fjabre··on PG&E power line suspected in Dixie fire was set to be buried underground
No money to be made by saving lives, infrastructure, and air quality?
fjabre··on PG&E power line suspected in Dixie fire was set to be buried underground
Was the Space industry 90% a political problem before SpaceX and friends disrupted it?
fjabre··on PG&E power line suspected in Dixie fire was set to be buried underground
So private tech industry can solve the Space race but not wildfire?
fjabre··on PG&E power line suspected in Dixie fire was set to be buried underground
If the space race can be disrupted then so too can this one.

Space was government only until very recently.

fjabre··on PG&E power line suspected in Dixie fire was set to be buried underground
Well for sentimental reasons I guess then ;) They love to solve problems and use California as a testing ground for the latest photo sharing app.

But where are the DIY fire fighting apps and devices? Where are the startups that promise 10,000 drones that can put out a 50,000 acre fire in under 2 hours?

fjabre··on PG&E power line suspected in Dixie fire was set to be buried underground
Agree with you. I'm doing my part. Also raising awareness is part of that. Thank you.
fjabre··on PG&E power line suspected in Dixie fire was set to be buried underground
Yes I agree with you here.

Solution is not government as with the Space race. It will be won by private industry. I'm perplexed that more bay areas thought leaders haven't jumped on this problem given how close it is to their back yards.

fjabre··on PG&E power line suspected in Dixie fire was set to be buried underground
The two approaches are not mutually exclusive.

Yes to better forest management. Of course we have to do that.

The state will burn down without intervention. That is painstakingly clear.

fjabre··on PG&E power line suspected in Dixie fire was set to be buried underground
The forests will die without intervention. Unless you want California to become 100% desert lands.

Sequoias on the Western Sierra slopes are the last in the world. And from the looks of it they don't have much time. Would you like us to clear the 3000 year old trees too?

Temps are rising. We are engineers who talk of terraforming mars.

Why can we not talk of doing the same thing in our own back yard?

fjabre··on PG&E power line suspected in Dixie fire was set to be buried underground
It's a start at least.

But from the best and brightest in the world? People who put rovers on Mars but don't want to put a fire out that could destroy half of their state?

fjabre··on PG&E power line suspected in Dixie fire was set to be buried underground
Are their vacation homes and the places they like to spend time with their families away from the office close to the wildfires?

I don't understand. Do you mean to say they are ok with half of the state burning down as long as their offices are unaffected?

Air quality will affect the output of their workforce. They can probably measure it in dollars.

Better offense is needed. Yes it's good to understand fire dynamics but not very useful when nothing can be done about it.

I was hoping we'd figure out a better way by now than throwing more firefighting humans at the problem.

fjabre··on PG&E power line suspected in Dixie fire was set to be buried underground
So they are ok with their vacation homes and the other half of the state burning down as long as their campuses are ok?

Not much money to be made by saving lives, health, and billions of dollars in infrastructure damage?

fjabre··on PG&E power line suspected in Dixie fire was set to be buried underground
Why are there no request proposals from YC for new or novel firefighting tech?

Are wildfires not an engineering problem?

California is YC's backyard. PG and friends all have their lives in Nor Cal where most of these recent fires have been taking place.

I am perplexed by the silence of YC and other bay area stars like Google, Apple and the bay area tech giants that seem oddly silent on the matter.

Would it take Google or Apple's campus burning down before they took the threat seriously?

fjabre··on PG&E power line suspected in Dixie fire was set to be buried underground
Agree with this.

State should be investing heavily in solar for everyone.

The future of firefighting should be heavily invested in.

Have there been YC proposals for novel firefighting tech?

If not then why not? Obviously a field ripe for disruption.

fjabre··on Dubai is making its own fake rain to beat 122°F heat
Home to some of the best and brightest engineers in the world and California is still figuring how many firemen, goats and firetrucks to send.

Where are Google, Facebook, Apple, SpaceX, California state gov?

And Musk is still focused on LA traffic jams. I guess the worst fires in California state history are not enough to sway the titans of industry into action.

Even though these fires are happening in their back yard.

Have you looked at the Interfaces files?

You did the right thing by scraping the data. That is the more clever way. Scraping is not illegal. Google does it every second of every day.

fjabre··on Who Built the Egyptian Pyramids? Not Slaves
"That’s hundreds of years before historians think the Israeli people first appeared. It’s also centuries before the oldest known Egyptian reference to the Jews on the Victory Stele of Merneptah."

So the story of Moses out of Egypt has definitively been disproven by the word 'think.'

I would encourage people to use critical thinking skills while reading this article.

Of course slave labor was used over the thousand year period these structures were built. Perhaps not all the workers were slaves but some percentage of them were.

This article merely points to the existence of some popular contractors at the time. Contractors who most likely used their own slave labor.

What's the definition of a slave in Egyptian times? What would prove or disprove their existence 4000 years ago? This is not a logical or reasonable article. It makes far too many assumptions. It should be rewritten and the findings described without the interpretation of the author.

fjabre··on GitHub Should Start an App Store
Seatbelt laws are not the analogy I would use. It's direct physical bodily harm vs some unknown and unquantifiable risk when installing a 3rd party app.

We got by just fine in the 80s and 90s without App stores. So much innovation came out of that world which established the dominant players who are in control now.

And you don't even get security with App stores. As we already know with all the malware found in Google Play apps.

App stores are simply keeping the big guys big and small guys small with few exceptions here and there.

It's just another walled garden that keeps the little guy out and keeps players like Google and Apple entrenched.

fjabre··on Launch HN: Albedo (YC W21) – Highest resolution satellite imagery
The fields of archaeology and anthropology would benefit greatly from this.
fjabre··on GitHub Should Start an App Store
Anyone in favor of an app store like Apple's or Google's would trade freedom in the name of fear and security.

And you're right, it's worse than that. They're not even getting the security they've trade their freedom for.

fjabre··on GitHub Should Start an App Store
We always give up freedom in the name of security so so easily.

Why is that? Why does fear always win? Your argument is based on fear. Why do we favor fear over rationality?

You would choose a dictatorship over a democracy if it meant that you felt safe. This where that line of thinking leads.

You'd rather be safe than free.

fjabre··on GitHub Should Start an App Store
I couldn't agree with this more. Less App stores not more. Have people not learned their lesson?

You'd think stealing 30% of the profits and booting apps off the store for no good reason would be enough.

fjabre··on Ask HN: Remote workers in a non-tech city, what's your experience?
I wouldn't trade my remote work for anything in the world. It's incredibly rewarding. The flexibility this allows for is unparalleled by any other single benefit a job can offer other than salary perhaps.

It's given me so much freedom and independence in life. Source: I'm what most people would consider an introvert and I've been working from home since 2006.

I currently reside in a sleepy mountain town in California and I couldn't be happier here.

fjabre··on Statement of SEC Regarding Recent Market Volatility
This is not David vs Goliath. This is Goliath vs Goliath. A reddit mob armed with Macbook Pros and iPhone 11s does not equal 'the little guy.'
fjabre··on The censorship of WallStreetBets needs to be a watershed moment for everyone
I think both sides are doing the same thing and pointing fingers at each other. That's my point. Market manipulation is just that, whether it's done by a privileged class on their iPhone 11s (i.e. the Reddit mob) or Hedge fund managers.

A privileged mob on reddit armed with Macbook pros does not equal the people sticking it to the man.

Reddit itself is part of the oligarchy everyone is railing against.

fjabre··on The censorship of WallStreetBets needs to be a watershed moment for everyone
It's not different. That's my point. The mob did the same thing the hedge funds did and do. This is clearly market manipulation. To say that one side is justified vs the other is what I'm pointing out. Neither side was justified. And Reddit mobs are not 'the people.'

The people are starving on the streets and unemployed. Too far gone to make bets on their iPhone 11s using something like Robin Hood.

This is Goliath vs a somewhat more organized and entrenched Goliath. This is not David vs Goliath.

fjabre··on The censorship of WallStreetBets needs to be a watershed moment for everyone
I would hesitate from calling WallStreetBets or Reddit the 'little guy'. That's the part that gets me about this story. Both sides are immoral and wrong in manipulating the market and both sides have committed the crime of market manipulation.
fjabre··on The censorship of WallStreetBets needs to be a watershed moment for everyone
I'm glad we can finally admit that Reddit is a mob and encourages mob mentality. There is no wisdom in that crowd anymore.

And maybe not party lines but the stench of hypocrisy is overwhelming. This mob helps no one. It's just a lot of people making bets against each other and manipulating the market.

Just because one side is an angry mob on Reddit does not make it right or moral what happened. I would hardly call r/WallStreetBets 'the people.' It's nothing more than an angry mob.

fjabre··on How To Get Your First 1,000 Users (2011)
The current players are comfortably entrenched. Thankfully China does not allow them to operate there. It gives us some hope that new players will form and become competitive like TikTok. Google and friends are only beholden to their stock holders.

Google and Facebook destroy competitors. And make sure new entrants cannot gain traction. They are about as anti-competitive as they can be.
