Fucking echo chamber.

fixxer··on AI and Bitcoin are driving the next big hedge fund wave
Yep, that is where I was going.
fixxer··on AI and Bitcoin are driving the next big hedge fund wave
The secret with building good models is and will always be about getting good data. There is a ton of good data for trading. Unfortunately, the SEC frowns on it being used for profit.
fixxer··on AI and Bitcoin are driving the next big hedge fund wave
There are people submitting a ton of models that are all very similar, basically overfitting the public board.

Even my cheating robot is bored of Numerai.
fixxer··on Ask HN: Are there 'dumb' ways to make money as a developer in your spare time?
I'm in a similar spot (earning the high end for my title; promotion is feasible, but some politics at play within the org, so I'm gonna end up putting some time in at my current level). I have free time and enjoy writing code, so I pick up little consulting gigs here and there for play money (I'm an avid homebrewer, so money is always well spent)
fixxer··on Ask HN: Are there 'dumb' ways to make money as a developer in your spare time?
Frugality is great, but, repeating myself from below, I assume that effort is already there and the OP is trying to generate additional revenues beyond his or her primary income.

fixxer··on Felony Charges for 6 Reporters at Inauguration Protests
Yeah, right. We're going to solve problems by using an internet forum. Wake the fuck up.
fixxer··on Felony Charges for 6 Reporters at Inauguration Protests
C'mon mods. Time for another moratorium on politics.
fixxer··on Dutch secret service tries to recruit Tor-admin
We do have standards in place for monitoring the movement of large sums of cash through the system, and those are well accepted... So are you OK with something similar for encrypted traffic?
fixxer··on Dutch secret service tries to recruit Tor-admin
Tor is a huge inconvenience to a government that wants to suppress the exchange of controversial ideas within the civilian population.

It is also a huge problem to a government struggling to halt, for instance, Islamic terrorists that are well established within that population and potentially use Tor for communication.

I think this is a case of the latter and I don't disagree with the sentiment 100%. The region faces some substantial challenges and we're going to see civil liberties erode.

fixxer··on George Orwell’s 1984 is currently the top selling book on Amazon
Lol. You're only going to confuse them.
fixxer··on Trump bans EPA employees from giving social media updates
If tweets are the def of high standards, then we're fucked. Seriously, this is idiotic.
fixxer··on Trump bans EPA employees from giving social media updates
Meh. This is pretty common in the private sector in various forms, either explicit or implicit. I wouldn't call this censorship. They can still, I presume, communicate their concerns with oversight groups.
fixxer··on Attention Federal Employees: If You See Something, Leak Something
Comment under your regular account and stop giving a shit about the score.
fixxer··on Attention Federal Employees: If You See Something, Leak Something
Campaigned? I think you meant "published leaked documents without taking a side", but whatever, keep on pretending HRC wasnt just a more presentable version of vile.
fixxer··on Obama Expands Surveillance Powers on His Way Out
Well, are we surprised?
fixxer··on Ask HN: What is the best Linux distro for a development laptop?
What is the value add for SUSE over Ubuntu? Sell me on it. I'm open minded. I use Ubuntu Server because I know it well, but honestly I don't have any other preference. I don't generally rely on package managers for prod deploys (I like source and it works well with my security restrictions).
fixxer··on Ask HN: What is the best Linux distro for a development laptop?
The best development OS is the production OS, so just use whatever you're going to deploy on. Ubuntu (Server) and RHEL and Centos are ubiquitous. I think the easiest to manage in prod is Ubuntu.
fixxer··on 'Legitimate' US healthcare pricing could reduce costs by a third
Very often, the answer to that question is not known. I went through this when my wife was pregnant with out first and I was in graduate school. We were sitting down with the accounting rep from the hospital planning the next few months and she had zero idea of what the cost was going to be for routine procedures.
fixxer··on 'Legitimate' US healthcare pricing could reduce costs by a third
If the ACA had sought to create a competitive market between the consumer and the provider instead of between the consumer and the insurer, it would have been a truly revolutionary leap forward.

Instead, we got entitlement expansion.

I once thought fake news meant Breitbart and Alex Jones...
fixxer··on Cyber-Related Sanctions Designations
"Assuming his intelligence organizations hold to those recommendations."

Assuming those orgs even remotely resemble the same things they are now after inauguration. Clinton gutted the CIA after he got into office.

fixxer··on Mycroft – A.I. for everyone
What hardware interface are you using? I'm must getting into this myself (using my shiny new Echo for the interface to my homebrewed domestic control service).
fixxer··on Metallica singer leaves Bay Area because of 'elitist' attitude
Lol, I was wondering that myself.
fixxer··on Dubai Police now using Crime Prediction software
Great... Maybe now they can use their precognition software to find more adulterous women (rape victims) or hostile employees (slaves from South Asia).
fixxer··on Metallica singer leaves Bay Area because of 'elitist' attitude
"Deer on the bumper" is a common saying for "attached to car for transport". I'm sure he has it in the back of a truck.

Edit: James hunts. Well known. Don't be silly.

fixxer··on Metallica singer leaves Bay Area because of 'elitist' attitude
Given he has been a longtime libertarian/GOP, he probably is using elitists as a euphemism for liberals. And, he isn't wrong about Vail in that sense.
fixxer··on Metallica singer leaves Bay Area because of 'elitist' attitude
Lol. I would pay for a video of him driving through SF with a deer on the bumper.

I get looks every season and I'm in Illinois.
