will be born with these diseases?
flakeoil··on Espressif's ESP32-C5 Is Now in Mass Production
> Well there's the use case of a device which gathers data and then uses its radio once every handful of hours to report that data to some service.

This is exactly a thing the ESP32 with WiFi cannot do if powered by a standard alkaline battery. The battery would drain in a couple of weeks.

And on top of that, it probably doesn't work at all, as it cannot even send once because the peak power draw is too high for an alkaline battery.

flakeoil··on Burrito Now, Pay Later
> ...while the card gives "cash back on purchases".

Sure, but cash back is a kind of marketing trick which makes the card user more willing to spend and use their card. It's this little extra which pushes you over to buy something because, hey, I get my cash back.

There is no free lunch. Someone has to pay the cash back and we like to think it is the merchant, but in the end it is the consumer who pays for all these cash backs and card fees.

flakeoil··on Burrito Now, Pay Later
In the text there are no benefits for the borrower/consumer outlined. BNPL is basically just a scam to lure in people to use this easy option to pay and then charge them late fees and interest once they forget one of their bills. It's not even convenient (except at checkout) because you will get a bill to pay down the line and that's not convenient to pay.
flakeoil··on Burrito Now, Pay Later
Yes, there is. You take on a risk of forgetting to pay or that there is missing cash on your account so that the payment does not get done. Now you all of a sudden have to pay interest. And for what benefit, just to lend the cash for free for a month? What would you do with that cash for one month which is so profitable and risk free to compensate for the quite high risk of missing one of those BNPL invoices?
flakeoil··on Espressif's ESP32-C5 Is Now in Mass Production
But your examples are all with the radio off. So then there is basically no point in using the ESP32. Better to use an MCU without radio and lower power consumption.
flakeoil··on Researchers discover why plastic sheds dangerous fragments
If you look at some plastic that has been outside in the sun for a while (a year or five) such as a toy or a plastic bag, it gets very fragile. If it's thin like a plastic bag, just the wind can break it apart. For thicker plastic parts, probably rain is enough to flush off the outer layer or powdered plastic every now and then.

flakeoil··on What if we made advertising illegal?
But how do you define advertising. What about social media influencers? How to prevent someone from paying people to promote stuff? What if it is forbidden and then only a bad government can promote their agenda, but anyone else cannot.

flakeoil··on Ask HN: Are there any money-saving hacks that AI can assist you with?
I suppose you could come up with the same result and probably better if you asked this question to yourself instead. I.e. by making a purposeful list in advance instead of just randomly selecting stuff while in the store.
flakeoil··on U.S. national-security leaders included me in a group chat
It's thanks to oil, gas and minerals exports they have managed to keep the russian economy going. Not thanks to entrepreneurship or some russian made products. They also stole a lot of western companies and their assets.
flakeoil··on AI bots are destroying Open Access
They are maxing out the CPU of the web servers. For example Anthropic hitting a server 11 times per second non-stop easily loads a basic web server serving a dynamic website. That's like 1 million page views per day. And they continue for weeks even though they could have scraped whatever they are after in less than an hour.
flakeoil··on Goblin.tools: simple, single-task tools to help neurodivergent people with tasks
Type 1 diabetes is a disease. Type 2 diabetes may or may not be a disease. It could as well be a symptom/condition created by lifestyle.

50 years ago there were not that many people with type 2 diabetes because people ate less and moved more (at work and at home).

flakeoil··on Two new PebbleOS watches
This is a DIY watch for enthusiasts. It gives you a head start versus building one yourself. And you can for sure use it as-is and with pre-made apps. But don't expect it to be a mass market consumer product. Look elsewhere. The website clearly highlights this too.
flakeoil··on Kaspersky exposes hidden malware on GitHub stealing personal data
Maybe don't put too much into the word "court order", but instead interpret it as an order from the government to force the company to use the tool for the governments/country's benefit.

One could also assume that the owners and/or management of the company are in the same boat as the government/country so they do not mind using the tool for the country's benefit when needed.

flakeoil··on Google Chrome disables uBlock Origin for some in Manifest v3 rollout
The article is not FUD or trash press. At least they explain the background and what is going on. I had this issue popping up in my Chrome without knowing why. Google Chrome did not tell anything about why they wanted to disable it. It seemed really weird.

At least from that article I get some background and know what to do to get uBlock Origin back.

flakeoil··on A SpaceX team is being brought in to overhaul FAA's air traffic control system
