fiter··on San Francisco, Silicon Valley rents plunge amid downturn
Before the bump in the move-out offer minimum, they could have done an Ellis Act eviction if they wanted to recover for their own use while paying you the minimum possible. (Actually, Ellis Act is one of the only eviction types allowed right now.) That said, it sounds like they wanted to have their cake and eat it too, so it's too bad you didn't feel like taking them to task.

You can't even evict people right now due to the emergency regulations. I wonder why the landlords are even bothering right now? Wait until after, evict for non-payment (one of the only easy ways to evict), then either try to collect or send back rent to collections and claim it as a loss and move on.
fiter··on All-electric Cessna Grand Caravan makes maiden flight
The vast majority of the population will never fly in a leaded gas powered plane, so I'd think the harm is much more than the gain. Said in another way, it probably wouldn't take much convincing to get a proposition passed to ban leaded gas for aviation.
fiter··on All-electric Cessna Grand Caravan makes maiden flight
It doesn't seem like you're addressing the pollution/health effects to the population caused by burning leaded gas and the relative harm of that versus the benefit of keeping the existing fleet flying. Is that because the pollution is so small or that the pollution just is not relevant in your opinion?

The police misuse of force and deadly force and police brutality are unfortunately topics that all races can engage with[0].

It is not clear to me that insisting racism is creating a coalition that will change the system.

While I can understand the presumption that fees will rise to make it profitable to move transactions, is there any simple market mechanism for making sure transactions move safely? A slow continuous drop in hash rate could result in the network being more vulnerable to attacks.

I believe you consider phone numbers pseudo-anonymous identifiers, which I believe Matrix names also qualify as.

Is there any technical reason why Matrix servers would have to store contact lists?

Both Signal and Matrix would have store message metadata to deliver it.

I searched for what the significant difference is, but could not come up with a good document to read.

fiter··on Why We Can't Build
If we have more diversity in the kind of places where people can live, I suppose that we would have more people finding the place they want to live.

Other people replying to you in this thread seem to think people can live where they live right now and we can always resolve all the conflicting needs and desires. I think this hasn't been achieved because it cannot be. It is worth trying and why everyone should be involved in their community to keep it or change it to how they want, but I do think that there are points where you "give up" and move. I've done it before.

We're not even close to the problem of not having any work to do. Let's limit the work week to 4 days, or give one week off every 5.
fiter··on Swedish expert: why lockdowns are the wrong policy
Indeed, that is stated in the article. Do you have any specific concerns with their methodology that would cause the results to have an even larger error range than they account for?

The recent study in Santa Clara County suggests it may be between 0.12 and 0.20 though it suggests only a couple percent have had it there: https://www.sfgate.com/news/editorspicks/article/Santa-Clara...

From your study on point 2: "Results of our systematic review and meta-analysis show that there was no significant difference between N95 respirators and surgical masks when used by health care workers to prevent transmission of acute respiratory infections from patients. However, wide 95% CIs from our meta-analysis must be interpreted as insufficient evidence to determine whether there is a clinically significant difference."

What the study says is that we don't have enough information. As an example, one of the studies referenced in that study gives odds of 0.58 for getting infected with surgical and 0.42 with N95.

Bonus quote: "Furthermore, we do not have an adequate understanding of the number, size and dispersion of the droplets that contain live, infectious particles produced by infected patients.56 A laboratory-based study reported data that humans infected with influenza rarely produce aerosols that contain infectious viral particles.57 In 2 other laboratory studies, participants infected with influenza produced droplets containing viral RNA, but viral RNA could not be detected on manikin headforms or on filters of breathing manikins at distances as close as 0.1 m following participants breathing, counting, coughing or laughing.7"

fiter··on Health-insurance premiums could rise 40% or more next year
Wouldn't that proposal get rid of the incentive of cherry-picking/lemon-dropping?
fiter··on Health-insurance premiums could rise 40% or more next year
This doesn't sound hard to achieve in a bipartisan manner. Why didn't this get created with the Affordable Care Act? This also seems much more in line with traditional insurance (big, occasional claims) and would probably be easier to audit due to the lower volume of cases.

This is also a reason to eat meat from animals fed food for people. In the bad times, slaughter the animals and eat the meat and the feed.

It's changed my perspective on efficiency. There are some forms of inefficiency that can provide a buffer if something goes wrong.

A friend of mine worked for the stage hand's union. It seemed as if it already worked like Uber. Of course in this case Uber was owned by the drivers, not a founder and investors.

What's the rude awakening that I should expect?

fiter··on Glitch employees vote to form union, joining CWA
I cannot tell if you are intentionally misreading my statement. If you are not, what I meant is that the union would be removed.
fiter··on Glitch employees vote to form union, joining CWA
Unions reinforce the concept of class conflict/struggle/warfare due to strict categorization. The laws seem to be set up in a way to encourage this "us versus them" mentality.

"Managers and supervisors are also not protected by the NLRA, and cannot join unions or be part of the bargaining unit. These employees are considered to be part of a company’s management rather than its labor force."

In the US, it looks like you can "permanently replace" union workers who are on strike.
fiter··on Glitch employees vote to form union, joining CWA
You're even more compromised if you are removed.

In the US, do you think companies have not moved manufacturing from union plants to non-union plants? Do you think they have not moved manufacturing out of US plants? Do you think this does not have to do with union membership?

I believe the adversarial view of unions and employers results in inefficiency and waste. I was suggesting an alternative view of unions and employers, but I believe I now understand you: you think this is impossible.

fiter··on Glitch employees vote to form union, joining CWA
Are you implying that public prosecutors have the option to not interact with criminal defense attorneys, because companies certainly have the option to hire employees that do not work for unions.

Could these unemployed employees start their own cooperatives that do not take advantage of employees? I want to focus on making this possible. I am, personally, concerned that trying to create some two sided balance of power will not end up representing me as both sides will have their own interest.
fiter··on Glitch employees vote to form union, joining CWA
Why not? I would presume that would help with regard to union busting, scabs, outsourcing, etc.
fiter··on Glitch employees vote to form union, joining CWA
Is this one of the angles that unions use to sell themselves to companies? They can help by providing a well of valuable resources to draw on in an as-needed basis. When both hiring and firing would be an easier proposition, I could see more activity occurring as a result. These people would have experience at different companies and could provide their knowledge like many say is the benefit of people rotating jobs a lot in the SF Bay Area.

I appreciate your opinion in your comments on this post. All of them read to me as balanced and nuanced.

Regarding 2, is there any reason the union achievements must apply to non-union workers as well?

fiter··on Glitch employees vote to form union, joining CWA
I would argue you still need popular support as people might find that behavior abusive. I know I'd be willing to organize dump runs in the event my trash was not being picked up for a reason I didn't agree with.

I believe the commentator that you're replying to was referring to the fact that they just brought in a union with 700,000 other employees[0]. That significantly alters their team.

[0] Communications Workers of America (CWA) is the largest communications and media labor union in the United States, representing about 700,000 members in both the private and public sectors (also in Canada and Puerto Rico).

fiter··on Glitch employees vote to form union, joining CWA
You'd presumably be making a trade off for a more efficient/responsive/differently-cultured union. This may be worth it if there is otherwise a large mismatch between who the union currently serves and you. (Or a conflict of interest; are you putting out of business one of the union's large employers?)
fiter··on A grandmother made a forest on her own [video]
You say 100 trees per acre, but Afforestt says 100 trees per 30 sq meters (0.0074 acre)[0][1]! (This is equivalent to 121,000 per acre.) A mature forest may only need 100 trees per acre, but it may take a much larger density to get it started. You may need the soil shaded to keep the soil and leaf fall moist. You may need the trees to shade eachother. You may need the trees to share resources through their roots. You may need the trees to protect each other from the wind.
