firstSpeaker··on Capital One axes 1k tech roles
well... https://www.scaledagileframework.com/ has gone so far into the koo koo land that teams are dysfunctional because of them.
firstSpeaker··on Capital One axes 1k tech roles
Usually the family of jobs you do not see any big tech company. These are the roles that are defined in SAFe framework!
firstSpeaker··on Google Calls in Help from Larry Page and Sergey Brin for A.I. Fight
Very likely google rushing out few of their already existing and ready apps and deal with the regulatory/accuracy later.
firstSpeaker··on MacBook Pro featuring M2 Pro and M2 Max
Could you elaborate what is preventing it from being the perfect backend dev laptop?
firstSpeaker··on Native Americans urge Apache Software Foundation to ditch its name
I cannot even imagine the ramification of such change throughout the software industry. All the packages, modules, artifacts, dns names, and the list continues.

PS: I am not commenting about the merit of the demand but the ramification.

firstSpeaker··on Coinbase cuts staff by a further 20%
I agree, and my experience of interviewing in the big tech has been very varied. Amazon's was the most professionally conducted one.
firstSpeaker··on Microsoft will have to buy OpenAI in 2023
I was listening to a podcast[1] and they say the cost of inference (responding to a question) in ChatGPT is about 1-2 cent. Is that true? And how would that map to the overall cost microsoft can pay for integrating that into Bing, considering number of search queries in Bing.

firstSpeaker··on Dotfiles Management
Interesting, thanks for sharing. Two questions:

Does this make a backup of an existing set of .files?

Does this also install required packages using brew?

firstSpeaker··on Universe 25, 1968–1973 (2022)
Are there any more recent, more deeply analysed studies like this?
firstSpeaker··on Production Twitter on one machine? 100Gbps NICs and NVMe are fast
This is one of the most interesting part of the whole post for me:

Through intense digging I found a researcher who left a notebook public including tweet counts from many years of Twitter’s 10% sampled “Decahose” API and discovered the surprising fact that tweet rate today is around the same as or lower than 2013! Tweet rate peaked in 2014 and then declined before reaching new peaks in the pandemic. Elon recently tweeted the same 500M/day number which matches the Decahose notebook and 2013 blog post, so this seems to be true! Twitter’s active users grew the whole time so I think this reflects a shift from a “posting about your life to your friends” platform to an algorithmic content-consumption platform.

So, the number of writes has been the same for a good long while.

firstSpeaker··on Amazon has raised the number of jobs it plans to cut 18,000
Do they layoff at all levels or just it is more less experienced engineers?
firstSpeaker··on Amazon has raised the number of jobs it plans to cut 18,000
Have they doubled the number of employees at AWS? During what time period?
firstSpeaker··on Twitter down for thousands of users
Looking forward to learn what happened, if they publish any details that is.
firstSpeaker··on How Southwest Airlines melted down
I imagine the system cannot account for where all the planes, staff, passengers are and where they want to go economically.
firstSpeaker··on What’s in a PR statement: LastPass breach explained
"We learn here that LastPass was storing your IP addresses. And since they don’t state how many they were storing, we have to assume: all of them. And if you are an active LastPass user, that data should be good enough to create a complete movement profile. Which is now in the hands of an unknown threat actor."

Scary for activists anywhere.

firstSpeaker··on I have reached Vim nirvana
Thank you. It is 404, probably the repo is not public?
firstSpeaker··on I have reached Vim nirvana
Do you by any chance have your whole config shared somewhere?
firstSpeaker··on Email Marketing to Developers
I specifically dislike it when they sent emails persistently with content along the line of "Maybe you have not seen my previous email?"

The second reason that I do a report-spam is when google cannot automatically unsubscribe and a browser tab opens and I should type an email address and confirm.

The worst are the ones that send back a confirmation that I have unsubscribed.

There are some pretty big names in oss with enterprise offerings that are doing this kind of communication.

firstSpeaker··on Writing a Mini-CDN to Learn Nginx/Prometheus/Grafana/Lua
Go with Mimir. It is Prometheus compatible and horizontally scalable for read/write path separately.

firstSpeaker··on “I’m selling data of 400M Twitter users that was scraped via a vulnerability”
If real, some people may basically face the death penalty in countries like Iran with the current situation. Anyone with anti-regime content and identifiable attributes in the leaked database is very stressed now.
firstSpeaker··on Paul Graham is leaving Twitter for now
It might be that I am too biased now, but when I visited twitter today the only feed that I saw (default ordering, whatever that is) was the blue mark tweets. Anyone else experiencing something similar?
firstSpeaker··on The great crypto crisis is upon us
Because they get the same talking point, and sort of repeat it.
firstSpeaker··on Binance outflows hit $6B as Mazars halts ‘proof of reserves’ work
Any firm that survive the current ?recession? will have significantly more chance of surviving and passing the shivers. Maybe the next 6 months or so is critical for Binance or any other central wallet/exchange since people are on the edge.
firstSpeaker··on Ask HN: What are good self hosted time tracking software for consultants?
I use this even without being a consultant. Amazing app to track more or less what eats most of the time at work.
firstSpeaker··on Twitter is preparing for a series of legal battles over missed payments
I imagine not in this case!
firstSpeaker··on Binance temporarily halts withdrawals of stablecoin USDC
It feels more like how FTX story begun.

firstSpeaker··on Binance temporarily suspends USDC withdrawals
Time has come for Binance?
firstSpeaker··on Binance is trying to calm investors, but its finances remain a mystery
Surprising that this is not the front page. FTX related news are still front page but this is in the obscurity. Any of these two YC funded?
firstSpeaker··on Binance's Alleged Crypto Audit Failed, Not Even Its Auditor Would Vouch for It
This is going to be interesting if it is true.
