fires10··on Ask HN: Who's still keeping a DOS machine up because the business depends on it?
We typically integrate them by encapsulation. Building multiple layers of more modern systems for them to communicate through. A combination of Windows and Linux boxes. The other end of the connection is very old industrial equipment. This is not to run the equipment per se but to configure and program it.
fires10··on Ask HN: Who's still keeping a DOS machine up because the business depends on it?
MS-DOS or Windows 2003 running DOS vdm.
fires10··on Ask HN: Who's still keeping a DOS machine up because the business depends on it?
This is not always possible when the systems are validated and regulated.
fires10··on Ask HN: Who's still keeping a DOS machine up because the business depends on it?
I work at a multi billion dollar facility for a Fortune 100 company and we still depend on DOS. Keeping the mandatory DOS machines going is an exercise. Especially integrating them into modern systems.

Edit: There is no required hardware, however maintaining a stable serial connection through a VM and timing issues due to faster hardware has been fun.

fires10··on Does anyone run Postgres without PgBouncer?
I currently run without pgbouncer, but I have at most 200 connections. 50 of them are just replication. I didn't want the complexity.
fires10··on BMW Group to deploy humanoid robots in production in Germany for the first time
I have seen this way to often in other areas. That is the push here as well AI can sort through it. Too many people are held to account for not meeting what amounts to made up numbers.
fires10··on Local First Htmx
?? Since day1?
fires10··on MinIO stops distributing free Docker images
I do this frequently. To prevent vendor lock in and allow us to easily pivot if pricing gets out line. We pay to support the project and get technical support when needed. Considering how little we use technical support. It should be a good deal for the company.
fires10··on Deaths are projected to exceed births in 2031
Why? I don't understand why they would be bad? Some people can't naturally have children. It is a risk to a woman to be pregnant.
fires10··on How well does the money laundering control system work?
I generally like having these systems in place, because I find when dealing with certain vendors and businesses that following these helps me weed out many scammers when dealing with large amounts of money. Every transfer required a discussion with the teller asking questions about transfers and if the transaction is suspicious. Yes, criminals will find a way, but I find it provides me an easier screening to ensure some businesses are more likely legit.
fires10··on Leonardo Chiariglione – Co-founder of MPEG
I don't do video because I don't work with it, but I do image compression for fun and no profit. I do use some video techniques due to the type of images I am compressing. I don't release because of the minefield. I do it because it's fun. The simulation runs and other tasks often I kick to the cloud for the larger compute needs.
fires10··on Tesla reports 14% decline in deliveries, marking second year-over-year drop
For some people it isn't 'just politics'. They feel threatened by potential loss of freedom and life. If it was just a disagreement on tax rates or some government spending it would be different. His views are against someone else's existence.
fires10··on The Fed says this is a cube of $1M. They're off by half a million
I do not understand the claim the Fed is not a government agency?
fires10··on Libxml2's "no security embargoes" policy
SOAP is used far more than most people realize. I deal extensively in "cutting edge" industries that rely heavily on SOAP or SOAP based protocols. Supply chain systems and manufacturing.
fires10··on Cysteine depletion triggers adipose tissue thermogenesis and weight loss
I agree with your understanding of physics, but when you put human decision making in the loop you have to account for that in any solution. For some "eating less and moving more" can have other consequences. O was always taught good engineering requires an understanding of human behavior. I would prefer to eat less and move more.
fires10··on High-school shop students attract skilled-trades job offers
I have worked in the trades as an electrician and then became an estimator/Project Manager. Most are small businesses that are barely hanging on. It is often not a path to wealth. Many of the smaller businesses are being bought up by private equity now to drive up prices. The tradesmen are not getting wealthy and typically will not become wealthy. Licensing a business is different than the license a tradesman gets. Rules vary by state and are often require the approval of your would be competitors, regardless of demonstrated skill and time in the trade.
fires10··on Federal cuts disrupt repairs to iconic U.S. trails
Are the libertarians and right wingers going to not use the services they don't want to pay for? Or receive the benefits? Are they going to leave the educated society and start their own somewhere else?
fires10··on Something weird is happening with LLMs and chess
Recognize and hand over to a specialist engine? That might be useful for AI. Maybe I am missing something.
fires10··on Trump wins presidency for second time
I don't think it's the economy or anything else. All this seems like rationalizing to me not an understanding of what happened. Trump was able to motivate more people to vote than Harris was. I have yet to meet anyone who truly rationally made a choice that they had not already made to begin with other than after the fact rationalization. It is all about perception and what the other person believes. Reality and facts do not matter as much as we would like them to. There is no interest in anyone want to actually change their views. What argument or evidence would actually cause you to change your view? It would take extraordinary evidence for me to change my vote. I suspect that is the same for most voters, it's more of an issue of who can motivate better.
fires10··on How a Gas Compressor Station Works
Gas distribution systems are often shut off in my area during natural disasters. That's why I usually install a propane or diesel generator. They run off a tank.
fires10··on Michelle's List: A free, anonymous landlord review site
You still have to move. It's the same effect as evicting someone. It often takes months to find and get into a rental in my area. Then you get hit with first, last, and deposit which takes time to save up for. Moving costs are also on top of that.
fires10··on Michelle's List: A free, anonymous landlord review site
Yes, they can decide not to renew or extend a lease often with 30 days or less notice.
fires10··on Michelle's List: A free, anonymous landlord review site
I was looking at the prospect of renting out a second house that I have. The risks with a bad tenant are too high for me. I fully understand why a large number of people are not rented too. The risk is staggering unless you are well funded. I can't afford six months of mortgage payments to evict someone or the potential of the tenant to trash the place. My mortgage payment is quite low comparatively speaking, but there isn't enough gross profit to take the risk. Income subsidized units in this area leave too little in the incomes of most people to be anything other than teetering on the edge of financial ruin. The housing market is fundamentally broken. (I am speaking from Southeastern US perspective).
fires10··on Family Dollar to close almost 1,000 stores
Aldi's or another store is often very far away. I go to them because they are close and available. Most of us know they are more expensive. Time and travel need to be taken into account. Nearest grocery store is a minimum of 25 minutes one way. Family Dollar was 5 minutes away.
fires10··on The case for single-stair multifamily
I have minimum lot size of 5 acres. Can't see the wisdom in that one. I also have a minimum square footage size. $20,000 impact fee just to build a house and I receive no utilities or city/ county services.
fires10··on MIT MicroMasters
I have never understood this sentiment about the classes only being a small part. To me the classes were the only thing of value. Not once did I engage with any classmates outside of class on any academic subject. There was no scholarly learning or discussion. I did have those with professors during class or office hours. The availability tutors was beneficial. Most of the rest I felt was a distraction and a waste of time. There was no network to develop. I am not in contact with a single person I went to college with. It may work for some, but most of my colleagues say very similar things.
fires10··on Maestro: A Linux-compatible kernel in Rust
Can you expound in this some? I am not fully grasping your point. Are you saying "building safe by default" is a bad thing or assuming "safe forever" is a bad thing. Or are you saying something entirely different?
fires10··on Who profits most from America's baffling health-care system?
Yes, I actually go to the Mayo Clinic for primary care. It is actually cheaper than the rural doctors and hospital I live near. There is no shopping around for cost. The decision is do I trust the doctor or not. I drive to Mayo because the local doctors make to many mistakes and are not familiar enough with a variety of ailments.
fires10··on Who profits most from America's baffling health-care system?
Most medical decisions are not shopped. It has nothing to do with competition. Quality of care is first and foremost for me. I want to live costs be damned. Only rarely will cost come into it as a decision for me. Only on things I don't need. This is for both emergency and non-emergency care. I don't know of anyone who seriously and consistently looks at costs when making medical decisions. I usually have higher priorities.
