firstSpeaker··on Elon's first big move: pay to remain verified on Twitter
"Twitter is strongly considering making its users pay to remain verified on the service, Platformer has learned. If the project makes forward, users would have to subscribe to Twitter Blue at $4.99 a month or lose their badges.

Executives at the newly Elon Musk-owned company have spent the weekend discussing the move and making plans related to the project, according to two people familiar with the matter."

firstSpeaker··on GM suspends advertising on Twitter to evaluate its direction under Elon Musk
With Apple standing at the corner waiting for any of the social media companies making money from the app (in this case selling boosts) I wont be surprised if Musk come up with some solution that wont need him paying Apple a substantial cut from a feature like boost.

I used to have the earlier version of Kindle, it was called Kindle DX (much bigger screen compared to new kindle editions). When that one broke down I didn't get another e-reader until now. Now I see that I can get something in that size with possibility of taking notes. :). I wait to see how Scribe stack against RM2 and then make a purchase.

firstSpeaker··on The Social Recession: By the Numbers
When I was a 10 or something we used to gather together and watch tv with neighbours kids, we used to borrow things from our neighbours! My mother and other kids mothers used to sit and have tea and chitchat and spend time together. It was to the point that we could go to our friends house anytime and maybe even sit and have lunch with them (no invitation or preparation was needed). Comparing that with today small town that I live it feels more like people are living in in isolation cells rather than a community.

firstSpeaker··on Drone footage reveals The Line megacity under construction in Saudi Arabia
It is for sure ambitious. But since a very young age I have seen massive self sustaining futuristic cities being proposed. Maybe this is a beginning for such megastructures being built.

We won’t learn without doing and I hope either they succeed and build the amazing city they set to do or share enough experience and knowledge for the next one to be successful

firstSpeaker··on What “diversity and inclusion” means at Microsoft
We are a European enterprise and we have contracts with special recruitment firm for DEI quota. We had the opportunity to hire some amazing and technical folks through them. People with special hobbies and interests that would really make a different and add a new dimension to conversations.

The growing issue is the increasing number of employees coming in with skillset below 50% of current peers. Not all from EDI source, but for sure majority. Higher skilled engineers are leaving because they need to do more and more work to keep up the systems operational and that results in more and more of the skilled folks leaving.

Trying to explain this to VPs and directors and they would just say dont choose them! The interview system is set in a way that we get a bunch of resume without names and we need to stack them. HR contact as many of them as they feel good about and there goes the round of interviews. After the interviews we stack the results and hand it over to the management. And they decide whom to hire based on the stacked results and their own infallible judgment.

Sadly it also reflects poorly on people who are good and come in with DEI budget. They need to spend more times earning trust.

firstSpeaker··on From Burned Out Tech CEO to Amazon Warehouse Associate
I have seen multiple PhD students that when finished went to work on physical type of works. From fish gutting (If I used the right translation of the term) to forest works. Any of them I asked said something along the line of: they cannot take it anymore and it has been too intense to continue with anything that needs them to analyse and think.
firstSpeaker··on Amazon to Close 4 of Its 5 US Call Centers, Shifts to Work-from-Home
This is a big news both because it will help people who don’t want to commute and work from home and will cause trouble for people cannot work from home (small homes, kids, noisy environments, etc.)
firstSpeaker··on Ask HN: Have you experienced “hiring fraud?”
There are significantly worst things happening in the industry by much much bigger consultancy names. We, an enterprise, hire complete teams from the consultancy that would pick some of the work in different projects with their own product owner and so on but under our contract.

We seldom see all the people whom we interviewed for the teams, as devs, being present in the meetings that they are all expected to be present (of course it is most often the timezone difference that is the mentioned reason). Or people who join have their camera turned off, so no way to see them.

Code quality that comes, is not on par with the skillset we evaluated during the interviews and I suspect the whole consultancy is doing something similar with presenting top engineers in the interview and then moving them between many teams. Leaving the less skilled engineer to do the work.

firstSpeaker··on Meta and Google are cutting staff
Amazon seems to be on the short list of big tech companies still not completely frozen the hiring. They seem to have slowed down, according to https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=32929483 but not full pause.

Is this just AWS that has such a broken culture or it is all other teams? Although AWS is big, but Amazon has other organisations and teams. (https://www.amazon.jobs/en/search-teamcategory).

firstSpeaker··on Ask HN: Anyone joined a company after contributing to their OSS projects?
Long long long time ago I joined Sun after contributing to GlassFish and NetBeans for a while (documents, test cases, some new plugins for NetBeans). They approached me and hired me to work on GlassFish application server.
