don't we already have lots of machines that do things like this though? Even if its human operated: excavators, combines, tractors, and other heavy machinery have reduced the physical burden involved in sustaining large societies tremendously.
I am very surprised at the number of people in this thread who are labelling this time old tradition of inviting people into your home as stressfull, unnecessary, or a waste of their time. To be honest it is quite depressing.
I don't think "being extroverted all the time" is the desired outcome that is being demanded.
You don't need to do that to throw a dinner party a couple of times a year.
I do feel like the open-source desktop is probably the *most* modern of the 3 options (Windows, Mac, Linux). The configurations I have seen using hyprland implement a spectacular amount of features that cover different users needs in a way I could only dream of 15 years ago. Smooth animations, customizable workspace navigation, custom quickshell widgets that could do literally whatever you want, integrated side-panels that have things as niche as image board search, and much less niche like AI chat and language translation. This is just me describing illogical impulse dots[1], but that's just 1 configuration, and i didn't even mention all of the features available. My only complaint is that I think the way hyprland manages workspaces is goofy with multi monitor setups.
it only seems not-crazy if you also accept the implication "gypsys COULD live in housing like all of us normal people, but instead choose to live in parks and shit in bushes" - instead of framing it as a failure of housing policy or mental health, its being made a personal (moral) failure of individuals. That's the gross part.
this is kinda true but a lot of distros are like this.
If I installed debian and hyprland i'd basically be able to set up the same config as i have on arch now. Linux distros are basically just pick which package manager you like + whatever config you think is closest to what you want
There's multiple advantages to making money from equities that people who make money from ordinary income simply do not have, favourable tax rates, the ability to choose when and how much to realize, the ability to loss harvest, compound interest, everything around how we tax these 2 forms of income is set up to beget inequality.
Not as dystopian as the ability to get wealthier without working and pay no taxes (and even IF you sell to realize gains, your tax liability is still lower than someone who made money through labour)
Until you have a unit and a method to measure this field, and a way to experiment on it, it is not scientific theory. And, if it WAS the EM field, then surely transistors (or some other fundamental component of electronics or combination thereof) would be capable of having feelings, since they operate on electromagnetic principles.
And most people wouldn't eat cats, but would eat some of pig, cattle, chicken, what's the difference between those exactly? My point is consciousness is not it, if it were, we (as in a majority) would still eat cats and dogs, or we wouldn't eat any animals. But we clearly have a way of picking and choosing which is OK and which isn't. And in both cases we generally don't give them the same moral consideration we give to people, conscioussness aside. There is something OTHER than consciousness which is important to us.
Ostensibly animals appear to be conscious, yet we still eat them, and the vast majority are not bothered by this. So being "conscious" isn't really the moral line in the sand many people are drawing in response to this article.
Who cares if it's "conscious"? That doesn't make it a person, and AI will definitionally never be human.
does a hydrocarbon have feelings? what about a mitochondria? a cell? a neuron? what about a collection of neurons? how many neurons before it has "feelings"?
Almost all of these big phone companies are also the ones selling tablets and some of them laptops, so if they did do that they would start eating into their other business units.
>Firefox makes up about 90 percent of Mozilla’s revenue, according to Muhlheim, the finance chief for the organization’s for-profit arm — which in turn helps fund the nonprofit Mozilla Foundation. About 85 percent of that revenue comes from its deal with Google, he added.
I think it would be helpful if you could show a counter example of a scenario when someone is angry without a cause or target. On the face of it, that description seems accurate to my experience with anger.
I think there is something distinctly unique between dozing off from reality by letting your mind wander or twiddling your thumbs, and scrolling short form video.
This is not a good comparison, because the brain doesn't only do "being smart" - it has to do things like innervate muscle and other tissue through the body, elephants will require more neurons given their larger size, just to be able to *walk*
This is very fun to play with and design different drums. I was able to make one that had 4 connected but distinct regions giving different pitches, then within each of those regions (which look like 4 lobes of different sizes) where you tap on that region will further change the sound! Then I realized I basically just made a hand pan.
mass investment in renewable energy across the globe. You can't do much for the people of today, but you can do plenty of good for people 20+ years into the future. Something about planting and sitting in their shade.
