German here.

Cannot disagree more strongly with your point! No, the economic benefit of “having the sickest and most elderly die” should most definitely not be taken into account in strategic national planning.

Every life is precious. This line of thought is exactly what lead the Nazis to murder hundreds of thousands they considered an economic burden.

Never forget.

fkistner··on End-of-Life Announcement for CoreOS Container Linux
Can someone recommend an immutable Linux distro, which offers auto-updates out-of-the-box and supports arm64 on RPi?

Have been searching for something like this for a while for a personal project, but unfortunately neither Flatcar nor Fedora CoreOS seem to support arm64, RancherOS does not to seem to offer fully automatic updates.

fkistner··on As Costs Skyrocket, More U.S. Cities Stop Recycling
Good point. Fortunately, that seems to have been mandated by law since 2006 (at least for stores larger than 200m² ≅ 2150 sq ft).
fkistner··on As Costs Skyrocket, More U.S. Cities Stop Recycling
Assuming we are still talking about Germany, yes, plastics collected via "Der Grüne Punkt" (engl. the green dot, named after the label on the packing) are in fact commonly reused.

According to official figures about 51% of plastics are recycled, 38% is burned [1].

fkistner··on As Costs Skyrocket, More U.S. Cities Stop Recycling
Nit pick, things work differently for multi-way and one-way containers:

- There are no special regulations for multi-way bottles (glass and plastic alike). Most stores will accept only those they are incentivized to, i.e. the brands they sell (manufacturers are eager to get them back to be able to reuse them).

- As soon as a store sells a kind of one-way container (plastic bottles, aluminum cans), they have to accept, pay out the mandatory €0.25 deposit for, and properly dispose of each and every one-way container of that kind customers bring in (in household quantities). There is a clearing mechanism, since store's sales might not match their returns.

fkistner··on Mobile customer location data is ending up in the hands of bounty hunters
For a sneak peak of the kind of data you can expect take a look here [1] (German newspaper, but in English).

Background story: Malte Spitz, a Green Party member, sued to get all data collected and retained (according to a law which has been overturned since) by his carrier. Die ZEIT/OpenDataCity cross-referenced the data with publicly available information from his Twitter and party website and compiled it all into one visualization.

Unfortunately, they seem to have stopped paying for the Google Maps integration, but you should still be able to follow along just fine.

fkistner··on Google Duplex: An AI System for Accomplishing Real World Tasks Over the Phone
I wonder, if this will be confined to one-party consent states/countries for the foreseeable future.

Google will most likely want to use recordings to keep fine-tuning and improving upon Duplex, and I don't see them announcing "This call is recorded by Google.", when they're going through such great lengths to convince the called parties that they are talking with a human being.

fkistner··on Why we should learn German
While it does not justify the completely inappropriate behavior, it might make sense to mention for context that one of the authors of the video is a right wing activist/journalist according to Wikipedia [1].

The claim that Germany is a country where foreign journalists in general have be afraid of being chased is unfounded. This was an incident involving so called right and left wing "activists."

fkistner··on The capital sharp S in now part of the official German orthography
But so do inconsistent spellings. There is a reason, most languages apart from English have no use for spelling bees. [1]

[1]: https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2013/05/30/spell...

fkistner··on The capital sharp S in now part of the official German orthography
Let's be careful on proclaiming what's better.

Yes, the spaces make it easier to distinguish the individual components, but on the flip side it makes it much harder to figure out where the compound group ends. Even your examples illustrate that.

Different languages have evolved according to different, sometimes diametrical opposite goals. As a consequence, somethings are easier to express in some languages than in others. That's the beauty.

fkistner··on The capital sharp S in now part of the official German orthography
I don't think it is a given that languages naturally evolve to become simpler and only narrow-minded people are holding them back.

Languages evolve to suit the needs of their speakers. If people find themselves without words to describe something succinctly, languages will evolve to become more expressive.

I think compound nouns (as used in German) are a good example of this. They make the language more complex and harder to learn, but allow speakers to capture what exactly an object is or how it relates to others by slapping multiple nouns onto each other.

fkistner··on The capital sharp S in now part of the official German orthography
I have never understood the idea of protecting a language against foreign words. I think languages naturally strive to be as expressive as possible and will adopt words accordingly.

However, I think it is important to note that the ẞ is not a letter they just made up. Heck, even the picture in the article shows an old book cover, which uses this never standardized letter. To me this is just correcting a previous oversight and formally allowing (not forcing) people to use the 'capital sharp s', for example in print, where they want to typeset a title in capitals.

fkistner··on The capital sharp S in now part of the official German orthography
I see your point. But wouldn't this problem be better addressed with an additional field on one's passport, which states the name in a standardized alphabet, e.g. ASCII?

Asian passports seem to include something like this.

fkistner··on The capital sharp S in now part of the official German orthography
Sure, languages are about communication. As long as the other person understands what you are trying to get across, you're probably fine.

However, orthography does serve an important part in getting your point across. German for example heavily relies on capitalization (compared to e.g. English) to help the reader parse the sentence structure. The Umlauts serve a similar purpose to make it easier to differentiate words.

For instant messaging this probably does not matter too much, but what about books, technical reports, etc.? What's to gain from not using "proper" orthography in them, which might give the reader more hints about the sentence structure and hence its meaning?

Schöne Grüße ;)

I think there is a fault in your argument. Not all students, use global rankings to make up their minds. It's a matter of perspective. I am fairly confident that most top 5% European students have not considered applying to an Ivy League school or any American university for that matter. Your claim that German universities mainly attract mediocre students is completely unfounded.
