fire··on The Radiating Programmer
> This only works when you trust your team members. This means absolutely nobody who can fire me on the spot, not my supervisor, not my skip, not the CEO/CTO/VP should be on the call.

not sure how I'd've ever justified suggesting engineering standup without our engineering manager present

fire··on Free IRS-run tax filing pilot to be available in 13 states
my favorite part is how brokerages like morgan stanley don't report the cost basis when they report your sales to the irs, and for no reason I can find.

This means that if you don't report sales from your side so you can note the cost basis, the irs assumes a cost basis of 0 and calculates owed tax on the entire sale value - this applies to stuff like RSU grants as well, and trips up a great many people entering the tech sector ( especially young people who may not have much tax filing experience )

I legitimately don't know why brokerages don't all include the cost basis by default ( or why they aren't required to by law )

w2 only would mean independent contractors , like gig workers, won't be able to use it, right? since they get 1099's and not w2's?

are you referring to like when you do summarized trades? or something else?
fire··on Costco Capitalism
Was this recent? My Costco still had Hot Pockets as of last month
fire··on This is a black and white photo, but an artist has drawn color lines through it
this is honestly way cooler than the OP tweet
fire··on Open source hooliganism and the TypeScript meltdown
my guess is that's primarily due to the shift in incentives for social media, but also Svelte's decision being made by the group of maintainers/contributors together, and not impacting end users more or less at all as Svelte didn't stop generating types when they swapped from TS to JS+JSDoc
fire··on deVStudio – Runs VS Code on Android
neat, any thoughts on how to use a different base app?
fire··on Open source hooliganism and the TypeScript meltdown
Developer drama on twitter was always tiring but it's gotten so much worse since direct financial incentives for high engagement came into play
fire··on Mojo is available for local download
> Mojo is now available for local download – beginning with Linux systems, and adding Mac and Windows in coming releases.

sure would be nice if this was front and center on the actual website; the download page requires the user create an account in order to even find out that linux is the only supported platform at present.

fire··on deVStudio – Runs VS Code on Android
Does this use actual vscode or is it based on vscodium?

I'm curious how much tweaking you needed to do to get this to work - I'd love to see this with https://cursor.sh (vscodium based) as the editor

fire··on Show HN: Open-source obsidian.md sync server
Honestly I just want a sync solution I can host on my NAS that the mobile app can still access, which unfortunately isn't something the app natively supports, and more or less all of the current community solutions come with one caveat or another ( like the otherwise lovely git solution having issues on iOS clients, for example )
fire··on Chiptune.app
this is extremely cool when it works well!

my poor pixel 3 can't play back almost anything on the site without constant popping ( resembling artifacts, I think? ), which is sad

fire··on Threads, an Instagram app
Great, another social media platform that won't have any form of support team.

Twitter at least had one you could actually talk to before Elon took over, but Instagram has lacked support contact methods for years at this point.

Using a platform where you have no recourse or even method of reaching out if something goes awry is always a dangerous game to play :(

fire··on Gut–Brain axis
do you happen to know what the other two tests were / what the other condition being tested for was?
fire··on Dev Drive on Windows 11
holy crap
fire··on Hacking my “smart” toothbrush
ironically the special blue bristles in the philips heads that turn white when the brush head needs to be replaced is exactly what you want, I think?
fire··on Dev Drive on Windows 11
you mind speaking more about the kind of size differences you're seeing? also, do you have a link to that article by chance?
fire··on Dev Drive on Windows 11
oh neat, ReFS isn't dead

interested to see performance metrics when tech youtubers start messing around with it

fire··on Gravitational-wave detector LIGO is back
are gravitational waves like, universal? could we use them as a timing reference, I wonder?
fire··on D1: Improvements to performance and scalability
hmm, is this roughly equivalent to Neon[1], but sqlite based rather than postgres?

fire··on NodePad: LLM-aided graph based note-taking and brainstorming tool
This is very cool! I'd really like something like this for local models to integrate with Obsidian
fire··on 100K Context Windows
god I'd love to work there
fire··on Concrete: A fully homomorphic encryption compiler
I'm looking for similar - I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around this
fire··on Concrete: A fully homomorphic encryption compiler
not op but I think i'm too dumb on this topic to understand what you mean, could you explain further? ( to me it sounds like you're suggesting using encrypted weights while they're suggesting using encrypted inputs which to me solves two different use cases )
fire··on Efficient indexing with Quickwit Rust actor framework
any plans on migrating it to its own repo? presumably when it's more mature?
fire··on Too many people take too many pills
> With the toxin they put in Tylenol (to prevent abuse)

...acetaminophen itself is what kills your liver in an overdose, there is no "toxin they put in tylenol"

fire··on MiniGPT-4
vicuna was done with sharegpt transcripts, right? did they ever say if those transcripts were while users were using gpt3.5 or gpt4.0?
fire··on Additive Manufacturing of SiC and other ceramics
huh, now i wonder if we could make a 3d printer heat brake out of zirconium oxide

I hope these peeps expand into diamond as well, there's barely anyone doing work with fused or solid polycrystalline diamond anywhere near the consumer market

fire··on Ask Wirecutter: Can you recommend a not-smart TV for me?
I hope to god the edid on your displays doesn't include 4096x2160 for 3840x2160-native panels the way LG TVs do; it's such a freaking nightmare to deal with any sort of gpu scaling or DSR resolution type options on my LG CX due to that
